To find out whether a smart device still gets security updates, identify its exact model and hardware revision, check the manufacturer’s published support commitment, then compare its installed firmware with official release notes and security advisories. A device that still works—or still connects to its app or cloud service—is not necessarily still receiving security patches.
Identify the exact device before checking support
Start with the product label, device settings, or the manufacturer’s app. Record the manufacturer, full model number, hardware revision, region, and installed firmware or software version. Product names can cover several hardware and regional variants, and update eligibility may differ between them.
For a camera, router, thermostat, or other connected device, do not rely on a family name such as “SmartCam X” if the label lists a more specific model or revision. Use those exact details when searching support pages or contacting the manufacturer.
Find the manufacturer’s support commitment
Look on the official product support page, security or update policy, product documentation, and any end-of-life notice. Search for a minimum security-update period or a specific support end date. Save the relevant page and note when you checked it, since a manufacturer may extend a support period or revise its published date.

ETSI’s consumer IoT standard says an end-of-life policy for updateable software should clearly state the minimum period for software updates and the reasons for that period. This is a standard, not a universal legal requirement: applicability depends on the product and jurisdiction. See ETSI TS 103 645 V1.1.1, provision 4.3-4. ETSI also recommends that support-period information be accessible and clear, while NIST treats update instructions, alerts, and end-of-support effects as customer-facing support information. ETSI consumer IoT guidance and NIST manufacturer information guidance provide further detail.
There is no single support duration established for every IoT device. The manufacturer’s policy and applicable regional requirements matter. For example, Australia’s guidance refers to rules requiring manufacturers to publish end-of-support periods for smart devices in that jurisdiction. Australian guidance

Check whether updates are actually being issued
- Check the installed version. Find the firmware or software version in the device’s settings or official companion app. Note whether the device says an update is available or reports that it is current.
- Run the official update check. Use the manufacturer’s device interface or app, following its instructions. Determine whether updates install automatically, require manual approval, or are provided by another organization.
- Compare with official records. Look for release notes, security advisories, and support notes for the exact model and revision. A version comparison is meaningful only if the release applies to your variant and region.
- Check how updates are secured. NIST’s IoT guidance describes secure update capabilities, including verifying that software comes from a valid source. It does not mean that every manufacturer uses the same update schedule. NIST update guidance
A long gap between releases is not proof that support has ended: some products receive updates only when a fix is needed, and others install them automatically. If the manufacturer’s pages do not settle the question, ask the responsible company in writing rather than inferring status from the date of the last visible update.
Separate device firmware from apps, cloud services, and integrator support
A functioning app, cloud connection, or basic device feature does not prove that the device’s security patches are still being issued. Support can differ across the device firmware, mobile app, cloud service, and software supplied by an integrator. Each may have a different update schedule or responsible party. ETSI and NIST guidance recognize that support for an IoT solution may involve a manufacturer, an integrator, or other entities. ETSI guidance and NIST guidance

Check which components the published commitment covers, and who owns each commitment. If a productized IoT solution was installed or managed by an integrator, do not assume the hardware manufacturer is the only source of support information.
Ask the manufacturer or integrator for a definite answer
If the published policy and update records leave uncertainty, send a written question with the exact model and revision. Ask:

When critical patches are no longer supplied, newly discovered weaknesses can increase the risk of keeping the device in service. NIST advises considering the end-of-support impact; replacement with a supported model is the clearest option when practical. NIST manufacturer information guidance

If you cannot replace the device immediately, ask your security or network administrator about documented ways to reduce its exposure. Any such mitigation is a temporary risk-reduction measure, not a substitute for renewed vendor patches. A generic security product cannot restore manufacturer firmware support.
Use update support as a buying criterion
When comparing replacement devices, look beyond whether the manufacturer says updates are available. Compare the published minimum security-update period and end date; how updates are delivered; which organization is responsible; whether the commitment covers firmware, the companion app, and cloud service; how advisories are published; and what functions remain after support ends. These details help distinguish continued operation from continued security maintenance. ETSI guidance, NIST guidance, and NIST update guidance
