On Windows PC, the most useful documented checks are confirming the game is up to date, comparing your system with the published requirements, testing the in-game frame-rate options for performance trouble, and—only for input-device switching—trying 2K’s older Steam Overlay workaround. These steps are not universal fixes for every crash, stutter, blurry image, or mission bug.
Start by identifying the platform and symptom
The steps below focus on the Windows PC version. Do not assume that a PC menu option or Steam workaround applies to PlayStation, Xbox, or Mac. First note where you own the game—Steam or another storefront—and describe exactly what happens.
- Won’t launch: record whether anything appears, whether an error is shown, and when the attempt stops.
- Crashes: note whether the crash happens at startup or at the same point in a mission.
- Stuttering or poor performance: note whether it occurs constantly or during particular activities, such as driving.
- Blurry rendering: record when the image looks blurry and any display settings you changed.
- Controller or keyboard/mouse switching: check whether the problem occurs when changing input devices.
- Mission progression problem: record the mission and the exact action that fails.
Matching the test to the symptom matters: an FPS setting is a performance diagnostic, while the Steam Overlay workaround addresses a specific input-switching problem.
Check the game version and your PC’s requirements
Update the game through the storefront where you own it, then compare the computer with Steam’s published requirements for the Windows edition. Steam lists 50 GB of available storage for both minimum and recommended specifications. Steam’s Mafia III: Definitive Edition listing identifies 2K as publisher and Hangar 13 as developer.

Steam’s Windows 7 game requirement is not the same as Steam client support: Steam says its client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. Meeting the game’s listed minimum is a baseline check, not a guarantee that a particular issue will disappear.
Test frame-rate options for PC performance problems
2K’s PC patch announcement documents 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options in the game’s video/display menu, stating: “This patch includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options on PC.” The announcement recommends choosing an option suited to the machine, but does not prescribe a cap for a specific system or symptom. - Open the game’s video or display menu on PC.
- Select a frame-rate option—30, 60, or unlimited—and play the same section where the problem is noticeable.
- Change only that option for the next comparison and note whether performance changes.
This is a controlled diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure for stuttering or crashes. The cited menu guidance is for PC; it should not be treated as a console or Mac setting.
Try the Steam Overlay workaround only for input switching
If a Windows PC player has trouble switching between a gamepad and keyboard/mouse, an older 2K support article recommends turning off the Steam Overlay before launching. Treat this as a reversible, symptom-specific workaround—not a general fix for controller problems or other bugs. 2K’s Steam Overlay instructions document the recommendation, but the article is historical and does not confirm that it resolves every current setup.

- Turn off the Steam Overlay, then launch the game and check whether device switching works.
- If the issue is unchanged, restore the Overlay; if it improves, note the result and your setup.
When basic checks do not resolve the issue
2K announced a patch for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on June 18, 2020, and directed players with issues to 2K Support. The announcement available at that link does not provide a complete change list, so it does not establish that the patch fixes any particular crash, stutter, visual issue, or progression bug. If the problem persists, use 2K Support and include the platform, storefront, PC specifications if applicable, steps that reproduce the issue, and any error text. Steam’s technical-issues page also points to official support and community-created guides; a community guide is a lead, not proof of an official or universally effective fix.
