Choose smart glasses by tracing what each feature senses, when it activates, where its data goes, and how you can control or delete it. A recording light, local storage, or a privacy setting may address one part of that path—not every camera, microphone, AI, app, or cloud function. Check the documentation for the exact model and the region where you will use it.
Start with the data path, not the privacy label
“Smart glasses” is a broad category, and there is no single privacy answer that applies to every model. A camera, microphone, voice assistant, AI feature, companion app, local gallery, and cloud service may each have different triggers and controls.
For each feature you plan to use, follow the path from sensing to deletion: what is collected, what activates it, where it is processed or stored, whether it is transferred or shared, and what happens when you delete it. A manufacturer’s statement about one path—for example, where gallery photos are stored—does not establish how every other feature handles data.
Use this checklist for each exact model
- List the sensors. Check whether the glasses have cameras, microphones, location features, or other sensors, and identify which features use each one.
- Find each activation method. Does a sensor start with a physical button, wake word, app action, AI request, or a background feature? Look for separate answers for camera capture and voice interactions.
- Decode every indicator. Find out whether a light signals a saved photo, video capture, live streaming, AI image processing, or another state. Do not assume one cue represents all sensor activity.
- Check which controls are independent. Can you disable the camera, microphone, assistant, location, cloud media transfer, and optional data sharing separately? Note whether there is a hardware mute or power control.
- Trace storage and transfers. Determine whether content stays on the glasses, moves to your phone, or goes to a company service—and when you choose or can prevent that transfer.
- Read the retention and deletion terms. Check whether you can review and delete recordings, voice activity, prompts, and account data. Find out whether deletion also covers copies or derived data; do not assume it does unless the current policy says so.
- Review the companion app and account. Check required app permissions, such as microphone, location, contacts, and photos, and whether an account or phone is needed for setup or core functions.
- Test the optional-feature trade-off on paper. Find out what still works with AI or cloud sharing disabled, and what you lose by switching those features off.
- Look for a security-support commitment. Check whether the manufacturer states how updates are delivered and how long the model will receive software or security support.
- Consider a lower-sensor alternative. If you only need photos, navigation, or hands-free audio, consider whether a phone camera or audio-only wearable would meet the need with less sensor access or less ambiguity for people nearby.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) offers a useful general checklist for connected products: what information a device needs, what else it collects and how often, and whether it shares information with other organizations and why. Its June 2026 consumer IoT guidance summary says manufacturers and developers should build in privacy, use protective default settings, limit collection to what is necessary, make consent clear and withdrawable, explain practices understandably, and maintain security. That guidance is not a product certification for any particular glasses.

What a recording light does—and does not—tell you
Meta’s July 7, 2026 FAQ says each pair of its AI glasses has a white capture LED that blinks to signify when content is being captured for the wearer’s gallery. Meta also says covering or disabling the LED automatically disables the camera. That is a vendor description of Meta products, not a category-wide guarantee or independent audit.
The statement is specifically about capture for the gallery. It does not establish that the same light signals every AI camera prompt, voice interaction, processing activity, or data transfer. Check the product’s documentation for each of those functions separately, including whether they have a visible cue and a distinct control.

Check where photos and video are stored
Meta says photos and videos captured for the gallery stay privately on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone; the wearer then chooses whether to share that content elsewhere. Its responsible-innovation page similarly describes preferences for captures, voice, and notifications in the app, and says captures remain on the glasses until transferred using the app.
These are statements about Meta’s products and described gallery captures. They do not prove that all processing is local, that every model or region behaves identically, or that every AI feature avoids cloud processing. For any model, look for the storage location and transfer point for each feature you intend to use, then consult the current product policy for retention, deletion, and other data uses.

Evaluate microphones and AI separately from the camera
A camera indicator does not answer what a microphone is doing. The ICO’s body-worn-video guidance says audio recording adds privacy intrusion and recommends considering separate controls for video and audio when both are available. The guidance is written mainly for organizational surveillance deployments, not as consumer-product certification or a direct legal rule for ordinary use. It is still a useful reason to check whether the glasses let you control the microphone and voice assistant independently of the camera.
Also ask what happens when you speak to an assistant or ask an AI feature to interpret a scene: what triggers the interaction, whether audio or images are sent off-device, what settings govern those transfers, and how activity can be reviewed or deleted. Do not infer the answers from the camera light alone.

Account for people around you and local rules
Smart glasses can support accessibility and other useful functions, but they can also make recording less obvious to people nearby. In September 2026, the ICO described both the benefits and risks, including recording without people’s knowledge and harassment, and emphasized transparency, accountability, control, and data minimization in physical spaces.
As a practical courtesy, tell people when recording is relevant, ask before recording in sensitive or private settings, and pause capture where people reasonably expect privacy. A device light is a cue, not a substitute for communication, venue rules, or consent. Wearing the glasses does not itself establish that others have agreed to be recorded.

The ICO says UK data-protection law does not apply to personal-data use solely for a person’s personal or household activities, while wider sharing online may bring data-protection considerations into play. This is UK regulator commentary, not legal advice for every jurisdiction or situation. Check the rules where you will use the glasses, especially if you plan to record or share footage beyond personal use.
How to compare models without guessing
Compare exact models in the market where you will use them. Fill in each row from current manufacturer documentation rather than treating a feature name or privacy claim as proof of a particular data practice.

Do not rank products as “most private” unless comparable, current documentation supports the claim across these dimensions. A model may offer a useful control in one area while leaving other data paths unclear.
