Alexa may speak or make a sound without a new command because an Echo misheard nearby audio, stayed open for a follow-up request, ran a routine or reminder, delivered an announcement or notification, or used a brief tone instead of a spoken response. Check Alexa History and the device’s configured features to narrow down the cause; an unexpected sound alone does not prove the device is faulty.
First, work out what kind of event occurred
Note the time, which device made the sound, and whether it was speech, a short tone, or a light on the device. These clues help direct the checks below: a single event differs from one that repeats, and a sound from another Echo in the household may be an Announcement rather than a response to your device.
Check what Alexa heard
In the Alexa app, go to More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History. On a supported Echo Show, you can also review history on the device. Find the event by time and compare its recording, transcript, and Alexa’s response. A similar-sounding word or audio from a television or radio can be mistaken for the wake word; Amazon describes this as a “false wake.” The history may also show that Alexa misunderstood what someone said. Echo devices use wake-word detection and provide a visual or audible indicator when audio is being streamed to the cloud. On supported devices, Follow-Up Mode allows additional requests without repeating the wake word. Amazon notes that nearby speech can sometimes be mistaken for a follow-up request. These behaviors can explain an unexpected response, but they do not mean every unexplained sound was a wake or that the device records continuously. Look for a routine or reminder that ran on its own
Routines
In the Alexa app, open More > Routines. Look for routines triggered by a time, sound, presence detection, an alarm, or a voice phrase. Then inspect the actions for spoken content, briefings, skills, or music playback. A routine can produce audio when no one gives a new command at that moment. Amazon: Create an Alexa Routine
Reminders
Ask, “What are my reminders?” or review reminders in the Alexa app. A reminder can be announced when due, and a follow-up reminder can continue hourly or daily until you confirm completion. Check whether a reminder is recurring or configured to follow up. Amazon: Set and manage reminders

Check for Announcements and notifications
Announcements from another device
An Announcement is a household broadcast to supported Alexa-enabled devices. If the voice or sound seems to come from a different Echo, check whether someone sent an Announcement. To disable Announcements on one device, Amazon’s app instructions are Devices > All Devices > [device] > Settings > Communications > Announcements. Menu wording can vary. Notifications and messages
A flashing yellow light on an Echo indicates a notification or message, according to Amazon. Ask, “What notifications do I have?” or “What messages do I have?” and review notification settings in the app. Amazon: Alexa notifications and indicators

If the sound is a short tone, check Brief Mode
Brief Mode reduces spoken responses and may use a short sound instead of a voice reply. To restore fuller spoken responses, open More > Settings > Voice Responses > Brief Mode in the Alexa app and turn Brief Mode off. Amazon: Turn Brief Mode on or off
Use sound controls only for the interruptions they cover
On Echo devices with a screen, alarm, notification, and media sound controls are grouped under Notifications & Sounds; Do Not Disturb is available there as well. Settings and menu names vary by model and software version. Do Not Disturb may reduce interruptions, but it is not a general fix for routines, reminders, or every unexpected sound. When you still cannot identify the cause
Compare the event time in History with the routine and reminder schedules, then check for an Announcement or notification. If the event keeps recurring, note whether it involves the same device and whether History shows a matching request. The cause of an individual event cannot be established from the sound alone; the device’s history, model, app version, and settings matter.
