Facilities technicians maintain the electrical and mechanical infrastructure that keeps a data center operating; a similarly titled IT technician role may instead focus on servers, networks, storage, and cabling. Prepare for the job described, not a supposedly universal interview script.
First, confirm which kind of technician role it is
“Data center technician” can mean facilities work or IT hardware operations. Microsoft postings, for example, include both critical-environment roles and separate jobs focused on server, network, storage, and cabling tasks. Read the specific requisition and identify its primary track before you study: Microsoft Careers.
For a facilities or critical-environment position, expect the work to center on safe operation and maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems. Employer descriptions include inspections, preventive and reactive maintenance, alarm monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response, vendor coordination, maintenance records, and shift handovers. The balance varies by site and specialty. Amazon’s UK listing, for instance, names power distribution, generators, UPS systems, cooling infrastructure, and failover testing among its responsibilities: Amazon.jobs: Data Centre Critical Facilities Technician.
Use the requisition to decide what to study
Mark each named system, task, qualification, safety responsibility, shift expectation, and reporting duty. Then prioritize the equipment the employer actually lists. Postings can cover a broad range: Google’s facilities electrical listing includes power supply, generators, UPS, electrical distribution, controls, and cooling, while NTT’s Data Center Technician L2 listing spans electrical, mechanical, and fire/life-safety systems. Those examples are not a checklist every vacancy requires; use the live requisition as your guide.

| What the posting emphasizes | Review before the interview |
|---|---|
| Electrical or power systems | Utility supply, transformers, switchgear, UPS, generators, ATS/STS, and PDUs; be ready to explain the purpose of each system named in the vacancy. |
| Mechanical or cooling systems | HVAC, chillers, pumps, CRAC/CRAH equipment, chilled-water systems, airflow, and controls, focusing on the equipment the posting names. |
| Blended critical-environment work | Prepare a basic explanation of both the electrical power path and cooling systems, then give extra attention to the specialty highlighted in the duties. |

Be ready to explain safe troubleshooting
A strong troubleshooting explanation shows how you work methodically without exceeding your authority. Describe how you would:

- Vehicle Inspections Handbook provides step-by-step information CMV drivers need to conduct successful pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections, so they can avoid breakdowns, citations, fines, repair bills, and crashes.
- Information is presented graphically within the vehicle safety handbook so that it's easy to find, with call-outs that address real-life situations drivers may experience during inspections.
- Vehicle inspection book features checklists that drivers can use to ensure successful vehicle inspections.
- Major topics covered include: The importance of vehicle inspections; Key regulations; Preparing for inspections; The inspection process; Vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs); Common inspection violations; and more!
- Softbound handbook measures 5.25" x 8.25", has 76 pages, and is written in English. Copyright 2020.
- Recognize and clearly describe the abnormal condition, including any alarm or symptoms observed.
- Check authorized monitoring and relevant equipment status using the methods available to you.
- Follow the approved procedure and any required permit or safety controls before acting.
- Communicate with the appropriate colleagues and escalate when the condition, risk, or your authority requires it.
- Work to preserve service only within your training, authorization, and site procedure.
- Record what happened, what actions were taken, what remains unresolved, and what the next shift needs to know.
Amazon’s UK job description puts the safety expectation plainly: “Follow permit-to-work and safety procedures for all maintenance and operational activities.” This is a job-duty statement, not a guarantee that every employer uses the same procedure or wording.
Practice with realistic prompts, not a memorized script
A career guide offers these as sample prompts: “Walk me through how you troubleshoot a problem you have not seen before”; “Tell me about a time you followed a procedure you disagreed with”; “How do you document work?”; “What would you do if you found something unsafe mid-task?”; and “How do you handle being escorted, or escorting someone?” They are useful practice, not verified questions asked by every employer: Data Center Knowledge careers coverage.

You can also develop practice scenarios from the vacancy’s listed duties. For example, explain the purpose of a UPS during a power interruption, what authorized information you would check when a facility alarm appears, how you would respond if a planned maintenance step did not match site conditions, or how you would document an incomplete task for the next shift. Treat these as exercises in clear reasoning and safe boundaries, not predictions of exact interview questions.
Prepare examples that show how you work
Choose truthful examples from work, training, or other relevant experience. For each one, explain the situation, the steps you personally took, the result, and what you recorded or communicated. Aim to have examples involving:

- Troubleshooting an unfamiliar or recurring problem.
- Completing planned maintenance or following a detailed procedure.
- Identifying a hazard and responding safely.
- Working with a vendor, colleague, or another shift.
- Responding to an incident and communicating status.
- Giving a clear handover, including outstanding work and risks.
If you have not operated a particular system, say so. Explain what adjacent experience you do have and how you would learn under supervision. Do not imply hands-on competence with equipment you have not used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the safety and tools expected
Employers describe safety procedures, monitoring, incident response, documentation, and escalation as part of critical-facilities work. A Google facilities electrical listing also refers to meters and diagnostic equipment. That makes familiarity with the role of a digital multimeter potentially relevant if the vacancy calls for it; it does not make buying one a requirement. Do not practice on live or unfamiliar plant, and use any equipment only within your training and authorization.

Ask questions that clarify the actual job
Use the conversation to understand how this site organizes the work. Useful questions include:
- How is the role divided between electrical, mechanical, and other specialties?
- How much time is spent monitoring and operating systems versus hands-on maintenance?
- What training is provided before technicians work on site equipment?
- What is the shift rotation, and how are handovers handled?
- What is the escalation path for alarms or unsafe conditions?
- Who approves operating procedures and permits for maintenance?
Prioritize the duties, not broad popularity claims
Data Center JobHub reported a count across 1,293 live postings dated 31 August 2026: troubleshooting appeared in 574 postings, documentation in 523, teamwork in 506, UPS/generator/switchgear knowledge in 344, attention to detail in 226, CRAC/chiller plant in 204, and customer service in 184. These are counts from that publisher’s snapshot, not an independently validated labor-market statistic or a prediction of what a particular interviewer will ask. Your requisition is more useful for deciding what to prepare.
