The clues in this topic point to two different uranium compounds, not one newly uncovered structure. Uranium antimonide (USb₂) is associated with singlet-based magnetism, a concept proposed in the 1960s; a separate study describes spiral magnetic order in UPtGe. The available sources do not establish that a compound known since the 1960s has just revealed a hidden spiral structure.
What the 1960s clue actually refers to
The 1960s date belongs to the theory of singlet-based magnets, not to evidence that USb₂ itself was discovered then. In a 2019 report, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Advanced Light Source described X-ray absorption measurements on USb₂ that found uranium-electron behavior consistent with this kind of magnetism. The ALS report explains that transient magnetic constituents called spin excitons can stabilize and multiply into a magnetic phase. Charles Q. Choi’s IEEE Spectrum account notes that the concept dates to the 1960s.
In other words, the long-predicted idea and the later evidence for a material showing it are separate parts of the story. The ALS account attributes the underlying 2019 paper to L. Miao and colleagues, “High temperature singlet-based magnetism from Hund’s rule correlations,” published in Nature Communications 10, 644 (2019), DOI 10.1038/s41467-019-08497-3.
USb₂: singlet-based magnetism, not a reported spiral
The USb₂ finding concerns a magnetic phase associated with spin excitons. The ALS report places that phase at about −70 °C (about 203 K). It says the phase can be sustained to higher temperatures under pressure, but does not report room-temperature magnetism as an established result. Reaching that regime is presented as a possibility that would require further chemical tuning.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The same distinction applies to potential data-storage uses: they are future prospects, not a demonstrated application or deployed technology. The reported measurements support a scientific result about magnetic behavior; they do not establish a consumer product or practical storage system.
UPtGe: the compound linked to spiral order
A separate 2017 first-principles study describes UPtGe as having an incommensurate plane spiral, also called cycloidal, magnetic structure. Its abstract calls spiral ground-state configurations unusual among uranium compounds in the context of strong magnetic anisotropy. This is the source of the spiral-structure clue, but it concerns UPtGe rather than USb₂. The study abstract describes its conclusion as: “The magnetic structure of the UPtGe is an incommensurate spiral structure.”

How the three uranium-magnetism stories differ
| Compound | Reported phenomenon | Evidence described in the cited source | Condition or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| USb₂ (uranium antimonide) | Singlet-based magnetism involving spin excitons | X-ray absorption measurements, as reported by the Advanced Light Source | Magnetic phase around −70 °C; higher temperatures under pressure are reported, while room-temperature behavior remains prospective. ALS report, 2019 |
| UPtGe | Incommensurate plane spiral (cycloidal) order | First-principles study | Spiral ground-state configurations are discussed in connection with strong magnetic anisotropy. Study abstract, 2017 |
| URu₂Si₂ | High-field magnetic order, including an up-up-down moment pattern | High-field NMR, as discussed in a Japan Atomic Energy Agency review | A new state is described above 35 T. The review also discusses a 17.5 K transition whose origin it said remained unidentified at the time. JAEA review, 2015 |
URu₂Si₂ is a third, distinct case, not evidence for either the USb₂ singlet-based result or the UPtGe spiral structure. Its high-field behavior belongs to a separate discussion of magnetic order and the then-unresolved hidden-order transition. The values above 35 T and 17.5 K refer only to URu₂Si₂ in the 2015 review.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does one compound match the full headline?
No single compound is established by these sources as both known since the 1960s and newly found to have a hidden spiral structure. The 1960s reference concerns the proposed theory of singlet-based magnetism; the USb₂ report concerns evidence for that phenomenon; and the spiral-order finding concerns UPtGe. Treating these clues as one discovery would conflate separate compounds and separate magnetic phenomena.
