Windows 11’s “October update” is best understood as two related things, not one release: Microsoft calls its annual feature release the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2, while a separate September Release Preview describes additional changes for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Many 26H2 features have already been arriving gradually through monthly updates, so the visible changes depend on your device and rollout status.
What Microsoft means by the Windows 11 October update
Microsoft’s September 29, 2026 announcement names the annual release the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2. It is an enablement package for eligible PCs already running Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2: many of its components are present through earlier monthly servicing updates, and the package activates them. Microsoft describes the installation as similar to a monthly update, with a small download and quick restart, but does not promise a specific download size or installation time.
A separate September 10 Release Preview announcement covers builds 26100.9539 and 26200.9539 for versions 24H2 and 25H2. Its feature notes include several practical refinements, but those are preview-build notes, not a definitive list of new 26H2 features. Microsoft says changes can roll out gradually, so not every eligible PC will receive them at the same time.
How to check for version 26H2
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if you want to receive eligible updates earlier.
- Select Check for updates. If version 26H2 is offered, follow the on-screen instructions to download and restart.
Availability is controlled and depends on eligibility. Microsoft may place a safeguard hold on a device with a known compatibility issue, so not seeing 26H2 does not necessarily mean Windows Update is broken. Avoid trying to bypass a hold; wait for Microsoft to resolve the issue and offer the update.

What the September Release Preview changes could improve
The following items are described in Microsoft’s September 10 preview notes for versions 24H2 and 25H2. They are software changes, not a promise that every device already has them or will receive them together.
File Explorer previews and remembered layout
For downloaded HTML files, File Explorer adds a Preview anyway option after displaying a warning. Non-HTML files such as PDFs preview automatically. File Explorer Home also remembers whether sections were expanded or collapsed, and Microsoft says the Details pane’s cloud-file thumbnails and property layout have been improved.

Widgets, emoji, and desktop backgrounds
Windows adds support for Emoji 17.0. The Tips widget can be added to the Widgets board or lock-screen widgets. The preview notes also describe desktop-background reliability and preview improvements, DIB background support, and slideshow wallpapers across multiple desktops.
Accessibility and touchpad controls
The new Open apps maximized setting automatically maximizes app windows when they open. Precision touchpads gain gestures for one-finger vertical scrolling from the left or right edge, as well as automatic scrolling when fingers move near an edge while scrolling.

The notes also describe improvements to keyboard, gamepad, and Narrator navigation on the Bluetooth quick settings page. Magnifier’s taskbar toolbar gets a visual refresh; Microsoft says its views, zoom controls, shortcuts, and Read Aloud behavior remain as before.
Copilot key and camera-roll backup
A setting lets users remap the Copilot key to Right Ctrl or Context Menu. Eligible users can also start Camera roll backup in Settings and finish setup on a phone by scanning a QR code. Microsoft says camera-roll backup availability varies by device and market.

Bluetooth, Settings, and recovery
Microsoft lists fixes involving Bluetooth connection state, Settings stability, Bluetooth audio and microphones, LE Audio, and shared audio. These are reliability changes; the notes do not make a new Bluetooth accessory a requirement.
Other Settings changes include showing packaged-app versions, handling time formats, improving printer and scanner reliability, and preserving camera-sharing options. Ebrima adds support for Garay and Beria Erfe scripts. Windows Recovery Environment can reuse eligible saved Wi-Fi profiles, including supported certificate-based networks; Microsoft says the capability is on by default and administrators can disable it.

Moving to another PC
Microsoft’s notes say PC-to-PC Migration is no longer available and direct users to Windows Backup for supported content when moving to a new PC. The notes do not specify that Windows Backup transfers every app, setting, or file, so check what content is supported for your move.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should install it, and how organizations should roll it out
For an eligible personal PC, check Windows Update and install 26H2 when Microsoft offers it, especially if you want the current annual feature release. The preview-note refinements may matter most if you rely on File Explorer previews, accessibility settings, touchpad gestures, or Windows recovery options; their availability can vary during rollout.
For organizations and education customers, Microsoft says 26H2 is available through management tools including Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft recommends targeted deployment first, to validate apps, devices, and critical workflows before expanding to more users.
How long version 26H2 is supported
Microsoft’s September 29, 2026 announcement states that, after installing version 26H2, supported Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support, while supported Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months.
