The milestones are separate: the company announced construction early works on October 1, 2026, and reported the exploration program’s completion on October 7. Neither announcement says Marathon has started producing metals, and the exploration results reported so far are preliminary soil readings rather than confirmed bedrock grades.
What Generation Mining reported from its 2026 exploration program
The company said its regional field program is complete. It included soil sampling, geological mapping and prospecting; Generation also identified historical drill core for targeted relogging and sampling. Completion refers to fieldwork, not the delivery of every assay result or confirmation of a new mineral discovery.
As of the October 7 update, Generation had received results for 909 of 1,786 soil samples—about 51%. Prospecting assay results were still pending. The samples were collected at 1,786 stations across approximately 10 kilometres of strike length. Generation said the soil samples were analyzed using aqua-regia partial digestion and ICP methods, with quality-control materials included. Generation Mining’s October 7 exploration update identifies Chanelle Boucher, P.Geo., Senior Geologist of Generation PGM Inc., as the Qualified Person who reviewed its scientific and technical content.
Preliminary copper readings at Four Dams and Lacobeer
Generation reported elevated copper values in preliminary soil results from the Four Dams and Lacobeer area, near the interpreted contact between the Layered Series and Marathon Series and broadly along strike from known historical copper mineralization. The company reported 12 soil samples above 300 parts per million (ppm) copper, including eight above 500 ppm; the highest reported value was 3,280 ppm.

These are surface geochemical readings, not copper grades measured in underlying bedrock. Generation explicitly cautions that soil copper concentrations reflect surficial geochemical responses and are not necessarily indicative of copper concentrations in bedrock. The figures therefore point to an area the company may investigate further; by themselves, they do not establish a deposit’s grade, size or economic potential.
Historical results are not 2026 discoveries
The same update refers to earlier exploration: a historical grab sample at Skipper graded 0.82% copper, while 2013 Four Dams drilling included intervals of 38 metres at 0.28% copper and 48 metres at 0.31% copper. These are historical results, not samples or drill holes from the 2026 program. Grab samples are selective, and the company cautions about the reliability of historical exploration data.

What “construction commences” means at Marathon
Generation’s October 1 announcement says early works had begun at the company’s 100%-owned Marathon project after it posted construction-phase financial assurance under the project’s filed Closure Plan. The announcement concerns site preparation and enabling work—not mine production. The company expected this phase to continue through the fourth quarter of 2026 and into 2027. The October 1 construction announcement identifies Clinton Swemmer, P.Eng., Vice President of Projects, as the Qualified Person who reviewed its technical content.
The early works announced by Generation include:
- Upgrades to the access road and entrance, plus clearing and grubbing.
- Early water-management structures and environmental controls and monitoring.
- Camp upgrades and expansion, temporary site offices and a temporary fuel farm.
- Initial bulk earthworks, aggregate production and temporary power.
These activities prepare the site and support later construction. Their commencement does not mean that all project facilities are complete or that commercial operations have begun.

What the company says about assurance and equipment purchases
Generation reported posting a C$6.5 million bond for construction-phase closure-plan assurance. It also said approximately C$30 million in initial payments were expected to secure approximately C$150 million in critical purchases. The planned items include mining equipment, crushing and milling equipment, flotation equipment, thickeners, plant buildings and cranes.
The company said those purchases were expected, in aggregate, to be at or below the feasibility-study budget and delivered within the baseline schedule. These are company expectations, subject to final contracts and required approvals—not confirmation that the purchases have been completed or that final costs and delivery dates are secured.

How to read Marathon’s feasibility-study figures
The October 1 release summarizes Generation’s feasibility study, effective November 1, 2024. Its economic and production figures are study estimates, not realized operating results. The stated 1.9-year payback is based on three-year trailing-average metal prices at the study’s effective date.

These projections depend on the study’s assumptions and are not evidence of actual future costs, output, profitability or schedule. Generation’s releases also identify risks including permits, financial assurance for later phases, supplier commitments and delivery, cost escalation, construction delays, commodity prices, and relationships with Indigenous communities and other stakeholders.
