Neither lightweight nor heavier gaming mice are universally better. In one target-acquisition study, players were faster and more accurate with 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with a 100 g mouse; a separate study of professional gamers found no statistically significant difference between 80 g and 87 g mice. A lighter mouse is worth trying if you prioritize quick target acquisition, but weight alone cannot predict aim or comfort.

Does a lighter mouse improve aim?

It may help in some aiming tasks, but the evidence does not show that every player will aim better with the lightest mouse.

One target-acquisition study favored three weights over 100 g

Conroy, Toth, and Campbell’s 2022 study in Applied Ergonomics had 72 video-game players perform an FPS-style target-acquisition task using mice weighing 50 g, 60 g, 90 g, and 100 g. Participants were 4% faster and 9% more accurate with the 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with the 100 g mouse (study record).

That result does not establish that 50 g is better than 60 g or 90 g: the reported advantage was for those three weights compared with 100 g. The task also represents one kind of aiming, not every game, match, or play style.

A professional-player study found no significant weight difference

Wang and colleagues’ 2023 study compared 80 g and 87 g mice among 16 professional gamers. It found no statistically significant difference between the weights. The authors’ reported conclusion was: “No statistically significant differences between mouse weight were found” (Berkeley publication record; study record).

The study also varied wired and wireless connections. Its connection-related findings should not be mistaken for evidence of a weight effect.

Is a heavier gaming mouse more comfortable?

Not necessarily. The cited studies do not establish how weight affects long-term comfort, and neither identifies a weight that suits every hand or grip. A mouse’s shape and hand fit, your grip style and control preferences, and the length and type of session are all practical considerations alongside mass. Those factors are not individually quantified by these studies.

Very low mass can feel less controlled to some players; others may prefer it, particularly when making repeated large flicks. A heavier mouse can be a valid preference if it feels steadier or more comfortable to you. These are reasons to compare options, not guarantees about performance or fatigue.

How to choose a mouse weight for FPS

  1. Start with your priority. If target-acquisition speed is important, trying a lighter mouse is reasonable given the results in the 2022 task. Treat it as an experiment, not a promised aim upgrade.
  2. Compare similar mice where possible. Keep shape and sensor setup similar so differences you notice are less likely to come from several changes at once. This is practical advice, not a tested protocol from the studies.
  3. Consider how you aim. Think about whether you make repeated large flicks or rely more on controlled tracking, and whether your sensitivity and grip make a particular weight feel manageable.
  4. Judge fit and control during your own sessions. If possible, try a mouse for the kinds of sessions you actually play. The available studies do not establish a universal long-term comfort or injury-prevention result.
  5. Check the exact model’s listed weight. Names within a product family can cover different weights and connection types; confirm the wired or wireless version before comparing.

What the evidence does—and does not—settle

  • The 2022 target-acquisition study found a performance advantage for 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice over a 100 g mouse in its task; it did not identify a single best weight among the three.
  • The 2023 professional-player study found no statistically significant difference between 80 g and 87 g mice in a sample of 16 players.
  • Neither study establishes the best weight for every player, game genre, sensitivity, hand, grip, or long-term comfort. The findings also do not show that a lighter mouse prevents fatigue or injury.
