Snap Spectacles (2024) run interactive augmented-reality Lenses: digital content can appear in your surroundings and respond to input. Depending on the Lens and the APIs it supports, experiences can recognize gestures, use the camera view, connect to online services, accept phone-linked controls, or place virtual objects on surfaces. They require setup through the Spectacles App and a Snapchat account.
What can Snap Spectacles do?
Spectacles are an AR platform for running Lenses, rather than a fixed set of features that works identically in every experience. Snap’s Spectacles Features Overview describes capabilities available to Lens developers. Whether you can use a particular capability depends on the Lens and its supported APIs.
Recognize gestures
A Lens can use Snap’s Gesture Module to detect gestures through a machine-learning approach. This lets a developer make an experience respond to recognized hand movements; it does not mean every Lens supports gesture control.
Build around what the camera sees
The Camera Module provides APIs for retrieving a camera frame representing the wearer’s current view. Developers can use this to make camera-aware experiences. The API’s existence does not mean every Lens continuously accesses or stores camera imagery.

Developers can create custom mobile controllers that communicate with Spectacles linked to the Spectacles App. A phone-linked controller is an option for a Lens, not a universal control scheme built into every experience.
Connect to online services
Snap documents internet-request APIs for connecting to external APIs and downloading media. What an online Lens does with those capabilities depends on its design and the services it uses.

Place virtual objects on surfaces
The World Query Module supports instant surface-based placement in Lens development. A Lens can use it to position digital objects on real-world surfaces, where supported.
Run connected experiences
Snap’s historic release notes describe Connected Lenses and developer toolkits. Snap Cloud, powered by Supabase, is described separately as an alpha developer service available by application; it should not be assumed to be available to all Spectacles owners or included in every Lens. Do Snap Spectacles need a phone?
For first-time setup, Snap’s instructions require the Spectacles App and a Snapchat account on a phone. Bluetooth is used in the pairing flow, and you must provide a Wi-Fi network and password. Follow the app’s prompts to connect the glasses. Snap’s instructions distinguish Spectacles (2024) from Spectacles 1, 2, and 3, which use a different pairing path. - Install the Spectacles App and connect your Snapchat account.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone and power on the Spectacles.
- Follow the in-app pairing flow and enter the Wi-Fi network and password when requested.
- If your phone supports the setup option, use the IPD lens to measure interpupillary distance. You can also adjust IPD manually in the app settings.
The setup requirements establish that a phone is needed to pair the 2024 glasses; they do not establish that every Lens requires a phone to operate after setup.

What data and device settings does setup require?
Snap’s setup instructions say camera and microphone data collection is necessary to operate Spectacles, and you cannot continue setup without accepting the relevant terms. Location data is a separate setting that can be enabled or disabled.
You can pair multiple Spectacles devices to one phone, but only one pair is active at a time. Snap says only the active pair imports captures and collects location data while capturing.

What are the limits of Spectacles features?
Spectacles use the Lens Studio API set also used by Snapchat and Camera Kit, but that does not make every Lens Studio capability available on the glasses. Snap’s Compatibility List identifies wearable-only APIs and APIs that are not supported on Spectacles (2024), and notes that features are still being ported and tested. A capability advertised for Snapchat or Camera Kit should not be assumed to work on Spectacles unless it is supported there.
Capture and other behaviors can also depend on a Lens and software version. Snap’s Historic Release Notes include version-specific examples: the cited notes for Snap OS v5.064.0423 and Spectacles App v0.64.16.0 (iOS and Android) said video calling was unavailable at that time and recorded capture, import, and Lens-specific issues. They also described cases where some Lenses or components did not capture, captures could fail or be shortened in specified circumstances, and the microphone could disconnect when moving between a Lens and Lens Explorer. These are reports for the listed software, not a statement that the issues affect every current installation. Check Snap’s current release notes and update information before relying on an individual feature or capture behavior.
