For basic comment cleanup, start with TikTok’s built-in filters. They can catch spam, potentially offensive comments, and chosen keywords, with a review queue for comments that are hidden. For a busy TikTok LIVE, add trusted human moderators when context and quick judgment matter. Use a third-party bot only when its specific moderation capability, TikTok authorization, and handling of mistakes are verified: a chatbot that sends automated replies is not necessarily an AI moderation bot.
What TikTok’s built-in filters can do
For comments on posts, TikTok offers controls to filter spam, comments containing keywords you choose, and potentially inappropriate or offensive comments through Creator Care Mode. You can review filtered comments and approve or delete them. An optional setting hides all comments until you approve them, but TikTok says this feature is not available to everyone. Check the controls available on your account in TikTok’s Manage comments guide.
These controls are a practical first choice when they cover the problems you face and you can keep up with the review queue. Keyword filters are straightforward to configure, but they can miss wording you did not anticipate or hide acceptable comments that happen to contain a selected word.
What changes during TikTok LIVE
LIVE moderation includes more than a word list. TikTok documents comment filtering and keyword blocking, as well as actions to report, mute, or block viewers. A creator can appoint moderators and grant them permission to manage comments. TikTok’s LIVE Safety Guide, updated June 3, 2025, says hosts and moderators can add up to 500 words to the keyword list during a LIVE, and creators can appoint up to 30 moderators per LIVE. Those are capacity limits, not measures of accuracy or effectiveness. Availability and the tools shown may depend on eligibility or app-specific features. See TikTok’s LIVE moderation help page for its documented controls.

Visibility matters: filters and blocks can make comments invisible to the creator, a moderator, or a viewer. Check what each person in your moderation setup can actually see, and give moderators a way to review questionable removals. TikTok discusses visibility issues in its LIVE troubleshooting guidance.
What an “AI moderation bot” may—and may not—mean
A product described as a chatbot may automate viewer interactions without detecting abuse. For example, TikFinity’s chatbot page describes viewer commands and automated replies for TikTok LIVE, with setup through its desktop app or a browser-extension configuration. That documentation does not establish that it classifies or removes harmful comments. Treat it as a LIVE interaction chatbot unless the vendor documents and verifies moderation functions separately.
TikTok’s official Accounts API is another distinct case. Its Accounts API overview describes comment moderation for owned Business and Personal Accounts as part of managing an account’s organic presence. Access is subject to scopes and permitted-use requirements. TikTok’s documentation says that, effective March 20, 2026, new apps or requests to increase scopes involving TikTok Accounts permission face an application process, and TikTok can revoke access for misuse. An official API route does not establish that a particular consumer bot is authorized, supports LIVE moderation, or uses AI; verify the service’s authorization and exact scope.
There is also a naming distinction worth keeping clear: TikTok’s Comment Insights uses AI to summarize and categorize comment themes and questions, including sentiment-related groupings. TikTok describes it as an insights and engagement feature, not an external real-time moderation bot. Availability varies by region, and the feature has an age requirement of 18 where available. Details are in TikTok’s Comment Insights help page.
Compare the options by the work you need done
| Option | Best fit | What to verify or watch |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok post-comment filters | Spam, selected keywords, and potentially offensive comments on posts; hidden comments can be reviewed. | Whether the controls, including filter-all, are available on your account; whether the review queue is manageable. |
| TikTok LIVE controls | Filtering, keyword blocking, and viewer actions such as mute, block, or report, with creator-appointed moderators. | Which tools are available in your app and for your account; what moderators and viewers can see; how borderline cases are reviewed. |
| Human moderators | Fast decisions that depend on community context, especially in a busy LIVE. | Whether moderators are trusted, understand community norms, and have the permissions and escalation process they need. |
| Third-party automation | A specific, documented capability that native tools and available moderators do not cover. | What it actually automates, TikTok authorization and scopes, false-positive handling, logs, data retention, and current terms. |
For any option, ask whether it covers posts, LIVE, or both; when it acts; whether actions can be reviewed or reversed; and how it handles slang, irony, reclaimed terms, and multiple languages. Do not assume an AI system understands community-specific meaning without documentation and a pilot. Vendor pricing and terms are not established here, so check them directly before choosing a service.
How to choose for your community
- Start with the surface and problem. Separate post comments from LIVE chat, then identify whether the main issue is spam, recurring keywords, harassment, or fast-moving context-dependent conflict.
- Enable the relevant native controls. Use TikTok’s comment settings for posts and its LIVE filtering and account-action tools where available. Decide who will inspect hidden comments and handle appeals or mistakes.
- Add people when judgment or speed is the gap. A low-volume creator may be able to manage native filters and review alone. A busy LIVE community may benefit from trusted moderators who know its norms.
- Evaluate a bot by evidence, not its label. Confirm that it performs harmful-comment detection or removal—not just commands and replies—then check authorization, scope, response timing, reversibility, logging, retention, and policy compliance.
- Pilot narrowly if the stakes justify automation. Compare its actions with human review on a limited, representative set of comments before relying on it. Track both missed harmful comments and legitimate comments incorrectly hidden, and keep a human escalation route.
What is—and is not—known about performance
No reliable head-to-head accuracy or latency figures establish that an AI moderation bot outperforms TikTok’s filters. The documented LIVE capacities of up to 500 keyword entries and up to 30 moderators are limits, not performance results. Choose based on verified capabilities and the review workload your community can safely support, rather than an assumed accuracy advantage.
