There is no single artifact setup for a role label. Start with what a character’s Talents scale from and what the character does in your team; then account for Energy Recharge (ER), reaction ownership, team buffs, and rotation. Damage dealers usually want stats that improve their actual damage, while supports should meet the requirements of their utility and, where possible, equip a set that benefits the team. These are starting points, not fixed rules: KeqingMains notes that Raiden Shogun’s build can differ between Hypercarry and Hyperbloom teams.
Start with the character’s kit and team job
Check the Talent descriptions before choosing main stats. Most damage-dealing Talents scale with ATK unless the description specifies another stat. Then decide what the character contributes in the team you actually play: on-field damage, off-field damage, buffs, healing, defense, or reactions. These roles overlap, and a support can still contribute meaningful personal damage.
ER is a practical constraint, not a universal target. If the character needs a Burst for the intended rotation, establish enough ER for that team and rotation before trading it away for offensive stats. KeqingMains recommends using its Energy Recharge Calculator for character-specific requirements rather than relying on a role-wide threshold.
Stats and artifacts by role
On-field or personal-damage DPS
For an ATK-scaling elemental damage dealer, a common starting setup is ATK% or, when the team’s reactions warrant it, EM Sands; an elemental-damage Goblet; and a CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG Circlet. Favor CRIT and the character’s relevant scaling stats in substats after meeting the rotation’s ER needs. The right balance changes with the character, weapon, reactions, and team buffs. KeqingMains generally advises DPS characters to prioritize useful artifact stats over set bonuses, with exceptions such as Blizzard Strayer’s CRIT Rate value for Freeze DPS.
#1 Best Overall
Tartaglia illustrates the baseline without making it universal: his quick guide lists ATK% Sands, Hydro DMG Goblet, and a CRIT Circlet. Its substat priority begins with CRIT, followed by ATK%, EM, and ER; the guide notes that ER matters until he can use his Ranged Burst every rotation. See the Tartaglia Quick Guide for that character-specific setup.
Off-field damage dealer
Build around the scaling and damage type of the character’s Skill or Burst, and meet its ER needs. Off-field status does not mean the character should ignore personal damage if that damage is a substantial part of the team’s output.
Rank #2
Fischl’s guide prioritizes ER until the requirement is met, then CRIT and ATK%; it notes ATK% and EM can be comparable in Aggravate teams and recommends Golden Troupe for off-field Skill damage. Her ER requirement varies with constellation, team, and enemies. These details are specific to Fischl, not a template for every off-field unit. See the Fischl Quick Guide.
Buffer or utility support
If a necessary buff or utility comes from the Burst, first make sure the Burst is available for the planned rotation. Then invest in the stats that improve that buff, the character’s damage, or another part of the kit. Choose artifact sets according to team needs: Noblesse Oblige can benefit Burst-reliant ATK-scaling teams; Viridescent Venerer is an Anemo option for reducing resistance to the element Swirled; and Deepwood Memories reduces Dendro resistance for Dendro teams. These are useful options, not exclusive assignments for every team.

Prioritize the stat that improves the character’s healing or defensive utility. If the utility depends on a Burst, account for ER as well. A set can add more team value than extra personal damage.
For a pure-healer Kuki Shinobu setup, her guide offers HP% and EM main-stat options, with Healing Bonus, HP%, or EM on the Circlet; its priority favors HP% over EM, then ER and CRIT. It also describes Tenacity of the Millelith as boosting her healing while providing a team ATK buff. This is one build context, not a universal rule for Kuki in every team. See the Kuki Shinobu Quick Guide.
Reaction driver
Identify who triggers the reaction, how often it happens, and whether the character also deals substantial Talent damage. EM is especially important for transformative reaction damage, but “use triple EM” is not a safe rule for every reaction team. Some reactions can CRIT or add damage to Talent hits, changing the value of EM relative to CRIT and ATK.
Keqing’s Aggravate guide prioritizes CRIT and treats ATK% and EM as roughly comparable in that context. EM can become more valuable in Quickbloom or Quickburn because of additional transformative reaction damage. The build therefore depends on the team’s reaction mix and damage sources. See the Keqing Quick Guide.

How to choose between a set bonus and better stats
- Check the rotation. If the character needs ER to use a key Burst on time, meet the team- and rotation-specific requirement first.
- Match stats to the job. Use Talent descriptions and a character-specific guide to identify what improves damage, healing, shielding, buffs, or reaction contribution.
- Consider the team effect. A four-piece set may be worthwhile when it provides a valuable team buff or utility such as resistance reduction.
- Compare the actual artifacts. Weigh the set effect against the pieces’ substats and the team’s buffs. As a general tendency, DPS builds often favor stronger stats over a set bonus, while supports more often benefit from four-piece team sets; neither is an absolute rule.
This trade-off follows from how damage is calculated: attacker stats and Talents interact with enemy defenses and resistances, as well as reactions. Because those multipliers and team conditions differ, there is no stat that is best for every character and team. KeqingMains’ Genshin Impact Artifacts Guide explains the broader framework. It also notes that, with enough investment, any character can clear overworld and story content; optimizing is most useful when you have a specific team or performance goal.
Use character guides as team-specific starting points
KeqingMains is a community theorycrafting resource, not official HoYoverse documentation. Its character recommendations can change as characters, artifact sets, teams, and rotations change. Treat the examples above as context-specific guidance, then check the current character guide for the team you intend to use.
