Neither TerraMaster nor Synology is the better choice for every home. The four-bay TerraMaster F4-424 stands out if you want dual 2.5GbE networking and listed hardware transcoding; the four-bay Synology DS923+ is a stronger fit if you prefer Synology’s documented storage and backup tools, including SHR and Hyper Backup. Choose based on your network, media workflow, drive plans, and preferred software—not on an assumed universal advantage in reliability or ease of use.

TerraMaster F4-424 vs. Synology DS923+: the key differences

This comparison uses the specific four-bay TerraMaster F4-424 and Synology DS923+. Both offer storage management and backup-related features, but their listed hardware and software options differ. The manufacturer specifications establish what each device lists; they do not provide an independent performance or usability comparison.

Feature TerraMaster F4-424 Synology DS923+
Drive bays 4 SATA drive bays, according to TerraMaster’s product specifications. 4 bays, according to Synology’s product page.
Processor and memory Intel N95 and 8 GB DDR5, according to TerraMaster’s specifications. AMD Ryzen R1600 and 4 GB DDR4 ECC, according to Synology’s product page and DS923+ datasheet.
Built-in networking Two 2.5GbE ports, per TerraMaster’s specifications. Do not assume built-in 2.5GbE: Synology lists faster networking as an optional feature in its DS923+ datasheet.
M.2 NVMe Two M.2 NVMe slots, according to TerraMaster’s specifications. NVMe features are listed in the DS923+ datasheet; check the document for the applicable configuration and limitations.
Storage and snapshots Lists Btrfs/EXT4, TRAID and other RAID types, plus snapshots, in TerraMaster’s specifications. DSM documents Btrfs and ext4, SHR and conventional RAID options, snapshots, and storage management in its storage documentation.
Backup software Backup applications and snapshot functions are listed in TerraMaster’s specifications. Synology documents Hyper Backup and snapshot features in its backup documentation and Snapshot Replication documentation.
Hardware transcoding Lists transcoding up to 4K (4096 × 2160) at 60 FPS under its stated codec specifications; see TerraMaster’s specifications. The DS923+ datasheet identifies its Ryzen R1600 platform; that information alone does not establish blanket media transcoding or playback performance.

Which NAS is better for your home use?

Choose the TerraMaster F4-424 for its listed hardware features

The F4-424 is the more compelling fit if the two built-in 2.5GbE ports match your home network, or if your media setup needs NAS-side hardware transcoding. It also lists 8 GB DDR5 memory and two M.2 NVMe slots. These are specification-based advantages for particular workloads, not proof that every home user will see faster day-to-day performance.

Choose the Synology DS923+ for its documented DSM workflow

The DS923+ is a good fit if you value DSM’s documented storage and backup ecosystem. Synology’s materials describe SHR alongside conventional RAID options, storage management, snapshots, and Hyper Backup. The DS923+ has 4 GB DDR4 ECC memory in its product specification, and optional expansion and faster networking are detailed in its datasheet. Optional networking should not be mistaken for built-in 2.5GbE.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to decide for your network, media, and storage needs

  1. Check your network first. The F4-424 lists two 2.5GbE ports. Compare that with your router or switch, client devices, and cabling; a faster NAS port will not make the whole network faster if another link is the bottleneck. For the DS923+, verify the datasheet’s optional networking details and the cost of any needed hardware before comparing total cost.
  2. Ask whether you need transcoding. Transcoding converts media to a format or quality a playback device can use. The F4-424 lists hardware transcoding up to 4K at 60 FPS under its stated codec specifications. Actual streaming depends on the media codec, client support, software configuration, and whether transcoding is needed at all. The DS923+ processor identification is not enough to infer universal playback capability.
  3. Compare the software features you will use. Look at TOS and DSM workflows for storage management, snapshots, and backup applications. The published feature lists confirm available functions, but do not establish which interface is easier to set up or use. If ease of setup matters, evaluate the workflows and documentation for your specific tasks rather than relying on a general brand claim.
  4. Confirm drive fit and expansion. TerraMaster lists SATA HDD support for the F4-424. Synology maintains a DS923+-specific drive compatibility list and says support is limited for drives outside it. Check the exact drive model against the current list, and review each device’s expansion options before buying.
  5. Price the complete setup. Include the NAS, drives, and any optional networking or expansion hardware. Current prices and retailer bundle contents change, so check them at purchase time rather than treating a listed product-page price as a lasting comparison.

Drive planning and backups matter whichever NAS you choose

Both systems need a drive plan, and neither RAID nor snapshots are a complete backup strategy. RAID can help maintain availability after certain drive failures, while snapshots can help recover earlier file states; neither guarantees a separate copy if the NAS is damaged, stolen, or affected by a broader failure. Use the backup tools each platform lists to create a separate copy suited to your data and budget.

TerraMaster lists backup and snapshot functions for the F4-424. Synology documents Hyper Backup and snapshots for DSM. Choose a backup destination and schedule appropriate to how much data you can afford to lose and how quickly you need to restore it.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you

The published materials support a feature-based decision between these models, not a claim that one is objectively more reliable, quieter, faster in every workload, or easier to set up. TerraMaster reports 21.0 dB(A) for the F4-424 with two SATA drives or SSDs in standby, 17.3 dB(A) ambient noise, and measurement at 1 m; that manufacturer figure should not be applied to other drives or workloads. There is no comparable independent test here for noise, performance, setup, reliability, or support response.

TerraMaster published a vendor-authored comparison article on July 16, 2026; treat its comparative judgments as the company’s views, not independent findings. Product details and Synology’s drive compatibility list can change, so verify specifications and compatibility for the exact configuration before purchase.
