That order follows the stories from the 1930s to the 1940s and ’50s, and then to 1968. It is a chronology-based recommendation—not a required order.
What order should you play the Mafia games in?
- Mafia: Definitive Edition — 1930s Lost Heaven, Illinois.
- Mafia II: Definitive Edition — 1940s–50s Empire Bay, New York.
- Mafia III: Definitive Edition — 1968 New Bordeaux, Louisiana.
The settings are identified in the official PlayStation overview. Moving through them in time gives you a straightforward way to experience the trilogy, but the available official information does not establish that this order is necessary to understand the games.

Chronological order or release order?
Choose chronological order for the in-story timeline
The order above is the simplest choice if you want the games’ settings to progress from the 1930s through 1968. It also starts with the first game’s updated edition: 2K describes Mafia: Definitive Edition as a ground-up remake.
Choose release order to follow the games’ launch sequence
Release order is a reasonable alternative if you want to experience the series in the sequence the games originally appeared. The official collection materials establish that the first game is a ground-up remake and the second an HD remaster, but they do not provide the original launch dates. The available sources therefore do not establish a verified release-order list here.
