A video is useful evidence, not a guarantee: repeat the relevant tests in person when possible.
1. Establish exactly what the listing includes
Start with the precise item, not just its name. Console revisions, regions, included accessories, and game variants can affect whether a purchase suits your setup.
- For a console, identify its model or revision and region. List the included controller or controllers, power supply, cables, memory card, and any games.
- For a game, confirm the exact title and version, region, language, and whether the box, manual, cartridge, or disc is included.
- Check that the pictures show the actual item from several angles. Ask for photos of labels, serial markings, ports, connectors, cartridge slots, disc surfaces, and accessories if these are missing. The FTC recommends checking photos of the actual item and being cautious when they are absent.
- Read the listing carefully. Terms such as “untested,” “as is,” or “for parts” are not equivalent to a working-condition claim. Ask what was tested and when, and keep the answer in writing.
A low price can justify extra scrutiny, but it does not by itself prove that a listing is fraudulent or an item counterfeit. The cited guidance does not provide a universal price guide.
2. Ask for a demonstration of the actual unit
Request a recent video showing the specific console being tested—not stock footage or a clip of a different unit. Sony Interactive Entertainment advises PlayStation buyers to ask for a video testing ports, buttons, and disc drives where applicable (PlayStation’s used-product buying guide). A brief startup screen alone does not show that a game loads or that controls and connections work.

- Does it power on and stay on? Can the seller show a game running?
- Which buttons, controller inputs, ports, video outputs, and audio outputs were tested?
- For a disc system, does the drive read a game and eject it reliably? For a cartridge system, does it recognize and run a compatible game?
- Does the picture remain stable as the console warms up? Ask about overheating, unusual noise, intermittent connections, corrosion, and repairs or modifications.
- Are the included power supply and cables suitable for the console and its region?
For an online-enabled system, ask whether the previous owner deactivated it and whether it can connect to the relevant services. PlayStation specifically recommends checking service connection and confirming deactivation for connected devices; this may not apply to older consoles or services that have changed or ended.
3. Inspect condition and completeness
Video cannot establish every aspect of condition. If practical, inspect the item yourself and repeat the demonstrated checks. PlayStation recommends checking image quality, overheating, damage, broken seals, and removed serial numbers when examining a used system in person (PlayStation’s buying guide).

- Look over the shell, labels, serial markings, ports, connectors, buttons, and control sticks for damage, corrosion, heavy wear, or signs of tampering.
- Check that every advertised accessory is present and that its connector fits without forcing it.
- Test with a compatible game and controller when possible. Use the test appropriate to the hardware: disc reading and ejecting for disc systems; game recognition and play for cartridge systems.
- For a game, inspect the cartridge or disc as well as the label, box, and manual. Confirm that the pictured pieces are the ones included.
There is no single test that covers every console generation. Do not open a console or cartridge unless you understand the risks and have a specific reason to inspect internal parts.
4. Check authenticity, region, and compatibility
Assess games separately from the console. Nintendo advises buyers of used games to examine print, packaging, and seals, and to confirm region and language. Suspicious presentation deserves closer scrutiny, but no one visual cue proves that an item is genuine or fake (Nintendo’s guidance on counterfeit products).

Be clear about what the seller is representing: an original game, a reproduction, a replacement shell, or another variant. Nintendo warns that some offers involving copied products or purported bundles of multiple older games may be counterfeit and could damage a system (Nintendo’s counterfeit-product guidance). An unusual appearance alone is not enough to make that determination.
Check accessories by brand and product, rather than treating one manufacturer’s marks as a universal standard. Nintendo says its licensed accessories carry an official seal and that unlicensed accessories may not work or may have compatibility problems (Nintendo’s information about licensed products). Microsoft publishes separate visual indicators for Xbox products, including logos, holograms, labels, connector markings, and packaging details (Microsoft’s Xbox accessory guidance); those indicators do not authenticate accessories from other brands.

5. Review the seller and transaction terms
Check the seller’s history and marketplace reputation, and ask questions in writing so you have a record of what was promised. Nintendo also recommends checking seller reputation on online auction sites and buying legal, licensed products (Nintendo’s licensed-product information).
- Read the shipping and return policies before paying. Ask how long you have to report a problem and who pays return shipping if the item materially differs from the listing.
- Keep copies of the listing, photos, messages, and transaction terms.
- Use a payment method with appropriate buyer protection, such as a credit card or a secure payment system with protection for eligible purchases. The protections depend on the provider, transaction, platform, and location.
The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends reviewing descriptions and seller terms, checking shipping and return policies, asking questions in writing, keeping records, and using safer payment methods (FTC online shopping guidance). No marketplace or payment option is universally safe in every location or transaction.

6. Compare the risks, not just the asking price
When weighing two listings, compare like with like. A lower asking price may not be a better deal if important functions are untested, accessories are missing, or returns are unavailable. Consider:
- Exact model or game variant, revision, region, and included items.
- Which functions the seller demonstrated and how recently.
- Condition, visible damage, overheating or unusual noise, and disclosed repairs or modifications.
- Evidence supporting authenticity and compatibility of games and accessories.
- Whether photos show the actual item and whether the seller answers specific questions.
- Return terms, shipping cost, payment protection, and total delivered cost.
There is no universal test, authentication method, or current market-price benchmark established for every retro console and game. Let the asking price reflect the evidence and protections you actually have, and avoid paying as though an untested or poorly documented item were confirmed working.
