Choose a microSD card only after checking your handheld’s manual or official support page for its maximum supported capacity, required filesystem, and any minimum speed class. Then buy a card that meets those requirements. A high speed rating or large capacity cannot make an unsupported card compatible.
Check compatibility before choosing capacity
Compatibility is specific to the handheld model and sometimes its operating system or firmware. Look up the exact model’s manual or official support instructions before buying or formatting a card. The SD Association likewise advises following the device manual to select an appropriate capacity and speed class: SD Association FAQ.
- Maximum capacity: Confirm the largest card the device supports. Do not assume that a handheld accepts every card size allowed by the SD standard.
- Filesystem: Check whether the device requires a particular format, or whether its setup guide formats the card for you.
- Speed class: If the manual names a minimum, choose a card with that class or higher.
For a concrete but limited example, a Retroid community wiki says the Pocket 2 is theoretically able to use up to 2 TB, while recommending 512 GB or less for cost and performance reasons. This is secondary, model-specific guidance—not a universal rule or a current manufacturer guarantee. See the Retroid Handhelds wiki.
Match the card’s capacity and filesystem
SD card capacity standards are associated with filesystem families. The SD Association defines SDHC as more than 2 GB through 32 GB, associated with FAT32, and SDXC as more than 32 GB through 2 TB, associated with exFAT. Those standard associations do not override a handheld’s own capacity limit or formatting requirements. Check the SD Association capacity overview and the instructions for your device.

Choose a capacity that fits both the device’s stated limit and the amount of storage you actually want. A large library may call for more space, but it is not a reason to exceed the model’s supported maximum. No single capacity recommendation applies across all retro handhelds.
Choose a speed class the handheld can use
Speed-class symbols describe minimum sequential-performance guarantees under defined conditions; they are not a promise of a particular game-loading time. Meet or exceed the class specified by the handheld’s manufacturer. The SD Association explains the class markings and matching a host with a card of the same or a higher class on its speed-class guidance page.

A higher class label does not ensure that the handheld itself will run faster: the host must be able to use the card’s performance. If the device does not specify a speed class, do not infer that the most demanding rating is necessary; prioritize verified compatibility.
Format the card using the device’s instructions
Do not apply one formatting rule to every handheld. SDHC and SDXC cards have different standard filesystem associations, and older or specialized handheld software may add requirements. Back up any files you need before reformatting, then follow the target model’s manual and operating-system setup guide.

- Identify the exact handheld and firmware. Find its manual or official support page.
- Confirm the capacity limit. Choose a card within the model’s supported range and sized for your library.
- Check the required filesystem. Follow the device’s instructions rather than assuming the card’s standard format will work unchanged.
- Meet any stated speed class. A class at or above the manufacturer’s minimum is the relevant comparison.
- Buy through a seller you trust. Verify the card’s authenticity and seller reputation; no specific brand or retail model is established here as the best choice.
- Compare price per usable capacity. Consider cost only among cards that meet the compatibility requirements.
For most buyers, the practical choice is a UHS-I microSD card matched to the particular handheld’s capacity, filesystem, and speed requirements. A USB microSD card reader can be a useful optional setup accessory if your computer has no suitable card slot.
