High-tier characters do not guarantee a high-performing team. In Genshin Impact, the four characters need to work together: their roles, field time, elemental application, energy, abilities, and builds must support a repeatable damage plan. Before replacing someone or spending resources, diagnose where that plan breaks down.
Start with the team’s jobs
Give each character a practical role in the team: primary on-field damage, off-field damage or elemental application, buffer or debuffer, healer or shielder, or another enabling role. These are working labels, not permanent character classifications; builds and team plans can change what a character does.
Then ask whether the four roles support one clear plan. A character can be powerful on their own but still compete with another unit for active time, or fail to enable the reactions the team is meant to use. The Version 2.5 team-building guide identifies field time, rotation, energy, reactions, and composition as connected considerations. If two damage dealers both need extended time on field, one may interrupt the other’s damage window rather than add to it.
Write out the rotation and check coverage
A rotation is the sequence of actions the team uses to set up and deal damage, not simply a list of four strong characters. Write down the order in which you use skills and bursts, then check whether the intended damage dealer is active while the team’s relevant buffs, debuffs, and off-field abilities are operating.
#1 Best Overall
- Effect timing: Do buffs, debuffs, and off-field abilities last through the damage window, or expire before the main damage happens?
- Field time: Does the sequence leave enough uninterrupted time for the intended on-field character?
- Cooldowns: Are the abilities ready again when the next cycle begins?
- Repeatability: Can you perform the sequence again in the actual encounter, rather than only once?
If the damage window and support effects do not line up, changing a character may not be the first fix. Adjusting the order or timing of actions may better align the team’s coverage.
Check burst availability across repeated cycles
If the team’s plan depends on bursts, watch what happens in the next rotation: which characters have their bursts ready, and which do not? The team-building guide treats energy cost and energy management as composition concerns, with bursts ideally available each cycle. That is a general planning principle, not a universal Energy Recharge target. Requirements depend on the character, teammates, and combat situation, so a single percentage cannot diagnose every team.
Rank #2
If an important burst is missing, note which character is short and at what point in the encounter. That tells you whether the rotation is failing because its energy needs are not being met, rather than because the characters are inherently weak together.
Verify the reaction plan and elemental application
Name the reaction the team is meant to trigger, then check whether the needed elements are being applied at the right time and by the character whose damage the plan is built around. Having two compatible elements in a party does not, by itself, prove the intended reaction is happening consistently.

- It is the Taisho Period in Japan; Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon
- Tanjiro resolves to become a “demon slayer” so that he can turn his sister back into a human and kill the demon that massacred his family
- Follow Tanjiro through the story from the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” anime as he faces demons in order to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human
- Master the multitude of spectacular skills of a wide roster of characters from the anime, including Tanjiro and Nezuko, to overcome challengers in head-to-head battle, locally and online
Attack sequences can matter. For example, a Yoimiya guide explains that internal cooldown affects how often her normal attacks apply an element. That is a character-specific example, not a rule that applies identically to every character or reaction. It illustrates why a team’s actual application and timing should be checked instead of assuming every hit triggers an elemental effect.
Review builds against each character’s job
Inspect each character’s weapon, artifact set and stats, and relevant talent levels in the context of the role they play in this team. A strong character can contribute less than expected if the build supports a different job, an important talent is underdeveloped, or a set effect is being duplicated without benefit.

Ads can often be disruptive and distracting, so having the option to play without them significantly improves overall enjoyment. With no interruptions, players can focus solely on strategy and gameplay, creating a smoother and more immersive experience.
One concrete example is Nahida: HoYoWiki notes that the four-piece effect of Deepwood Memories does not stack. If two teammates wear the set for that same effect, one set’s effect is redundant; that artifact opportunity might serve the team better in another way. This is a specific example, not a complete build prescription for Nahida or other characters. See HoYoWiki’s Nahida entry for the stated set interaction.
Talent investment should also reflect where a character’s contribution comes from. The Yoimiya guide, for example, prioritizes her Normal Attack talent because it accounts for most of her damage in the guide’s build context. Do not assume that priority transfers to another character; check the contribution that matters for the role being played.

If you are considering swapping a character, judge the change by what it fixes and what it disrupts. A replacement that appears stronger on a tier list may not improve the team if it introduces a role gap or makes the rotation harder to repeat.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Field-time demand | How much active time does the candidate need, and does that fit alongside the current damage dealer? |
| Role and reaction fit | Will the team retain the elemental application, reaction, buff, defense, or healing its plan needs? |
| Rotation and coverage | Do cooldowns and effect durations support a sequence the team can repeat? |
| Energy needs | Can the team use the necessary bursts consistently in the encounter where it struggles? |
| Build investment | Can your current weapons, artifacts, and talents support the new role, or would the change require substantial rebuilding? |
The best answer depends on your roster and the content you are playing. Treat a tier list as a starting point for evaluating individual characters, not as a guarantee that any combination of high-ranked units will work as a team.
Gather the details that make a diagnosis possible
There is no universal fix without the team and the situation. To get useful advice, share the four characters and, where relevant, their levels and constellations; weapons; artifact sets and stats; talent levels; the rotation you use; and the content or enemy where performance drops. Those details help distinguish a role conflict from a rotation, energy, reaction, or build issue.
