With a well-designed mouse connected through its dedicated USB receiver, latency may be comparable to—or lower than—some wired models; Bluetooth is the wireless mode to avoid when responsiveness matters. For a real buying decision, compare the specific mouse’s fit, weight, measured latency, connection mode, controls, and upkeep—not just whether it has a cable.
Does a wireless gaming mouse have more latency than a wired one?
Not necessarily. RTINGS’ September 29, 2026 guidance says some wireless gaming mice can match or outperform some wired models on latency, and that the difference is not noticeable in most cases. That is review guidance, not a guarantee for every mouse, connection, game, or player. The exact model and how it connects matter.
For gaming, use a mouse’s dedicated USB receiver rather than Bluetooth when responsiveness and connection reliability are priorities. RTINGS review author Duncan MacRae puts it this way: “Use a dedicated USB receiver for gaming, as Bluetooth has higher latency and is less reliable.” A mouse may support both modes, so check which mode is active before judging its performance. RTINGS’ 2026 wireless gaming mouse guide also distinguishes FPS priorities—low click latency, accurate tracking, and low weight—from the extra programmable buttons often useful for MMO and MOBA play.
Latency comparisons are meaningful only when you know what was measured and under what conditions. GamersNexus’ explanation of click-latency measurement describes measuring the interval from a physical button signal to the host receiving the USB input. Its demonstration was not a controlled head-to-head comparison of equivalent wired and wireless mice, so its older device readings should not be used as a current product ranking. When comparing candidates, look for independent measurements for the exact models and note the connection mode and polling rate used in testing.

What does “lightweight” mean for an actual mouse?
Weight is a model-specific specification, not a property of wired or wireless design. RTINGS’ September 2026 guide lists the wireless Razer Viper V4 Pro at 48.9 g and the wireless Logitech G PRO X2 SUPERSTRIKE at 60.8 g, while its budget wireless example, the Logitech G305 LIGHTSPEED, is listed at 101.7 g. These examples show why it is worth checking the listed weight of each mouse you are considering rather than assuming wireless means lighter.
Grams are only part of how a mouse moves. Shell shape, balance, feet, hand size, grip style, and the feel of lifting or swiping all affect comfort and control. A cable can create drag or catch on a desk; a wireless mouse removes that tether but adds a receiver and battery to manage. If possible, try the shape in your hand, especially before committing to a mouse for long sessions. RTINGS’ general mouse recommendations likewise emphasize fit alongside latency, polling rate, and game-specific needs.

Which matters more: connection, grip, or game type?
Start with comfort and the demands of the games you play. A mouse that is technically fast but awkward in your hand is a poor fit; a comfortable mouse with unsuitable buttons may also slow down a game that depends on many inputs.
- For FPS games: Prioritize a shape you can control, low click latency, accurate sensor tracking, and a weight that feels comfortable during repeated swipes and lifts. Use the dedicated receiver if the mouse is wireless.
- For MMO and MOBA games: Consider whether extra side buttons and programmable inputs are more useful than the lightest possible shell. Check that the button layout suits your grip and that you can reach the controls comfortably.
- For any game: Compare measured performance and fit for the exact mouse, not a general claim about wired or wireless devices. Also check handedness and whether the shape remains comfortable through a sustained session.
Evidence about preference is useful, but it does not establish a universal performance winner. In a 2023 controlled study, Wang and colleagues compared wired and wireless conditions and 80 g versus 87 g mice with professional Overwatch players. Most objective differences were small or not statistically significant, while wireless mice received higher subjective ratings; 56.3% of participants selected the very-light wireless mouse as their favorite. The authors wrote, “Generally, the wireless mice achieved better results than wired ones in terms of error rate, muscle activity while gaming and hand kinematics.” The study involved a small sample, limited exposure, a specific game, and experimental mice; it does not show that wireless improves every player’s results or that lighter is always better. Wang et al.’s 2023 study also notes the need to investigate a broader range of mouse weights.

What are the battery and cable trade-offs?
Wired avoids battery charging or replacement and receiver management, but the cable can be a source of drag. Wireless frees movement from the tether, at the cost of battery upkeep and keeping the receiver available. The right trade-off depends on whether you prefer a cable-free desk or the simplicity of a mouse that never needs charging or a battery change.
Check the specific mouse’s battery arrangement and treat advertised runtimes as estimates, not guaranteed endurance. For example, RTINGS reports that the Logitech G305 uses one AA battery and cites an advertised runtime of up to 250 hours; that figure is manufacturer-advertised and usage-dependent, not an independent battery-life measurement. The Razer Basilisk V3 X HyperSpeed is described as using AA batteries, with a dedicated receiver for competitive play and Bluetooth for casual use. RTINGS’ guide provides those product details, but battery life and specifications can vary with use and product revisions.

How should you compare two lightweight gaming mice?
Use the same checklist for each candidate. The wired/wireless label is only one part of the comparison.
