If a headset mic is picking up room sounds, turn on your calling app’s noise suppression. If other people hear their own voices repeated, check which microphone and speakers are active, lower speaker volume, and check echo cancellation. These are different problems, so identify which one you have before changing settings.
1. Confirm the microphone and speakers your call is using
A call can use your laptop’s microphone or speakers even when a headset is connected. In the meeting app, select the headset as both the microphone and speaker, then test the call. Also check that no other computer or phone in the room has an open microphone and speaker connected to the same meeting.
In Microsoft Teams
- Open Settings and more > Settings > Devices.
- Choose the headset in the microphone and speaker selectors. Review the microphone sensitivity setting if available.
- Select Make a test call where available, and listen for noise or echo.
Teams’ labels and settings locations may vary by platform or version. Its device settings are documented at Microsoft’s device-settings guide.
2. Work out whether it is background noise or echo
Listeners hear room sounds
Fans, paper rustling, doors, or nearby conversation are background noise. Try the app’s noise suppression or voice-isolation control. In Teams, noise suppression offers levels including Background noise only. Voice isolation filters surrounding sound and other speakers; it uses a voice profile, which Teams’ settings page says is required when you are not using a headset. See Microsoft’s voice-isolation guidance.

Listeners hear their own voices repeated
That is echo, not ordinary room noise. Audio may be picked up and returned through an active device, or echo cancellation may not be working properly. Zoom lists multiple active devices in one room, nearby or loud speakers, echo-cancellation failure, and a bad microphone among possible causes. Check that only the intended call devices are active, move speakers away from microphones where possible, and reduce speaker volume. See Zoom’s echo troubleshooting guide.
3. Adjust the setting that matches the problem
For background sounds, enable or raise noise suppression in the meeting app. For echo, verify audio routing and check the app’s echo-cancellation settings. Zoom says it applies noise suppression and echo cancellation by default, and provides advanced audio controls for software echo cancellation and Windows signal processing. Change one control at a time, then make another test call so you can tell what helped.

Zoom cautions that changing Windows audio settings may affect other software using the same microphone or speakers. If a setting makes things worse, restore its previous value. Zoom’s options are described in its advanced audio settings guide.
4. Check the physical setup
- Turn down loud speakers and avoid placing a speaker close to a microphone.
- Do not join the same meeting from multiple devices in one room with their microphones and speakers active. Zoom notes that participants using both computer and telephone audio can also cause echo.
- If room speakers are contributing to the problem, use a headset or earset with an attached microphone. A WHO-hosted Zoom best-practices document recommends this setup, but does not endorse a specific model: Zoom best practices.
Headphone playback noise cancellation and microphone noise suppression are different features. A headset advertised as noise-cancelling does not necessarily filter sounds captured by its microphone.

5. Reconnect or test another microphone
If the correct devices are selected and the relevant processing controls do not help, unplug and reconnect the headset, then test again. If possible, try another microphone or headset to determine whether the problem follows the device. For voice-isolation problems, Microsoft also recommends reconnecting or replacing the microphone and restarting or updating Teams; see its troubleshooting guidance.
