There is no established evidence that hypothetical Planet Nine measurably affects Earth or any of the other known planets. The idea is unconfirmed: researchers have proposed that its gravity could help explain patterns in the orbits of some small bodies far beyond Neptune, but the planet itself has not been directly observed.
What scientists mean by Planet Nine
Planet Nine is a specific hypothesis about a distant, undiscovered planet—not a confirmed member of the solar system. NASA says its existence remains theoretical and debated; the agency’s current census lists eight recognized planets and says direct evidence for another planet has not been found. NASA’s overview of hypothetical Planet X also distinguishes this specific proposal from the older, broader use of the name “Planet X.”
The hypothesis arose from models of unusual orbital patterns among some distant Kuiper Belt and trans-Neptunian objects. Researchers have proposed that a massive, remote planet’s gravity could help explain the objects’ clustered orientations, inclinations, and other orbital features. That is a possible explanation for patterns in distant small bodies, not proof that Planet Nine exists or that it has a known effect on Earth. Some researchers argue the apparent clustering could also be consistent with a random distribution. Caltech’s 2016 announcement describes the original modeling argument and notes that the object had not been directly observed.
Could Planet Nine change Earth’s orbit or pose a threat?
The sources reviewed do not establish a specific measurable perturbation to Earth, predict a change in Earth’s orbit, or assess a hazard to our planet. They focus on proposed gravitational effects on distant small bodies. That means there is no supported basis here for saying Planet Nine threatens Earth. It also does not prove that a hypothetical planet has exactly zero gravitational influence; these sources do not calculate that question.

What about the other known planets?
The same evidence boundary applies to the other recognized planets. The cited sources do not quantify a specific effect on any named planet, such as a change to its orbit. The proposed influence concerns distant objects beyond Neptune, and it remains a model-based explanation rather than an established finding about the known planets.
How certain are Planet Nine’s proposed size and orbit?
Because no object has been observed, estimates describe what a planet might be like if the hypothesis is correct. They depend on the models and orbital data used, so they should not be read as measured properties.

The figures differ because they come from different analyses and ways of describing a proposed orbit. They are not conflicting measurements of a known planet: the object remains hypothetical, and the parameter analysis reports model-based estimates with uncertainties.

A direct observation would be needed to establish that the proposed planet exists. Establishing an effect on Earth or another known planet would require evidence that quantifies its gravitational influence on that planet. The sources cited here do neither: they present a debated hypothesis intended to help explain distant-object orbital patterns. Until stronger evidence is available, claims of a specific planetary effect or danger go beyond what these sources establish.
