Graphene-based photothermal elastomers and shape-memory polymers are not opposing material categories. The first describes a way to turn light into heat and use that heat to move a polymer; the second describes a programmed recovery behavior. A graphene composite can be both photothermal and shape-memory, so the key comparison is the material’s architecture, trigger and motion—not “graphene versus polymer.”

What is the key difference?

“Photothermal” refers to an energy-conversion pathway: an absorber such as graphene takes in light and converts it to heat. The polymer matrix responds to that heat, for example by expanding or by crossing a temperature-dependent transition. The resulting movement depends on the matrix and its design, not on graphene alone. A review of graphene light-responsive actuators discusses this photothermal mechanism and its use in light-triggered materials: Frontiers in Chemistry.

“Shape memory” describes what a material does. A shape-memory polymer (SMP) is programmed into a temporary shape and, when an appropriate switching mechanism is activated, recovers toward a permanent shape. Heat is one possible trigger; some designs use light-mediated heating, electricity, magnetic stimulation or solvents. The American Chemical Society’s 2025 review describes stimulus mechanisms and applications for shape-memory elastomers: Chemical Reviews.

These labels answer different questions: photothermal describes how energy enters the system; shape memory describes a recovery behavior. An elastomer is a rubber-like polymer, but that does not automatically make it an SMP. An elastomer may have shape-memory behavior if its structure and switching mechanism are designed for it.

How the material designs work

Graphene-based photothermal elastomer

In a photothermal composite, graphene or a graphene-derived filler absorbs light and generates heat. That heat deforms the elastomer or activates a responsive feature in the matrix. Light can deliver heat remotely and to a selected region, but the motion still depends on the material’s thermal and mechanical design, along with the light conditions.

A graphene/elastomer composite used for photothermal nanopositioning illustrates how such designs can produce controlled motion. It is one research example, not evidence that all graphene elastomers share the same travel, speed, force or operating scale: Scientific Reports.

Shape-memory polymer

An SMP generally has a stable network that defines its permanent shape and a switching mechanism that allows a temporary shape to be fixed and later released. To understand a particular SMP, identify its polymer matrix, switching transition, programming procedure and activation stimulus. “SMP” alone does not specify whether the material is rubbery, rigid, light-activated or designed for another trigger.

Where the categories overlap

Graphene can be added to an SMP as a photothermal absorber. In that case, light heats the polymer through its switching transition, and the SMP recovers toward its programmed permanent shape. The composite is both graphene-based and photothermal, while also exhibiting shape-memory behavior. This is why a simple two-column opposition can be misleading; reviews of graphene shape-memory nanocomposites discuss these combined mechanisms: graphene shape-memory nanocomposites review.

Photothermal actuation is also distinct from direct photochemical actuation. In a photochemical design, light-sensitive groups or bonds can drive a response without relying solely on heat generated by an absorber.

How to compare specific materials

There is no supported universal performance winner. The reviewed materials use different matrices, stimuli, geometries and test conditions, and do not provide one standardized, head-to-head dataset across these measures. Compare a particular formulation using the details below rather than treating either class as inherently faster, stronger or more durable.

Comparison point What to establish
Matrix and architecture Polymer chemistry, elastomeric behavior, network structure, graphene form and filler loading.
Actuation mechanism Whether motion comes from thermal expansion or deformation, shape-memory recovery, or both.
Trigger Light wavelength and intensity, direct heat, electrical or magnetic input, or another stimulus.
Temperature window The switching or transition temperature and whether heat can reach it under the intended conditions.
Motion and output Direction, strain, displacement, force and response time, with geometry and test conditions.
Programming and recovery How a temporary shape is set; recovery and fixity measures; and whether operation is one-way or reversible.
Materials engineering Graphene dispersion, matrix–filler interaction, interface quality and reproducibility.
Practical constraints Cycling and aging, manufacturing and scale-up, processing, safety and operating environment.

These factors matter because graphene form and dispersion, the polymer–filler interface and stimulus choice can all affect the composite. “Graphene” is not a single interchangeable filler specification: pristine graphene and its derivatives can differ in dispersion and interaction with a matrix. A review of graphene light-responsive actuators identifies weak chemical activity of pristine graphene and mass-production challenges as practical concerns; it does not establish one universal formulation or manufacturing outcome.

The available comparisons do not establish class-wide values for durability, fatigue life, scale-up or cost, nor do they justify claims that one class is categorically easier to manufacture. Those questions require data for the specific formulation and intended use.
