For a removable local copy, use USB Copy; for an off-site copy, use Duple Backup with a compatible cloud destination. Choose a backup mode based on whether you want to copy changes efficiently, keep the destination aligned with the NAS, or retain older versions. App availability and hardware support can vary by TerraMaster model and TOS version, so confirm both on your TNAS before setting up a task.
Choose the right TerraMaster backup tool
| Your goal | Tool | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep a copy on a removable drive | USB Copy | Copies data between TNAS and USB or SD storage; supports incremental, mirror, and multi-version modes, plus scheduling. | The device must use a filesystem TNAS recognizes, and support for a particular drive or port can vary by model. |
| Keep an off-site copy | Duple Backup | Backs up volumes, shared folders, or iSCSI LUNs to supported cloud storage, file servers, or another TNAS; includes scheduling and restore tasks. | Available modes depend on the destination. Cloud providers set their own quotas, transfer policies, and charges. |
| Keep files synchronized with a cloud account | CloudSync | Supports one-way or bidirectional synchronization workflows. | Synchronization is not an independent recovery copy: changes or deletions can propagate between endpoints. |
For disaster recovery, use a backup task rather than treating synchronization as a substitute. TerraMaster distinguishes synchronization from backup in its backup-tool selection FAQ.
Pick a backup mode that matches how you recover
The names can sound similar, but the key differences are what gets copied, whether old states remain available, how much storage is used, and whether the selected destination supports the mode.
| Mode | Copy behavior | Earlier states | Storage and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incremental | Copies new or changed files rather than making a fresh full copy each time. | Not inherently a history of independent full versions; check the selected task’s retention behavior. | Can reduce repeated copying. Availability depends on the destination and tool. |
| Mirror | Makes the destination tree match the source. | Not an archive: a mirror is intended to reflect the source’s current state, not preserve every earlier state. | Requires the destination to reflect the source data; check tool-specific destination support. |
| Multi-version | Stores separate full versions of the source over time. | Yes, it is intended to preserve historical versions. | Uses more storage because versions are independent full copies; destination support can be restricted. |
| Hybrid | Duple Backup shares data among versions. | Retains versions while sharing backup data between them. | Documented for Duple Backup; supported modes depend on the chosen target. |
For accidental deletion or ransomware concerns, favor a mode with version retention and keep another copy offline or off-site when practical. No single backup arrangement is invulnerable.

Back up a TerraMaster NAS to a USB or SD device
- Confirm support. Check that your NAS model supports the connection you intend to use and that USB Copy is available in its TOS version. TerraMaster notes that hardware and software support can vary.
- Connect compatible media. Attach the USB or SD device and use a filesystem recognized by TNAS. TerraMaster’s TOS 7 USB Copy guide lists FAT32, NTFS, ext3, ext4, exFAT, btrfs, and vfat. This list does not guarantee support for every drive, capacity, or port configuration on every model.
- Create a task in USB Copy. Choose the backup path, source, destination, mode, any file filters, and a schedule. The guide documents options to mount the device automatically before a task and eject it automatically after successful completion.
- Run the task and inspect its result. Check the task status and logs rather than assuming that connecting the drive completed a backup.
- Test recovery. Restore a representative file or folder to a safe location and open it to verify that the copy is usable.
Back up a TerraMaster NAS to cloud storage
- Open Duple Backup and create a task. Select the source: a volume, shared folder, or iSCSI LUN.
- Choose a supported destination. The TOS 7 documentation lists Alibaba Cloud OSS, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Baidu Netdisk, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Mega, OneDrive, OpenDrive, and pCloud. Availability for your account or region may differ; the documentation does not establish every provider’s current regional offering.
- Enter the provider’s required credentials. Select a backup mode compatible with that destination, then set the task details and schedule.
- Check the provider’s current terms. Confirm storage quota, transfer limits or policies, account requirements, and any charges directly with the provider; these are not set by TerraMaster.
- Verify and test the backup. Use Duple Backup’s integrity-check and restore features. Review execution logs and version information for scheduled tasks, then perform a test restore suited to your recovery needs.
TerraMaster describes Duple Backup as a disaster-recovery tool with backup and restoration functions in its TOS 7 Duple Backup documentation.

Make the backup useful when something goes wrong
- Keep task status and execution logs in view; investigate failures instead of treating a scheduled task as proof of a successful copy.
- Choose a mode with historical versions if you need to recover from an earlier deletion or changed file. A mirror alone is not version history.
- For important data, maintain both a local copy and an off-site copy where practical. TerraMaster’s FAQ recommends local plus off-site backup for critical data.
- Run a restore check occasionally. A backup is only useful if the files can be retrieved and opened.
- Confirm the exact model, TOS version, connection, destination, and mode before relying on a setup; the TOS 7 documentation does not establish universal support for all combinations.
