To judge its concentration, look at dated portfolio weights—not the fund’s name or number of holdings alone—and consider how its positions overlap with the rest of your investments.
What concentration risk means in a growth ETF
Concentration risk is the added sensitivity a portfolio can have when a large share of its investments depends on a relatively small set of issuers, industries, sectors, or geographic areas. The SEC explains that concentrating in an industry, sector, or geographic area can reduce diversification and may make performance more volatile than that of a fund that does not concentrate in those areas. SEC: How to Read a Mutual Fund Prospectus
This is a risk dimension, not a forecast. A concentrated fund is not certain to underperform, and concentration alone does not establish whether a particular fund or allocation is suitable for an individual investor.
How to tell whether a fund is concentrated
Start with the sponsor’s holdings page or fact sheet. Record the reporting date, each of the largest positions and their weights, the combined weight of the ten largest positions, and the sector allocations. The SEC notes that most ETF sponsors post holdings on their websites daily, but figures should still be treated as dated snapshots. SEC: Mutual Funds and ETFs—A Guide for Investors

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Issuer concentration: How much of the portfolio is held in its largest companies? Note the biggest individual position and the top-ten total.
- Sector concentration: How much is invested in each sector? A fund can have many issuers but still lean heavily toward one sector.
- Portfolio overlap: Do the fund’s largest holdings also appear in your other ETFs or stocks? Several funds can repeat the same exposures, so adding tickers does not necessarily add diversification.
These are related but distinct checks: a fund may be concentrated in a few companies, a sector, or both.
What dated fund examples show—and what they do not
| Fund and source | Reported figure | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG), Vanguard fact sheet | Its ten largest holdings were 65.5% of total net assets as of March 31, 2026. | A substantial top-ten share can coexist with a fund holding many stocks. This is a dated figure, not VUG’s October 2026 allocation. Vanguard VUG profile |
| Schwab U.S. Large-Cap Growth ETF (SCHG), Schwab Asset Management | 196 holdings as of September 9, 2026. | The count does not show how evenly assets are distributed; pair it with current holding weights and sector information. Schwab SCHG profile |
These examples are not a category-wide measure, and they cannot be compared as if they were equivalent concentration statistics: one is a top-ten portfolio weight and the other is a holdings count. No universal cutoff establishes when a growth ETF is “too concentrated.”

Why the growth label is not enough
A fund’s name does not fully explain how it selects or weights stocks. Check its objective, index or selection strategy, and principal risks in the prospectus. Vanguard says VUG seeks to replicate its target index by holding constituent stocks in approximately their index weights, so its index methodology influences the resulting portfolio weights. Fund shareholder reports can add context: the SEC says they include a graphical presentation of investments by category and may list the ten largest holdings. These reports can help you understand a dated portfolio alongside the sponsor’s more current holdings disclosures. SEC: Mutual Funds and ETFs—A Guide for Investors

A practical comparison checklist
- Open the sponsor’s latest holdings page or fact sheet. Write down its as-of date, the largest individual positions, the top-ten combined weight, and sector allocations.
- Read the prospectus. Review the investment objective, index or stock-selection method, principal risks, and costs; do not rely on the fund name alone.
- Check a shareholder report. Use its portfolio categories and any disclosed largest holdings to put the holdings snapshot in context.
- Compare across your whole portfolio. Look for repeated companies and sector tilts in your other ETFs and individual stocks, rather than evaluating each ETF in isolation.
- Compare funds on the same date where possible. Consider top-ten weight, largest-position weight, sector allocation, methodology, overlap, fees, and trading characteristics. SEC investor materials note that fund websites may also provide NAV, market price, premium or discount data, and median bid-ask spreads.
Holdings weights change, so use the latest sponsor information available when making a comparison and keep its reporting date attached to every figure. This information is educational, not individualized investment advice.
