What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No: OpenAI says ChatGPT ads do not train models or influence the answers ChatGPT gives. But ad selection is a separate kind of personalization: if personalized ads are enabled, signals from your current conversation and broader ChatGPT activity may help choose which ads you see. Whether eligible conversations can be used to improve models is governed by separate data controls and account rules.
Do ads influence ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says no. Its Ads in ChatGPT help page says ads run on systems separate from the chat model, and advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT’s responses. This is OpenAI’s description of its product; it is not an independent audit of the systems.
That distinction matters: an ad may be selected using conversation-related signals without becoming part of the model’s answer-generation process. OpenAI describes ad matching and model improvement as separate uses of data.
Can ChatGPT use conversations to personalize ads?
Yes, when personalized ads are enabled and the feature is available. OpenAI says ad selection may use signals from the current chat thread, including personalized model responses; past chats and memory; and interactions with ads, such as engaging with or hiding one.

Turning off ad personalization does not necessarily mean every ad is unrelated to what you are discussing. OpenAI says ads may still be contextual to the current chat thread. Check the Ad Controls available in your account for the options currently offered.
OpenAI says these signals remain within ChatGPT. Advertisers do not receive chat histories, memories, names, email addresses, precise location, IP addresses, or sensitive information such as health, mental-health, or political topics. They receive aggregated reporting, such as views and clicks. These are OpenAI’s stated practices, not independently verified findings.

Are conversations used to train or improve models?
That is a separate question from ad personalization. For individual ChatGPT services, OpenAI says eligible content may be used to improve models unless you opt out. Its model-development explanation says training data is used to build capabilities such as prediction, reasoning, and problem-solving—not to build individual profiles or personalize ads. OpenAI also notes that training data may incidentally contain personal information and describes safeguards.
For individual accounts, turning off Improve the model for everyone stops new conversations from being used for model improvement under the documented policy. OpenAI says that if you later submit feedback on a conversation, the conversation associated with that feedback may still be used to improve models. Turning the setting off does not remove chats from your history.

OpenAI says content in Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. API content is also excluded by default, although API organizations can enable data sharing. Workspace or organizational policies may affect the controls available to you.
How ad personalization, memory, and model improvement differ
| Feature | Purpose | What OpenAI says it can use | Relevant control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad personalization | Select ads that may be relevant | When enabled, current chat, past chats, memory, and ad interactions | Ad Controls, where available |
| Memory | Personalize future responses | Details ChatGPT has saved as memory, subject to memory settings | Memory settings; Temporary Chat choices |
| Model improvement | Improve OpenAI models | Eligible content, depending on service type, settings, and feedback | Improve the model for everyone; workspace or API data settings |
OpenAI describes memory controls and model-training controls as separate settings. Disabling one does not automatically disable the others.

How to change the relevant settings
Stop new individual-account chats from being used for model improvement
- Open Settings → Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
New conversations may still appear in your chat history. The feedback exception described above also applies.
Manage ad personalization
- Open Settings → Ad Controls, if the control is available for your account and region.
- Turn off personalized ads if you do not want broader ChatGPT activity used to select ads.
- Use the available controls to dismiss an ad, see why it appeared, or clear ads data.
OpenAI says cleared ads data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal.

Use Temporary Chat
Choose whether the Temporary Chat should be personalized when you start it. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, are not used to improve models while temporary, and do not show ads. They may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you choose to personalize the temporary chat, existing memories may still be used.

OpenAI’s current Help Center page says ads may appear for Free and Go users. It lists Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts as ad-free; accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 and Temporary Chats also do not receive ads. OpenAI describes a free no-ads option with additional usage limits and identifies Plus or Pro as ad-free plans.
Availability varies by region and may change. OpenAI announced that ad testing began in the United States on February 9, 2026; an update published August 11, 2026, reported launches in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Check the current Help Center page and the controls shown in your account rather than assuming the rollout or plan eligibility is permanent. See OpenAI’s ads announcement for its rollout updates.
What to remember
- OpenAI says ads neither train the model nor influence ChatGPT’s answers.
- Personalized ad selection may use current-chat and broader ChatGPT signals when that feature is on.
- Model improvement, response memory, and ad personalization have different purposes and controls.
- For individual accounts, the model-improvement opt-out applies to new conversations, with a documented exception when you submit feedback.
For details on the settings and exceptions, see OpenAI’s data controls, its explanation of how data is used to improve model performance, and its account of how ChatGPT and its foundation models are developed.
