If you want glasses for hands-free calls and casual listening but do not want a built-in camera, look at camera-free audio glasses. JBL Soundgear Frames document call-focused hardware and an eight-hour maximum play-time specification; Amazon Echo Frames add hands-free Alexa features. The available manufacturer information does not establish which has better call quality or long-wear comfort, so choose based on ecosystem, fit, prescription needs, and current availability.
What camera-free audio glasses do
Camera-free audio glasses use speakers built into the frames to play audio while leaving the ears uncovered. They can support phone calls and listening without the recording concerns associated with camera-enabled smart glasses. “Open-ear” describes the design; it does not mean audio is private or that you will always hear everything around you.
Two options with relevant official product information are JBL Soundgear Frames and Amazon Echo Frames. They serve similar hands-free needs but have different documented strengths: JBL publishes specifications for its microphones and connectivity, while Amazon highlights Alexa integration.
Compare the documented features
| Feature | JBL Soundgear Frames | Amazon Echo Frames |
|---|---|---|
| Audio and calls | Open-ear audio and hands-free calls; JBL specifies a two-microphone array with noise-cancellation and echo-suppression algorithms. JBL product specifications | Amazon describes open-ear audio and call capability. The cited announcement does not give a directly comparable microphone specification. Amazon’s Echo Frames announcement |
| Phone and assistant features | Bluetooth 5.2 pairing and customization through the JBL Headphones app, according to JBL. JBL product specifications | Hands-free Alexa access; Amazon support also documents a top-contact calling shortcut for supported 3rd Generation glasses. Amazon Echo Frames support |
| Battery | Up to eight hours of play time, a manufacturer specification rather than an independent endurance test. JBL product specifications | A comparable current battery figure is not stated in the Amazon sources cited here. |
| Prescription lenses | JBL says an optician can fit prescription lenses; confirm compatibility for the exact frame and lens type with the optician. JBL product specifications | Echo Frames are spectacle frames intended to hold prescription lenses, but options and fitting depend on model and optician. Amazon Echo Frames support |
| Availability | Variant- and region-dependent. JBL’s U.S. round-frame page showed “Sold Out” and “This item is currently not available” at the time checked; the global square-frame product page describes the product. Check the exact variant and seller. JBL U.S. round-frame listing | Current stock is not established by the Amazon product and support sources cited here; check the listing for your market and model. |
Which one fits your priorities?
Choose JBL Soundgear Frames if call hardware details matter
JBL explicitly lists an advanced two-microphone array, Bluetooth 5.2, an IP54 rating, and up to eight hours of play time. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test findings. The published details make JBL the more straightforward option to assess on paper if you want stated microphone and connectivity specifications.

Check fit, privacy, and real-world performance before buying
- Confirm the exact frame and stock. Availability can vary by region, frame shape, and seller. A product page describing a model does not guarantee that it is currently available in your market.
- Ask about prescription compatibility. Check the precise frame, lens type, and fitting options with an optician before ordering.
- Think about your listening environment. Open-ear audio does not guarantee privacy. Amazon cautions that Echo Frames may divert attention or impair awareness of surrounding sounds; adjust volume and use them cautiously where attention to ambient sound matters. Amazon safety guidance and volume guidance.
- Try them or seek recent independent reviews if comfort or call results are decisive. Manufacturer specifications do not settle how well either frame fits, how much sound leaks, or how callers hear you in everyday conditions. Side-by-side evidence for those factors is not established here.
