Depending on the malware, that access may enable remote commands, credential theft, cryptocurrency mining, infection of other devices, or participation in a denial-of-service botnet. These are possible outcomes, not a checklist of what every backdoor does.
What a Linux backdoor means on an IoT device
Linux is the operating system running on many routers, cameras, and other connected devices. A backdoor is an unauthorized way into a device that can preserve access or make it possible to return after an initial compromise. The term describes the result, not one standard program or technique.
Attackers may first get in by guessing weak or default passwords, exploiting a software vulnerability, or using another access route. They may then change startup or boot files, create a scheduled task, or add an SSH key so malicious access or software can persist. The mechanisms vary by device and malware family.
How attackers get in and stay in
Initial access
MITRE ATT&CK documents Linux Rabbit using SSH password brute force in a campaign targeting Linux servers and IoT devices from August to October 2018. CISA describes Mirai’s use of devices with factory-default settings and hardcoded credentials. In a different example, Akamai reported command-injection attacks against discontinued GeoVision devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Persistence after access
Linux Rabbit used changes to rc.local and .bashrc to persist. MITRE’s guidance on RC scripts explains that adversaries can add a binary path or shell commands to startup files such as rc.local and rc.common, a technique suited to lightweight Unix-like and embedded systems. Other malware may alter boot-process files or add scheduled jobs.
Akamai’s January 10, 2024 report on NoaBot, a Mirai-derived campaign active since early 2023, describes a different approach: installing an SSH authorized key to enable further access, payload delivery, or spread, and using a crontab entry to run after reboot. Those are NoaBot behaviors, not standard Linux behavior.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What attackers can do with a compromised device
- Run commands or deliver additional malware. MITRE describes SPAWNCHIMERA as a command-and-control backdoor for Linux and network devices that can inject malicious components into native processes. NoaBot’s SSH-key mechanism can also support additional access and payload delivery.
- Steal credentials or other information. MITRE describes Ebury as an OpenSSH backdoor and credential stealer used against Linux servers and container hosts. It has been used to maintain a botnet, deploy other malware, and steal cryptocurrency-wallet, credential, and payment-card details. This example concerns servers and container hosts; it is not evidence that Ebury specifically targets consumer IoT devices.
- Mine cryptocurrency. MITRE identifies cryptocurrency mining as the goal of the Linux Rabbit campaign, and Akamai reported crypto-mining activity associated with NoaBot.
- Spread to other devices. NoaBot spreads over SSH. Other malware may scan for additional vulnerable devices, but propagation depends on the particular family and its capabilities.
- Join a botnet and attack other services. CISA’s 2017 NSTAC report describes Mirai exploiting poorly secured IoT devices and directing infected devices to a central control server for use in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
The consequences can reach beyond the device owner. CISA’s landscape report describes the October 2016 Dyn attack as reaching 1.2 terabits per second, the highest DDoS volume recorded at the time, and says millions of users in North America and Europe were denied internet services. This is a historical figure for that incident, not a current record.
A recent example: exploitation of discontinued GeoVision devices
On May 6, 2025, Akamai reported active exploitation of command-injection vulnerabilities CVE-2024-6047 and CVE-2024-11120 against discontinued GeoVision IoT devices. Akamai observed commands that downloaded and ran ARM-based Mirai-derived malware. The report says vendor validation tied the observed scope to retired GeoVision devices; it does not establish that all GeoVision products or Linux IoT devices are affected.

How to reduce the risk
CISA and partner agencies’ August 27, 2025 advisory recommends changing default administrative credentials, using vendor-supported patched software, upgrading unsupported devices, and isolating management services on a dedicated management network. For an IoT owner, practical steps include:
- Replace factory-set administrative passwords with unique, strong credentials.
- Install firmware and software updates from the device vendor, and enable automatic updates if the device offers them.
- Replace devices that no longer receive security updates when feasible.
- Limit remote administration to trusted networks or a dedicated management network; disable management services you do not use.
These controls lower exposure but cannot guarantee that a device is free of a backdoor. If you suspect a specific device is compromised, follow the manufacturer’s current incident guidance or consult qualified incident-response support. The right detection and recovery steps depend on the model, firmware, and malware; a factory reset is not a universal guarantee of removal.
