Microsoft lists Seagate 1TB and 2TB cards as Series S-compatible, and Western Digital documents its Xbox-licensed WD_BLACK C50 in capacities up to 2TB. A USB external HDD or SSD is useful for backward-compatible games and for storing or transferring optimized games, but those optimized games generally must be moved to the console’s internal storage or an expansion card before you can play them.
Which type of storage should you choose?
The right option depends on whether you want to play optimized games from the added drive or simply keep more games installed and transfer them when needed.
- For direct play of optimized games: use a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card.
- For extra space for compatible older games, or as a game library to transfer from: use USB 3.1 external storage. Optimized games on USB generally need to be moved to internal storage or an expansion card before play.
Microsoft says its Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards match the internal SSD’s performance, and separately lists USB 3.1 external HDD support on the Xbox Series S product page. Xbox Wire notes that USB storage can hold optimized games for transfer and that Quick Resume works with games played from internal storage, an expansion card, or USB storage; that does not mean an optimized game can always run from USB. Seagate’s external-drive guidance says optimized games on USB must be moved to internal storage or a Seagate expansion card for gameplay.
Expansion cards for playing optimized games
Both Seagate’s Storage Expansion Card and WD_BLACK C50 are documented options for adding storage that can play Xbox Series X|S-optimized games. Compare the capacity you need and the current price and availability in your market; the available sources do not establish a universally cheapest choice.

The cited manufacturer specifications establish supported capacities and use, not comparative performance tests or current prices. Check local stock and the exact capacity listing before buying.
USB external storage for archive and transfer
A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD can provide additional space for compatible older games and a place to keep optimized games when they are not installed on the console’s internal storage or an expansion card. Xbox Wire’s storage primer describes USB storage as a way to hold optimized games for quick transfer. For actually playing an optimized game, however, follow Seagate’s stated requirement to move it back to internal storage or an expansion card.

USB storage therefore makes most sense when your priority is adding library capacity or reducing the need to download games again, rather than playing optimized games directly from the external drive. Microsoft’s Series S page separately identifies USB 3.1 external HDD support; the cited page does not establish a universal free-space amount for every console configuration.

Microsoft lists Series S configurations with 512GB and 1TB of internal storage. Those are configuration capacities, not a promise of the same amount of free space available for games on every console. Choose an expansion based on your installed library and whether direct play from added storage matters to you.

How to make the choice
- Decide where you need to play. If you want optimized games to run from the added storage, select a compatible expansion card. If storage and transfer are enough, consider USB 3.1 external storage.
- Choose a capacity. Microsoft lists Seagate cards in 1TB and 2TB selections; WD documents C50 capacity up to 2TB. Match the choice to how many large games you want available without moving or reinstalling them.
- Check your local listing. Compare the price, capacity, availability, and exact model in your region. Prices, promotions, and stock vary, so there is no supported universal cheapest option.
