Choose Kingdom Hearts if you want a continuing action-RPG saga built around Sora, recurring friends, and Disney and Pixar worlds. Choose Final Fantasy if you want to pick a setting and play style, then try a largely self-contained RPG without committing to one overarching story. You do not need to finish Final Fantasy before playing Kingdom Hearts: the latter is a Disney and Square Enix collaboration with its own story, not a sequel to Final Fantasy.

At a glance: which series fits you?

How the series differ

Kingdom Hearts is a connected crossover saga

Kingdom Hearts combines Disney worlds and characters with original Square Enix characters and storylines. Its central plot follows Sora and recurring friends, so events and relationships carry across games. Square Enix describes HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX as an “essential collection of the first six stories” in the collaboration between Disney and Square Enix; that is the publisher’s product description.

For a practical route, begin with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, then continue through HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind in the collection path presented by Square Enix. The collections include different formats: alongside playable titles, they contain cutscene compilations and a movie. They are not all full games with the same format.

Final Fantasy offers many independent entry points

Most numbered mainline Final Fantasy games have their own casts and worlds. PlayStation’s guide to the series says newcomers can start where they choose rather than play every entry, while noting direct-sequel exceptions. For example, play Final Fantasy X before X-2, and Final Fantasy VII Remake before Rebirth.

KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] Amazon Exclusive Edition - PlayStation 5
  • KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a double-sided poster.
  • A value packed bundle featuring three collections: KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC).
  • This product is also included in other bundle sets. Please ensure you do not purchase the same content more than once.
  • Platform-exclusive Keyblade "Midnight Blue" included with purchase!
  • To play the physical version of KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], an internet connection and additional data download are required.

The franchise is not one fixed combat system. PlayStation’s guide describes most numbered games as traditional JRPGs, newer single-player entries as having more real-time movement, and Final Fantasy XIV as an MMORPG. The guide counts 16 numbered mainline games and estimates well over 100 games when remakes, spinoffs, and sub-sequels are included; those are PlayStation’s 2025 figures, with the latter expressly approximate.

Choose by the kind of play you want

You want a continuing plot

Start Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and follow the collection path through HD 2.8 to Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. Because story threads span installments, skipping story-bearing entries can make later developments harder to follow. The route is a practical recommendation, not a claim that every item in the collection is a full playable game.

You want to try one game without adopting a whole saga

Choose a standalone numbered Final Fantasy that suits your preferred setting or combat approach. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD is a paired option, but it is two linked games: play X first, then its sequel X-2.

You prefer action combat

PlayStation describes Final Fantasy VII Remake as blending command-based and action-oriented combat, making it one possible first pick if you like real-time action. That shared broad trait does not mean it plays identically to Kingdom Hearts.

You want online social play

Final Fantasy XIV is the MMORPG option among the PlayStation guide’s suggested entry points. It is designed as an online multiplayer role-playing game, not as a substitute for a single-player numbered entry.

You are choosing for familiar worlds

Pick Kingdom Hearts if Disney and Pixar settings are a major draw. Final Fantasy changes worlds and casts from game to game, but it is not a Disney crossover series.

Where to begin

For Kingdom Hearts

  1. Start with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, the collection that begins with the first adventure.
  2. Continue with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
  3. Move on to Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind.

Square Enix’s current Collection [I~III] page groups these three collections. Check the listing for your edition so you know which included items are playable games, movies, or cutscene compilations.

For Final Fantasy

  • Want a hybrid command-and-action approach? PlayStation’s guide suggests Final Fantasy VII Remake as an accessible starting point; follow it with Rebirth if you continue that story.
  • Want a remastered two-game pair? Try Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, playing X first.
  • Want action-oriented combat? The guide points to Final Fantasy XVI.
  • Want an open-world adventure? The guide points to Final Fantasy XV.
  • Want a sociable MMORPG? The guide points to Final Fantasy XIV.
