Astronomers look for recurring dips in a white dwarf’s brightness as an orbiting body passes in front of it. They check whether the dips repeat and study their shape, then use other observations to tell a possible intact planet from material breaking apart. Spectroscopy and infrared observations add clues about planetary debris, but do not by themselves prove that a surviving planet is present.
How does a transit reveal an orbiting body?
A transit happens when an orbiting body crosses between its star and our line of sight, briefly blocking some of the star’s light. Astronomers repeatedly measure a white dwarf’s brightness and look for dips that recur at a consistent interval. That recurrence can establish a candidate orbit; the timing and depth of the dips can also help constrain the orbit and the body’s size relative to the star.
White dwarfs are extremely compact, so a transiting object can block a substantial fraction of their light. That can make a transit conspicuous, but events may be brief and difficult to catch. The orbit must also cross our line of sight: not seeing a transit does not show that the system has no planets.
For transit detection generally, NASA explains that astronomers can calculate orbital size from the period and the star’s mass. The precision of those estimates depends on the information available for a particular system; it should not be assumed to be equally well determined for every white dwarf.

Why do astronomers study the shape of the dip?
A regular, planet-like transit is only one possible cause of a brightness dip. Dust and debris from a body being disrupted can distort the signal, so astronomers examine its shape as well as its recurrence and seek follow-up evidence.
WD 1145+017: a body breaking apart
NASA/JPL reported prominent dips in WD 1145+017 about every 4.5 hours, with the deepest reported events blocking up to 40 percent of the white dwarf’s light. The dips were not the typical symmetric, U-shaped profile expected from a simple intact-planet transit. Astronomers interpreted the irregular signal as a minor planet being torn apart, with orbiting debris contributing to the dips.

WD 1145+017 is evidence of a disrupted small body and planetary material around a white dwarf—not a confirmed intact planet. The unusual signal shows why a recurring dip must be interpreted rather than treated as proof of a stable planet on its own. NASA/JPL’s account of the WD 1145+017 observations describes the signal and its interpretation.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Spectroscopy: A spectrum reveals which chemical elements are present. Heavy elements in a white dwarf’s atmosphere can indicate that rocky material from outside the star has recently been accreted.
- Infrared observations: Dust around a white dwarf can emit heat detectable at infrared wavelengths. Such emission supports the presence of warm dusty material.
Together, atmospheric pollution and dusty disks help scientists reconstruct how remnants of planetary systems may be scattered toward a white dwarf. These are indirect clues: by themselves, they do not establish the mass or orbit of a surviving planet—or even prove that one remains in a particular system. NASA’s overview of how astronomers find and characterize exoplanets describes transit and spectroscopic methods.
Have astronomers found an intact planet around a white dwarf?
WD 1856 b is a distinct and unusual case. NASA described it as a possible intact planet closely orbiting a white dwarf, based on transit evidence found by TESS and the retired Spitzer Space Telescope in 2020. This is different from WD 1145+017, where the signal was interpreted as a disintegrating minor body and debris.

In a 2026 report, NASA said WD 1856 b transits every 34 hours and is less than 2 million miles (3 million kilometers) from its white dwarf. Webb observations were follow-up characterization: they measured the planet’s temperature and detected molecules in its atmosphere. Those results do not make the two systems equivalent examples of planet detections, nor do they show that close-in planets are common around white dwarfs. See NASA’s WD 1856 b discovery account and Webb follow-up report.

A repeated transit can reveal an orbiting object when its path crosses our line of sight, while the transit’s shape helps determine whether the signal fits an intact planet or may involve debris. Spectra and infrared emission can reveal material left by planetary systems, but they are not a census of surviving planets.

A dip can have explanations other than a planet, so recurrence, signal shape, and follow-up observations matter. Conversely, a system with no observed transit may still contain planets whose orbits do not cross our line of sight. The available examples establish that white dwarfs can have detectable planetary remnants and that a possible intact planet has been found in one unusual system; they do not establish how common such planets are.
For context on planetary remnants and the history of this field, NASA discusses white-dwarf debris in “Chapter 7: Death and New Life” and earlier evidence in “Overlooked Treasure: The First Evidence of Exoplanets.”
