They suit different tasks, and none promises unlimited access to every tool. For general writing and Q&A, start with ChatGPT or Claude; for Google’s mix of assistant features, try Gemini; for web answers with visible sources, compare Perplexity; and for web-based help in Microsoft’s ecosystem, use Copilot Free.
Which free AI chatbot should you try?
There is no evidence-based quality winner here: provider feature descriptions do not establish that one service gives better answers than another. Choose by the task you need to complete and the limits you are willing to work around.
| Free option | Good starting point for | What to know about free access |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | Everyday writing, Q&A, and trying multiple tools in one assistant | Text chats are described as unlimited subject to abuse safeguards, but tools such as uploads, image creation, voice, and data analysis have separate limits. The default model and limits can change. OpenAI may show ads in some countries. |
| Gemini Free | Trying Google’s assistant features, including image tools, voice, and research functions | Google lists the plan at $0 per month with a Google Account. Model and feature access varies; limits can shift with demand, prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. |
| Claude Free | Brainstorming, learning, writing, coding, and processing information | Anthropic describes Free as limited use with no payment required, without publishing a stable numeric message allowance on the reviewed plan page. |
| Microsoft Copilot Free | General questions and answers and web-based tasks | Microsoft offers a no-cost consumer assistant. It is distinct from Copilot features included with Microsoft 365 subscriptions. |
| Perplexity Standard Free | Web-oriented questions where you want to inspect source trails | Perplexity’s plan comparison, last updated September 2, 2026, lists practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches per day, and 1 Research query per month. It also lists limited basic file uploads and excludes advanced AI models and image generation. |
These are consumer-facing options, not a privacy ranking or a comparative test. Availability and features can vary by country, account type, device, and demand. Review each provider’s current privacy and data controls before sharing sensitive information.
Choose by what you need to do
Everyday writing and questions
Start with ChatGPT Free or Claude Free for drafting, brainstorming, explanations, and general Q&A. ChatGPT also lists web search and several separate tools; Claude’s plan page emphasizes working with information, text, code, and learning. Neither provider’s feature descriptions prove an answer-quality advantage. If one reaches a limit, try the other for that task rather than assuming the paid plan is necessary.

Web research and source trails
Perplexity is the most explicitly search-oriented choice in this group. Its free plan includes basic searches and a small published allowance for higher-end research features. Search results and citations can help you check where claims came from, but they do not guarantee that an answer is correct. Follow important claims back to the cited material and verify them there.
Images, voice, and Google-connected features
Google lists image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, and Gems for Gemini, alongside varying access to its models. Gemini Free is listed at $0 per month with a Google Account. Availability and usage depend on factors such as account type, region, demand, and the particular feature. Google’s help page says, “Limits may change without notice, including due to capacity constraints.”

Web-based help from Microsoft
Microsoft describes Copilot Free as suitable for general Q&A and web-based tasks. Do not confuse it with Copilot in Microsoft 365: the latter has separate app-connected capabilities and plan-dependent usage rules. If your main need is assistance inside Microsoft 365 apps, check the exact features of the subscription you have rather than assuming they come with the free consumer assistant.
Files, data, and tool-heavy tasks
ChatGPT Free lists file and image uploads and data analysis, but these tools have limits separate from ordinary text chats. Gemini also offers features that may use more computing resources, and Google says access can vary with capacity and use. Perplexity’s free plan includes only limited basic file uploads. If your task depends on frequent uploads or sustained analysis, test the free option against that specific workflow before relying on it.

What “free” does—and does not—include
A free plan can be useful for occasional questions without guaranteeing continuous access to every model or feature. Providers apply different kinds of limits: some tools have separate caps, some access varies with demand, and some plans publish specific daily or monthly allowances.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI describes text chats as unlimited subject to abuse safeguards, while tool usage has separate limits. If a tool cap is reached, you may have to wait for it to reset. OpenAI’s FAQ notes that “The default model and available limits can change over time.”
- Gemini: Limits can depend on prompt complexity, which features you use, conversation length, and capacity. Google’s personal-account guidance does not automatically describe access for work or school accounts.
- Claude: The free plan is limited, but the reviewed public plan description does not establish a stable number of messages.
- Copilot: Free consumer access is separate from Microsoft 365 subscription features and their plan-specific rules.
- Perplexity: The dated daily and monthly caps apply to its Free plan comparison; check the current page because allowances can change.
When a limit interrupts an occasional task, waiting for a reset or switching services may be enough. If you repeatedly hit the same limit during work you depend on, compare the current paid plans for that specific feature before deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile. That is a practical rule of thumb, not a measured threshold.

How to pick without paying for the wrong thing
- Name the task. Decide whether you mostly need writing, web research, coding or study help, image features, or file analysis.
- Try the matching free plan. Use the provider’s official plan page to confirm current availability, account requirements, and included tools in your country.
- Test your real workflow. If you need uploads, voice, or research, try those features directly; ordinary chat access does not tell you how much capacity they have.
- Notice the limit you actually hit. A changing model allowance, a tool-specific cap, and a published monthly research quota are different restrictions.
- Compare alternatives only when the limitation matters. Using multiple free services can provide a fallback, but means managing separate accounts and interfaces. Consider paying only if a recurring constraint blocks a task that matters to you.
