Historians verify an AI transcription of a coded document by checking each proposed symbol against the image before attempting to decode it. A plausible plaintext is not proof that the transcription is right: transcription identifies visible marks, while decipherment interprets the code. Keep uncertain readings and human corrections visible, and document how the reading was established.
What should be verified before trying to decode the document?
Start with the image, not the AI’s interpretation. A transcription is a claim about what marks appear on the page; decipherment is a claim about what those marks mean. If a symbol has been misread, any frequency analysis, substitution mapping, or proposed plaintext built on it may also be wrong.
Use the model output as a proposed reading. It may omit a mark, merge adjacent signs, invent a mark, or identify the same sign differently in separate places. A fluent or historically plausible plaintext cannot resolve those problems on its own.
How can you check a transcription systematically?
Work in sequence and preserve evidence at each stage. This is a practical workflow synthesized from historical-cipher research, not a claim that one formal verification standard governs all archives.

- Preserve the source and its context. Retain the best available scan, repository reference, folio or page identifier, and relevant provenance. Keep enhanced or cropped derivatives separate from the original and record how they were produced.
- Set transcription conventions. State whether you use literal characters, normalized symbol labels, or editorial notation. Decide how to mark illegible signs, uncertain readings, spacing, and line breaks. Do not silently replace an ambiguous mark with a guess.
- Compare the output against the scan in order. Inspect each region for omitted, merged, extra, or misidentified marks. Check whether repeated signs are read consistently, while allowing for genuine variation in handwriting or image quality.
- Record alternatives and disagreements. Preserve plausible alternate readings for unclear signs. When possible, ask a second researcher familiar with the script or cipher to inspect uncertain regions independently; do not erase disagreement before evidence resolves it.
- Corroborate independently. Compare readings with repeated symbols, known keys or symbol inventories, related documents, provenance, and relevant historical context. Treat these as checks, not permission to alter a mark merely because a preferred plaintext would result.
- Begin cryptanalysis only after review. Once you have a defensible transcription, proceed to frequency analysis, cipher-type assessment, or decipherment. If analysis later leads you to revise a symbol reading, log the change and the evidence for it.
- Report scope and uncertainty. Identify the tool and version if known, image quality, document type, review method, and unresolved signs. Limit conclusions to the document class and conditions actually examined.
What should an auditable record contain?
A useful record lets another researcher see what was read, where the reading came from, and how it changed. Preserve the original image and repository details alongside the transcription, conventions, model output, reviewer corrections, alternate readings, and any later revisions. Keep cryptanalytic notes distinct from the transcription so that an interpretation is not mistaken for what the image visibly contains.
This separation is reflected in specialist resources. The DECRYPT project describes DECODE records as digitized ciphertext and key images with metadata including provenance, location, transcription, and possible cryptanalysis or commentary; it also describes machine-learning-assisted transcription and decipherment resources. What can cipher-specific tools contribute?
Tools can help organize image processing and cryptanalytic work, but their outputs still need expert review. The DECRYPT project’s TRANSCRIPT paper describes an interactive tool for scanned historical cipher manuscripts and says: “However, at each step the user can manually intervene, clean up or enrich the results of algorithmic image processing.” Szigeti and Héder, “The TRANSCRIPT Tool for Historical Ciphers by the DECRYPT Project” The paper appeared in 2022 and describes a work-in-progress version at that time; its publication does not establish the tool’s present availability or capabilities.
More recent work illustrates active development rather than automatic validation. An IEEE Access article published 14 January 2026 presents the Historical Handwritten Cipher Symbol dataset and a pipeline spanning detection, classification, and transcription of encrypted text from scanned images. The 2026 DescryptTool article describes transcription cleanup, frequency and coincidence analysis, iterative solver control, substitution mapping, and provenance logging. It also notes that stochastic solvers need recorded random seeds for reproducibility, LLM recommendations can be wrong, and nomenclature elements in cipher systems require expert validation. “The DescryptTool: agentic LLM-based workbench for decipherment of historical ciphers” These capabilities can support a documented workflow; they do not make an unreviewed transcription reliable by themselves.
Do handwriting transcription accuracy figures apply to coded manuscripts?
No. A 2025 study by Humphries and coauthors examined LLM transcription of a diverse set of 18th- and 19th-century English handwriting. For the tested corpus, it reported character error rates of 5.7–7% and word error rates of 8.9–15.9% for LLM transcriptions; after LLM correction, it reported results as low as 1.8% character error rate and 3.5% word error rate. These figures describe that study’s handwritten-English material, not encrypted manuscripts or cipher-symbol inventories, and its test document set was not made public. For any accuracy claim, check whether the evaluation matches the document’s script, period, language, cipher type, symbol set, and image quality. A result on ordinary handwriting cannot establish performance on coded signs. The cited materials do not establish a general verification-accuracy statistic for historians checking AI-generated transcriptions of coded documents.

- the transcription conventions and how uncertain or illegible marks are represented;
- the AI tool and version, if known, and any image processing applied;
- what was reviewed, by whom, and how independent readings or disagreements were handled;
- which symbols remain uncertain, and whether later cryptanalysis prompted any revisions;
- the scope of the evidence, without extending results to untested document types.
