Disconnect a suspected compromised smart device from Wi-Fi or Ethernet as soon as it is safe to do so; power it off if that is the only practical way to cut its network access. Keep it offline while you follow the manufacturer’s recovery guidance. For lasting protection, use a separate network only after verifying that your router actually blocks access to your main home network. Isolation limits communication; it does not clean the device or prove that other devices are safe.
Disconnect the device first
If a smart camera, speaker, thermostat, or other IoT device is behaving suspiciously, stop its network access promptly. Use the device’s controls to disable Wi-Fi, unplug its Ethernet cable, or power it down if necessary. Choose an action that truly takes it offline; merely moving it to another room or unplugging an Ethernet cable when it also has Wi-Fi will not disconnect it.
If the incident may involve serious harm, preserve relevant evidence and contact a qualified incident responder or the manufacturer before resetting the device. The right first action depends on the device and circumstances, and a factory reset can erase evidence or configuration.
Check what else is connected
Once the suspect device is offline, identify it in your router’s connected-device list or logs, if available. Look for unfamiliar devices or activity that coincides with the suspected incident. Router interfaces and logging capabilities differ, and identifying a particular IoT device or the network communications it needs can be difficult. NIST’s 2025 release on characterizing IoT network behavior discusses why understanding device traffic can help with identification and access control.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume that taking one device offline establishes that the rest of the network is clean. Isolation limits the device’s opportunity to communicate while disconnected, but does not determine whether it was compromised earlier or whether other devices were affected.
Keep it separate during recovery
While the device is offline, follow the manufacturer’s current incident and recovery instructions. Check whether a supported firmware update is available and change affected credentials when the vendor advises it. Avoid treating a factory reset as a universal first step: it may remove useful evidence, erase configuration, and may not address every cause of suspicious behavior.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Reconnect only after completing the device-specific recovery guidance and any recommended credential changes. If the device cannot receive security updates or continues to behave suspiciously, ask the manufacturer about replacement or safe retirement rather than returning it to the network without a recovery plan.

| Approach | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Disable Wi-Fi, disconnect Ethernet, or power off | Provides immediate containment when it fully removes network access. | The device is offline, not repaired; reconnect only after recovery. |
| Router guest network | Can separate a device from the main network when the router and settings isolate guest clients from the LAN. | It is not a substitute for disconnecting an actively suspect device. Verify the exact model’s behavior and settings. |
| Separate network segment with router rules or VLANs | Can limit communication between IoT devices and other devices, depending on routing and firewall rules. | Configuration is more complex, and rules that are too restrictive can break required functions. |
| MUD-based restrictions | Can allow traffic needed for a device’s intended function and restrict other communication when compatible components support it. | Requires compatible device and network implementations, correctly configured. |
Verify guest-network isolation
A guest network is useful only if that router’s guest settings actually prevent access to the primary LAN and other devices. Behavior and settings vary by model. Consult the router’s documentation and confirm the relevant local-network access setting; do not assume that the word “guest” guarantees isolation. NIST describes segregation and isolation as ways to limit the impact of a compromised IoT device in its consumer guidance.
Use stronger segmentation when available
If your router supports separate network segments and access rules, place IoT devices on a segment that restricts unnecessary communication with computers and other home devices. Rules must still allow the device’s legitimate functions. NIST NCCoE’s SP 1800-15 documentation discusses separating IoT devices with known risks from everyday computing devices and using Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) to limit traffic. The NIST MUD guide describes that approach; it depends on compatible implementations and correct configuration.

CISA also describes home network segmentation and guest Wi-Fi as configuration options in its Federal Mobile Workplace Security guidance. Router features are model- and configuration-specific, so check your router’s documentation rather than relying on a generic claim about guest networks. NIST’s consumer-grade router cybersecurity requirements provide security context, not a recommendation for any particular router.
