First check its official specifications for HDMI or USB-C DisplayPort output; a USB-C charging port alone does not mean it can send video. Once you confirm support, use the matching cable or a compatible HDMI dock, connect the TV, and select the correct HDMI input.
Check whether your handheld supports TV output
Find the exact model name on the handheld, its box, or in its system settings. Then check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for terms such as “HDMI,” “DisplayPort,” or “USB-C video output.” Anbernic’s support FAQ says to consult the “other functions” column on the individual product detail page for projection support: Anbernic support FAQ.
Do not assume a USB-C port supports video just because it charges the device. For example, Anbernic specifies USB Type-C 1080p DisplayPort output for the RG556, but says that model does not support HDMI projection while charging. That is a limitation of the RG556, not a universal rule for handhelds: Anbernic RG556 support.
Choose the right cable or dock
USB-C DisplayPort video output
If the handheld supports video over USB-C DisplayPort, connect it to an HDMI-capable USB-C dock or hub, then connect the dock to the TV with an HDMI cable. Confirm that the dock is compatible with your exact model before buying. If you want to charge while connected, check that the handheld and dock support that arrangement; the presence of power delivery on a dock does not guarantee that every handheld can output video and charge simultaneously.

Retroid’s official 7-in-1 USB-C dock lists HDMI output up to 4K at 60 Hz, power delivery, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB ports. Those are dock specifications, not a guarantee that a connected handheld can output at that resolution. Retroid’s compatibility list identifies the RP Nova, RP6, RP5, and RP4 Pro as fully compatible; the RP Mini as incompatible; the RP4 as partially compatible with no HDMI support; the RP3+ as partially compatible; the RP3 as charge-only; and the RP2, RP2S, and RP2+ as not applicable. A dedicated HDMI port
If your handheld has a dedicated HDMI socket, use a cable with the matching connector and connect it to the TV. Connector types vary. A retailer’s FAQ, for example, identifies a Type-D Micro HDMI cable for a specific Retroid Pocket 2 dock arrangement; that is an example for that setup, not a general cable recommendation: Retroid FAQ.

Connect the handheld to the TV
- Confirm the handheld’s exact model and verify that it supports video output in its official specifications or support information.
- Connect the correct accessory: use an HDMI-capable USB-C dock or hub for a USB-C DisplayPort model, or a matching cable for a dedicated HDMI port. Check compatibility with the handheld.
- Run an HDMI cable from the dock to the TV, if using a dock. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input where the cable is connected.
- If the handheld has video-output settings, follow its own manual or support instructions. Menu names and procedures vary, so there is no universal setting path.
- If you want to play from the couch, pair an external controller and configure it in the game or emulator. A controller is optional for displaying the handheld’s video.

If the TV shows a blank screen
- Recheck that the exact handheld model supports video output. Charging over USB-C does not establish video support.
- Confirm that the dock or adapter is listed as compatible with the handheld and supports the needed video connection.
- Check that the connector is the right type and is seated properly.
- Verify that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Check the handheld’s manual for any model-specific output mode or setting.
These checks address the documented model dependence and connection components; there is no single reset sequence established for all retro handhelds.

What to compare when choosing accessories
Compare accessories by confirmed compatibility with your exact handheld first. Then check the connector and video standard, whether simultaneous charging is supported for your setup, and whether you need extra ports or Ethernet. A dock’s headline resolution describes the dock’s capability; it does not establish the maximum output of the handheld.
