The strongest examples here are Metroid Prime Remastered and Mass Effect Legendary Edition; the PS3 ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection is a notable legacy release. The list is curated, not an objective ranking: the available evidence supports these examples but does not establish a definitive top five. A PS4 reissue of Shadow of the Colossus is included as a useful category boundary, since its developer called it a remake, not a remaster.
What makes a remaster the definitive version?
“Definitive” is a practical judgment, not a guarantee that every player will prefer the newer edition. A useful comparison asks whether the re-release keeps the original’s design and mood while improving presentation, controls, accessibility, or the amount of included content. Platform access and release format matter too: an older physical collection may be historically notable but harder to obtain than a current release.
These criteria help distinguish a worthwhile update from a version that is simply newer. They also explain why a comprehensive collection can be a stronger recommendation than a game with more extensive visual changes.
Which remasters stand out?
1. Metroid Prime Remastered
Nintendo describes Metroid Prime Remastered as an HD remaster of the original Metroid Prime, first released on GameCube. It enhances visuals and sound and adds dual-stick controls, making aiming more familiar to players used to modern first-person games. Nintendo’s player guide says the original atmosphere is retained, which is important for a game built around solitude and discovery.

The updated aiming supports rather than rewrites the core loop: exploring Tallon IV, scanning the environment, and revisiting areas as Samus gains abilities. The guide also describes additional control configurations, Casual difficulty, and unlockable gallery content. One practical difference remains: the game does not auto-save. Players must save at a Save Station or their gunship, so it is worth saving before setting the game aside.
The remaster is available for Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo says a physical version was released. Current stock and pricing have not been established here, so availability may vary by retailer and region.

2. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition packages the single-player base content for Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, along with more than 40 DLC items, according to EA’s product information accessed in 2026. EA also describes the collection as optimized for 4K Ultra HD. Its strongest case as a definitive package is breadth: three main games and a substantial set of add-on content are brought together in one collection.
BioWare framed the project as modernization rather than reinvention. In its official announcement, the studio said: “Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form.” That distinction matters for players who want the original trilogy’s story and identity, rather than a new interpretation.

Mac Walters, project director for the Legendary Edition and lead writer of the original trilogy, described the scale of the collection in an EA release: “Remastering a game, let alone three, is a huge undertaking as there’s over 100 hours of gameplay included, but we wanted to do this for our fans as well as a new generation of gamers looking to jump into the iconic story of Shepard.” The quoted “over 100 hours” describes the included gameplay at the time of that statement; it is not a promise of a fixed playtime for every player.
3. ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3)
Sony’s 2011 announcement for the PS3 Blu-ray collection lists HD and 3D versions of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, full 1080p HD, stereoscopic 3D, 7.1 surround sound, trophies, and behind-the-scenes bonus material. For players with a compatible PS3 setup, the collection combines two distinctive games with presentation upgrades and extras on one disc.

This is a legacy physical release, not a current-format recommendation. Its features are documented in Sony’s 2011 launch announcement, but present-day stock and ease of purchase are not established. Treat it as a useful option for collectors or existing PS3 owners rather than assuming it is readily available.

It is better classified as a remake. PlayStation says Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio rebuilt the PS4 version from the ground up. In a PlayStation Blog interview, Bluepoint president Marco Thrush put it plainly: “With Shadow of the Colossus we’re working on a remake – it’s not really a remaster.”

The distinction is useful because a polished return of an older game is not automatically a remaster. Here, the developers’ description of a ground-up rebuild makes the PS4 edition a boundary case, not a strict example of the category. It may still be the version a player wants; it simply belongs in a different conversation from remasters that update an existing game while aiming to preserve its underlying work.
