Yes—many AI models, especially language models, can run on a consumer laptop or desktop without an internet connection once you have installed a compatible runtime and downloaded the model files. The computer performs each inference locally; it does not need to contact a server for every prompt. The practical limits are whether your software supports the computer, whether the model fits in available memory, and whether the speed and features suit your needs.

What “offline AI” means—and what it does not

Offline use applies to inference: the step where a model processes your prompt and generates a response. Setup usually requires internet access to download the runtime and model weights. Online model catalogs, cloud-hosted models, and web search also require connectivity. LM Studio says it can operate entirely offline once model files are available (LM Studio System Requirements; LM Studio documentation).

Running an inference locally does not by itself prove that every part of an application is offline or private. Features that call cloud services, extensions, web tools, or network APIs may still communicate externally. Ollama documents a local-only setting that disables its cloud features, including cloud models and web search; check the settings for the particular runtime you use (Ollama FAQ).

What consumer hardware can run a model?

“Consumer chips” can mean a laptop or desktop CPU, integrated graphics, a consumer discrete GPU, or Apple Silicon with unified memory. There is no single hardware requirement for all local AI: support depends on the runtime, operating system, model build, and workload. The requirements below are LM Studio’s documented compatibility guidance, not universal requirements for every package.

Apple Silicon Macs

LM Studio lists Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3, and M4 Macs running macOS 14 or newer. It recommends 16GB or more of RAM; its documentation says an 8GB Mac may still run smaller models with modest context sizes. Intel-based Macs are not supported by LM Studio (LM Studio System Requirements, accessed October 7, 2026).

Windows and Linux computers

LM Studio lists Windows x64 and ARM support; its x64 version requires AVX2. It recommends at least 16GB of RAM and 4GB of dedicated VRAM for Windows. For Linux, it lists x64 and ARM64 support, AppImage distribution, Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, and AVX2 support on x64. These are LM Studio-specific details; other runtimes may support different systems or have different prerequisites (LM Studio System Requirements, accessed October 7, 2026).

CPUs, integrated graphics, and GPUs

A discrete GPU is not always required. Ollama documents model placement using 100% GPU, 100% CPU, or a split between CPU and GPU. CPU or split placement can allow a model to load when it does not fit in dedicated GPU memory, though performance depends on the hardware and workload; the cited documentation does not establish a universal speed difference (Ollama FAQ).

For RTX graphics cards, NVIDIA gives these example starting points: 6–8GB of GPU memory for Qwen 3.5 4B, 12–16GB for Qwen 3.5 9B or Gemma 4 12B, and 24GB or more for Qwen 3.6 27B. These are NVIDIA’s vendor suggestions, not guarantees that every quantization, context length, or workload will fit or perform well (NVIDIA, “How to Get Started With Large Language Models on NVIDIA RTX PCs,” accessed October 7, 2026).

Do not assume every integrated GPU or NPU is compatible just because it is in a consumer computer. Support is runtime-specific; the cited compatibility guidance does not establish a universal NPU support list.

Why memory matters more than the model’s parameter count alone

Model weights need memory, but they are not the only demand. The context—the prompt, conversation history, tool output, and documents included with a request—also consumes memory. Running multiple requests at once adds further demand. Ollama notes that memory requirements scale with parallel requests and context length (Ollama FAQ).

Quantization stores weights at lower precision to reduce memory needs and can make a model fit on more modest hardware. It may also reduce answer quality, especially when quantization is aggressive. A model’s parameter count alone therefore cannot tell you whether a particular build will fit: check the actual model file, quantization, context length, and memory available to the runtime (NVIDIA RTX guide).

When comparing setups, use these factors rather than relying on a GPU label or a single advertised model size:

How to set up local AI for offline use

  1. Check your computer: note its operating system, processor family, installed RAM or unified memory, and dedicated GPU memory if present.
  2. Choose a compatible runtime: examples include LM Studio and Ollama; the LM Studio documentation describes local inference through llama.cpp on Mac, Windows, and Linux, and MLX on Apple Silicon. Check each runtime’s current system requirements before installing it (LM Studio System Requirements; LM Studio documentation; Ollama FAQ).
  3. Download the model while online: obtain the model weights before disconnecting. For LM Studio, its documentation specifically says to get model files first (LM Studio System Requirements).
  4. Select a build that fits: match the model and quantization to available memory and the context length you expect to use. Vendor model-to-memory examples are starting points, not a promise that a setup will work for every task.
  5. Try your intended workload: load the model and test the prompts, context size, and document or tool workflow you expect to use. Check both whether it runs and whether its response time is acceptable; performance varies by hardware and configuration.
  6. Make the offline boundary explicit: disconnect to verify local inference if needed, disable cloud features where the runtime provides that option, and avoid web search or other features that call external services. Ollama documents a local-only setting; LM Studio documents offline operation once model files are present (Ollama FAQ; LM Studio System Requirements).

When a GPU upgrade is—and is not—necessary

A discrete GPU can provide useful dedicated memory for supported workloads, and NVIDIA’s model examples show how its RTX memory bands map to suggested model starting points. But GPU ownership is not a prerequisite for every local model: CPU execution, CPU/GPU split placement, and Apple Silicon systems are also possible paths. Consider an upgrade only after identifying a model and workload that exceed your current setup’s memory or responsiveness needs. The cited guidance does not support a one-size-fits-all card recommendation; fit also depends on the particular computer and configuration.
