Both are self-hosted servers for organizing and streaming your own media, but their licensing models differ. Before committing, check the features you need and test your actual files on the devices you plan to use.
What Jellyfin and Emby do
Both products let you manage a personal media library on a server and play it through client apps. Emby describes a server-and-client setup: the server stores and organizes the library, while clients play media over a home network or remotely when the network is configured for access. Emby does not provide movies or TV shows; its Quick Start says, “Emby is NOT a media streaming service. We do not provide access to movies or TV shows.”
Jellyfin describes itself as a Free Software Media System for managing and streaming a user’s media. Its documentation says Jellyfin descended from Emby’s 3.5.2 release and presents it as an alternative to proprietary media servers.
How their licensing and features compare
The main difference is whether you want a product with premium feature gates. Jellyfin says it has no premium licenses or features. Emby offers a free tier and Emby Premiere; its Premiere feature matrix identifies these differences:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is not a complete feature-by-feature comparison: the table highlights capabilities identified in Emby’s matrix, not every product feature or client-specific behavior. Check the current matrix and Jellyfin documentation for any capability that will determine your choice. Current Emby pricing and the full parity of client apps are not established here, so confirm those directly with Emby before deciding.
Transcoding depends on your files and playback devices
Transcoding converts media during playback when a client cannot directly play the file or when the connection or playback settings require a compatible version. Direct playback avoids that conversion. Both products document transcoding, but neither brand alone determines how much processing your setup will need.

Jellyfin explains that a client sends profiles describing supported codecs, resolutions, bitrates, and constraints. Emby says its apps generally choose playback settings based on network performance, media information, device capabilities, and configuration. As a result, an older client, an incompatible format, or a bitrate limit may prompt transcoding, while another device may play the same file directly. See Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation and Emby’s transcoding documentation.
Hardware acceleration: match the method to your host
Both servers document hardware-accelerated transcoding, but supported methods vary by hardware, operating system, and configuration. Jellyfin’s documentation lists modern Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip GPUs where the required hardware is available. Emby documents different options by operating system: its overview includes Nvidia, Intel Quick Sync, AMD AMF, and DXVA on Windows, and Nvidia, VA-API, and Intel Quick Sync on Linux.

Before buying a component, check the current Jellyfin transcoding guidance or Emby hardware acceleration overview for the exact host, operating system, and acceleration method you intend to use. A discrete GPU is not a universal requirement: it matters when your transcoding workload and compatible hardware make acceleration useful.
Where you can install the server
Emby lists Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD, Docker, NAS devices, and other installation targets in its installation documentation. Jellyfin links to installation paths for Windows, macOS, Linux, containers, Synology, and TrueNAS SCALE from its documentation. These are product-level platform lists, not guarantees that every release or setup method is available for every device. Confirm the current instructions for your specific NAS or operating system before installing.

Remote streaming and server requirements
Remote playback requires a reachable server, appropriate network configuration, and enough bandwidth for the media and playback method. Emby notes that requirements depend on file format, clients, and available bandwidth, and that real-time transcoding is CPU-intensive. Jellyfin’s hardware selection guidance offers general network considerations, not a universal minimum that applies to every household.
Test remote playback with your own files and devices if it matters to your setup. A client that can directly play a file and a connection that can sustain its bitrate may reduce the need for real-time conversion; incompatible formats or a connection constraint may trigger it.

Choosing a server and host for your library
Pick Jellyfin if
- A no-premium-license approach is central to your choice.
- Its current client support fits the devices you use.
- You are willing to check your own formats and playback conditions rather than assume every client will behave alike.
Pick Emby if
- Its documented feature set fits your needs.
- You are comfortable checking which capabilities require Premiere and verifying current pricing and terms with Emby.
- The Emby clients and installation options you need are available for your devices and host.
Use equipment you already have when it fits
An always-on computer or NAS can host a personal media server; Emby explicitly lists NAS platforms among its installation targets. Storage needs depend on the size and format of your own library, so there is no universal drive-capacity recommendation here. A new host or transcoding component is not automatically necessary: first see whether your existing equipment can serve your library and whether your usual playback devices direct-play the files.
