The right settings depend on the earbud model and operating system; no single EQ menu or Bluetooth codec setting works for every pair.
Start with fit and playback checks
Before changing sound settings, seat both earbuds comfortably and consistently. If one bud is loose or the seal changes as you move, the sound may seem thin or uneven. Recheck the fit before deciding that EQ is the problem.
- Play a familiar track at a comfortable volume and listen for whether the left and right sides sound balanced.
- If your earbuds have a companion app, check whether it offers an EQ or sound profile and whether the selected profile is appropriate for what you are listening to.
- If sound quality changes between apps or tracks, remember that the recording and streaming conditions can affect what you hear.
Adjust sound on iPhone
Use Headphone Accommodations with supported headphones
On iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Apple documents these controls for listed AirPods and Beats models and other specified supported headphones. You can use an audio customization flow or adjust settings manually, and choose whether they apply to media, calls, or both. The exact options depend on the connected headphones. See Apple’s supported headphone models and setup guidance.
If left and right audio levels seem uneven, use Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance to adjust the left/right balance. A balance change is different from EQ: it changes the relative level between ears, not the tonal character of the music.

Check whether your AirPods have EQ controls
Apple’s support guidance lists three-band EQ for AirPods 4 or later, AirPods Pro 2 or later, and AirPods Max 2. These are model-specific controls, not a feature to assume is available on every AirPods generation or other Bluetooth earbuds. Check the supported models and current instructions on Apple’s Headphone Accommodations page.
Know what Apple Music lossless can and cannot change
Apple says, “Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless.” Selecting lossless audio in Apple Music can affect streaming or downloads, but it does not make the Bluetooth link to wireless headphones lossless. Apple also notes that playback quality depends on track availability, network conditions, and the connected headphones or speakers. Details are in Apple’s lossless audio guidance for iPhone.

Adjust sound on Android
Start with the earbud app and device settings
Android’s sound controls vary by phone maker, Android version, and earbud model. Check the earbuds’ companion app first, then review the paired-device settings on your phone. Do not assume an EQ menu found on one Android phone is available systemwide on another.
Use Pixel Buds EQ if you have Pixel Buds
Google documents presets and a five-band custom EQ for Pixel Buds. On supported Pixel phones, the controls are available through Connected devices; on other Android devices, use the Pixel Buds app. The menu and available features apply to Pixel Buds rather than every Bluetooth earbud. Use Sound Amplifier for accessibility, not as a music EQ
Google’s Sound Amplifier is designed to filter, augment, and amplify sound as an accessibility tool. It is not a general-purpose music-enhancement setting. Google notes that some Bluetooth headphones may produce delayed or lower-quality sound with Sound Amplifier; if you encounter that, its guidance suggests trying another set of headphones or wired headphones. Should you change the Bluetooth codec?
A higher-quality codec is not a universal fix. The phone and earbuds both need to support a codec for it to be useful, and a codec choice does not guarantee that music will sound better to you. Android Developers describes Bluetooth Low Energy Audio support in Android 13, including LC3 and related use cases, but that platform documentation is not a promise that every Android phone or earbud supports every feature. Avoid forcing codec changes in Developer options as a first troubleshooting step. If your particular phone and earbuds expose codec settings, treat them as compatibility options to test—not as a guaranteed sound-quality upgrade.

If your current pair has no EQ controls that you can use, a replacement with adjustable EQ may give you more control. Before choosing one, check the factors that determine whether those controls will help in practice:

- Comfort and stable fit: a pair that sits consistently is a better starting point for judging sound.
- Accessible EQ: confirm that the model actually offers an EQ and that you can reach it through its app or supported phone settings.
- Phone compatibility: verify that the companion app and the features you want work with your iPhone or Android device. An EQ feature documented for one product family does not establish cross-platform support for every function.
- Reliable playback where you listen: check that the connection works consistently in your usual environment.
Pixel Buds are one documented example of earbuds with adjustable EQ, but Google’s instructions do not establish that their app or every feature works identically on both iPhone and Android. Check the specific model’s compatibility before buying.
