Pick Saints Row for a more exaggerated crime sandbox, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for martial-arts action, or Cyberpunk 2077 for a futuristic city and deeper role-playing. None is a one-for-one GTA replacement; the best choice depends on which part of the formula matters most to you.

What makes Watch Dogs 2 the closest fit for modern city satire?
Watch Dogs 2 is the strongest option here if what you want is a present-day urban setting where technology and city infrastructure shape the action. Ubisoft’s series description establishes the hacking premise: players manipulate connected city systems. Ubisoft describes the original Watch Dogs as a story in which “The city of Chicago has become the ultimate weapon for a man bent on revenge”; that is publisher copy about the first game, not an independent assessment or a description of Watch Dogs 2.
The comparison to GTA rests on the combination of a contemporary city and a satirical sensibility, not on identical gameplay. Expect hacking to be a defining mechanic, rather than just another way to approach a familiar crime sandbox. Ubisoft lists May 27, 2014 as the release date for the original Watch Dogs; check current store listings for the specific game, platform, and edition you intend to buy.
When is Saints Row a better choice?
Choose Saints Row if personalizing your character, vehicles, and weapons is a major part of the appeal. The official page emphasizes self-expression, rides, weapon looks, and factions. PlayStation says the Definitive Edition integrates all 24 previously available DLC extensions. That figure refers to the content included in this edition as described on PlayStation’s page; it is not a count of missions or a claim about every release on every platform.
Is Cyberpunk 2077 similar to GTA?
Cyberpunk 2077 shares the appeal of roaming a large city and taking on action-focused missions, but it shifts the experience toward futuristic science fiction and role-playing. Its official description presents it as an open-world action-adventure RPG in Night City, with character and playstyle customization and choices that affect the story. Choose it when city exploration and RPG development matter more than contemporary social satire.

Availability depends on platform and edition. Bandai Namco and CD PROJEKT RED announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. That dated announcement confirms the Switch 2 release, but not current stock or availability for other editions and regions.

Store availability and editions can vary by region and platform, so check the exact listing for the version you want. The ESRB rates Watch Dogs Complete Edition Mature 17+ and lists blood, intense violence, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol; it also notes user interaction and in-game purchases. That rating applies to that edition only. Check the rating for the specific edition of any other game you are considering.
