A data center technician typically works closest to physical computing equipment, while a network technician typically focuses on connectivity, network devices, and resolving access or performance problems. The jobs overlap, but titles vary by employer. For pay, the clearest national proxy for network technician work is O*NET’s 2025 median of $76,220 for Computer Network Support Specialists; the official sources reviewed do not provide a separate current median for data center technicians.
What does a data center technician do?
Data center technicians commonly install or replace hardware, check equipment, troubleshoot physical problems, and record assets or completed work. Their work takes place in a data center, where many servers and related systems are housed and maintained. Some positions also include facility systems or other operational duties, so the job posting—not the title alone—is the best guide to the actual work.
This is a practical role description, not a standardized government occupational definition: the reviewed U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and O*NET sources do not establish a distinct occupational profile for the exact title “data center technician.”
What does a network technician do?
O*NET lists “Network Technician” among reported job titles for Computer Network Support Specialists (occupation 15-1231.00). The occupation covers analyzing, testing, troubleshooting, and evaluating local and wide area networks, cloud and server systems, and other data communications networks, as well as maintaining them to reduce interruptions. Its tasks include diagnosing network problems with software and equipment, configuring network devices, resolving connectivity issues, installing or repairing cables—including fiber—and documenting support work. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Network technicians therefore tend to work closer to connectivity and network troubleshooting than to routine physical server replacement, although an individual position may include both. Network and computer systems administrators are a related but generally broader occupational category: BLS describes their work as installing, configuring, and maintaining networks and systems, including servers, security, performance, upgrades, and repairs. Administrators often focus on infrastructure such as routers, switches, and cables; the scope may be more senior or administrative, but employer titles and duties vary. How do the jobs compare?
| Factor | Data center technician | Network technician |
|---|---|---|
| Typical focus | Physical computing equipment, hardware checks and replacement, and operational work in a data center. | Network connectivity, network devices, troubleshooting, and support for communications systems. |
| Common setting | Data center floor or equipment area; some roles may also cover facility operations. | May work with network equipment and cables in an office or other workplace; related telecom installation and repair roles can involve central offices, customer sites, or outdoor infrastructure. |
| Work mix | Often more physical equipment handling and equipment checks. | Often more diagnostic testing, network configuration, connectivity support, and documentation. |
| Role boundary | No distinct standardized occupational profile for this exact title is established in the reviewed BLS and O*NET sources. | O*NET reports this title under Computer Network Support Specialists; actual duties still depend on the employer. |
Both roles can require careful troubleshooting, familiarity with equipment, accurate documentation, and clear communication. A posting’s balance of physical work, network configuration, monitoring, user support, and shifts is more informative than a title comparison by itself.

Which job pays more?
There is no sound exact-title national wage comparison for these two jobs in the reviewed official sources. O*NET’s 2025 U.S. median annual wage of $76,220 applies to Computer Network Support Specialists (15-1231.00), the occupation that lists Network Technician as a reported title. It is a proxy for some network technician jobs, not a salary estimate for every worker with that title.
| Named occupation | Median annual wage | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Network Support Specialists (15-1231.00) | $76,220; O*NET, 2025, U.S. | Useful proxy for some network technician roles; not an exact-title estimate. O*NET occupation profile |
| Network and Computer Systems Administrators | $99,130; BLS, May 2025, U.S. | Adjacent, generally broader administrative work—not the direct pay figure for network technicians. BLS occupation profile |
| Telecommunications Technicians | $66,200; BLS, May 2025, U.S. | Adjacent comparison spanning telecom equipment and line installation and repair; not a substitute for a network technician estimate. BLS occupation profile |
| Data center technicians | Not stated as a distinct current median in the reviewed official sources. | No separate comparable exact-title figure is established here. |
BLS says its Occupational Outlook Handbook median wage figures come from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. These national medians are not cost-of-living adjusted and do not predict an individual offer. Local wages and total compensation can differ with location, employer, experience, role scope, shifts, overtime, and any shift differential. Compare postings for the same location and responsibilities, and use a local wage tool where available; do not treat the administrator or telecommunications figure as the data center technician wage. Do I need a degree or certifications?
Requirements depend on the employer and the level of responsibility. BLS says network support specialists typically need an associate’s degree, though a high school diploma plus relevant IT certifications may qualify some applicants; some employers prefer a bachelor’s degree. For user support specialists, computer knowledge may be sufficient and a college degree is not necessarily required. By contrast, BLS says a bachelor’s degree is typical for network and computer systems administrators, while some employers accept a postsecondary certificate or associate degree. These are common patterns, not universal entry rules. BLS: Computer Support Specialists BLS: Network and Computer Systems Administrators
For network support, useful preparation includes networking fundamentals, diagnostic troubleshooting, familiarity with devices and cables, careful interpretation of test results, documentation, security awareness, and clear communication. BLS identifies analytical, communication, creative, multitasking, problem-solving, and technical skills as important for administrators; that does not mean every technician role requires programming or administrator-level design responsibilities. Hands-on practice can help make troubleshooting concrete. For example, learning to test an Ethernet cable can support basic familiarity with network cabling; a cable tester is an optional practice tool, not a requirement for either career.

“Hands-on” can mean handling hardware or physically working on cables, or it can mean actively diagnosing and configuring a live network. Data center technician work is often more physically centered on equipment. Network technician work can also be hands-on—O*NET includes cable installation or repair and configuring network equipment—but may involve more diagnostic tools, connectivity investigation, and support documentation. Check whether a posting emphasizes hardware swaps, cabling, configuration, monitoring, or user support to see which kind of hands-on work it offers.
