Turn off the camera’s built-in IR night vision and any status or recording lights that appear in the image, then place the lens flush against clean glass and reduce indoor lights reflected in the pane. If the camera can no longer see the outdoor scene after its IR is off, an outdoor-rated camera mounted beyond the glass is usually the more dependable option for night monitoring.
Why a camera reflects in a window
Glass can bounce light back toward a camera. At night, the camera’s own IR LEDs may illuminate the pane, and the reflected light can create a white bloom, halo, or haze that obscures the scene. TP-Link, Logitech, Blink, and Panasonic each describe IR reflection as a cause of poor or unclear footage when a camera is used behind glass: TP-Link, Logitech, Blink, and Panasonic.
The camera may also capture reflections from indoor lights or visible status and recording LEDs. A problem that appears mainly after the camera switches to night vision is a useful clue that its IR lighting is involved, though other light sources can contribute.
How to reduce glare and reflections
- Compare day and night views. Check live footage at the time the problem occurs. If the image changes when night vision activates, start by disabling the camera’s IR night vision.
- Turn off camera lights that reflect in the pane. Look in the model’s settings for separate controls for night vision, IR LEDs, status lights, or recording lights. Not every camera allows these controls to be disabled independently. Blink specifically recommends turning off the Mini 2’s IR and recording LEDs when using it through glass; follow the instructions for your own model: Blink Support.
- Clean the glass and bring the lens close. Clean and dry the inside surface, then position the lens flush against it. Google Nest’s guidance is: “Mount the camera so that the lens is flush against the glass to reduce reflections and glare.” See Google Nest Help.
- Reduce indoor light reflected in the window. Dim or switch off room lights near the camera and check the view again in the lighting conditions that caused the issue. Avoid aiming the camera at a strong direct light source.
- Check the view for obstructions. A screen or mesh between the camera and the outdoor scene can interfere with the image and may affect motion detection. Reposition the camera or use a clear part of the pane if possible; Google’s placement guidance discusses screens and window use: Google Nest Help.
What changes when you turn off IR night vision?
Disabling the camera’s onboard IR can remove the light that is bouncing off the glass, but it also removes that camera’s own infrared illumination. If the outdoor area is dark, the resulting image may be too dim to use. A separately mounted exterior light or a compatible external IR illuminator may help, but compatibility depends on the camera and accessory. The cited guidance does not establish a universal illuminator recommendation; check the camera maker’s specifications before using one.

Window placement can also restrict framing, reduce usable night vision, and make motion detection less dependable. Blink notes a motion-detection caveat for its Mini 2 glass setup: Blink Support. Test the live view and detection behavior in the actual position rather than assuming a clear image guarantees reliable alerts.
When an outdoor camera is the better choice
If you need dependable outdoor footage at night, mounting an outdoor-rated camera outside the glass avoids placing a reflective pane between the camera and the scene. Google advises using an outdoor camera when the goal is to record an outdoor space: Google Nest Help. Before choosing this route, check that the camera is rated for the weather where it will be installed and plan for power and cable routing.

Choosing a camera for window use
A camera designed for window mounting may avoid some reflection problems by omitting lights that would otherwise bounce off the pane. Wyze says its Window Cam removes IR lights and the spotlight to reduce glare and reflections. That is the maker’s description of its design, not an independent comparative test; check the current specifications and availability for your region: Wyze Window Security Camera.
| Setup | What to check | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor camera behind a window | Whether IR and status or recording lights can be disabled; lens distance from the pane; field of view; motion detection; power and cable routing. | Turning off IR may leave a dark scene, while reflections, framing, or detection can remain problematic. |
| Camera designed for window use | Which lights are omitted or controlled; mounting method; field of view; motion detection; current specifications and regional availability. | Design claims do not establish how it compares with other cameras in every window or lighting condition. |
| Outdoor-rated camera beyond the glass | Weather rating; night illumination; field of view; motion detection; power and cable routing. | Requires a suitable exterior mounting location and an outdoor installation. |
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s 2025 Video Security Systems handbook discusses polarizing filters as a way to reduce or eliminate reflections and glare from shiny surfaces such as glass. It does not establish a particular consumer camera filter as a reliable fix for a camera filming through a window, so treat that as an optical concept rather than a proven purchase recommendation.
