To choose a PS5 game’s default performance or graphics preference, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Select Performance Mode if you prefer smoother motion or Resolution Mode if you prefer higher graphical quality. The setting only affects games that offer those modes, and the result depends on the game.
What PS5 settings should you change?
Start with the settings that match how you play, then adjust accessibility options to address your needs. Game Presets establish defaults for supported PS5 games; they do not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution, or feature in every title.
Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, then choose your preferred Game Preset. Sony describes Performance Mode as favoring smoother motion and Resolution Mode as favoring higher graphic quality. A game must support these modes for the preference to apply, and each game implements them differently. Sony’s Game Presets guide lists the available defaults and their intended tradeoffs.
Neither option is universally best: choose based on the experience you prefer in a particular game. If the game provides its own graphics or performance setting, check its menus as well; the console preset is a preference, not a promise that every title will behave identically.

Set defaults for other game preferences
The Game Presets screen also includes defaults for supported games. Review these if you would rather not adjust them title by title:
- Difficulty: Select a preferred starting difficulty where a game offers compatible choices.
- Camera movement: Set horizontal and vertical camera preferences for first- and third-person games.
- Subtitles and audio language: Choose language preferences for titles that use these defaults.
- Online multiplayer: Set preferences for joining sessions and receiving invitations.
A game may not support or honor every preset, so check its own options if a default does not take effect.

Which accessibility settings can help?
Accessibility settings are personal: choose the controls that address your needs, and try them in the console or game context where you plan to use them. Open Settings > Accessibility to explore the options. Sony’s PS5 accessibility settings guide explains the controls and their limitations.
Remap controller buttons
To change button assignments, go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers and configure custom button assignments. Test the new layout in a game you play: remapping changes the controller input, but a game’s on-screen prompts may still reflect its usual controls.

Make text and display easier to see
Under Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound, you can adjust display and text options such as color filters, text size, bold text, high contrast, and reduced motion. Sony notes that turning on color inversion turns HDR off.
For screen magnification, enable Zoom at Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. Sony documents pressing the PS button and square button together to magnify. Zoom has limitations in some gameplay and media contexts, including limits on moving the magnified display area.

Use the screen reader, captions, or chat transcription
- Screen reader: Reads on-screen text and spoken console guidance. You can adjust voice speed, type, and volume; availability depends on the languages Sony supports.
- Closed captions: Enable captions and customize their font, color, edge, opacity, background, and window appearance. Sony describes this feature for media, so do not assume it captions all gameplay.
- Chat transcription: Provides speech-to-text and text-to-speech for voice chat. In-game chat transcription works only in games that support it, and language choices are limited.
Check Sony’s accessibility guide for the relevant language and feature details before relying on a specific option.
Make headphone audio mono
Mono audio for headphones sends the same audio to the left and right sides. This can be useful if you prefer or need the same headphone audio in both ears; enable it in the PS5 accessibility audio settings.

How do you check a game’s accessibility features?
Before relying on a game-specific accessibility option, inspect its PlayStation Store listing. From Games home, open PlayStation Store, select the game to open its hub, then press the triangle button or use the side panel to view its accessibility details. Sony’s guide to finding game accessibility features describes this route. A listing can help you check what a title offers, but it does not mean every feature is available in every mode or situation.
Do you need a special display for PS5 performance settings?
No special display is required to change Game Presets or accessibility settings. A compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR TV or PC monitor matters only if you want to use Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) with compatible PS5 games. Sony says results vary by display and game. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is also limited to compatible HDMI 2.1 TVs, and PS5 can output 1440p to compatible monitors and TVs. Check Sony’s 1440p and VRR support information against your display before relying on those features.
