Choose a mechanical keyboard for its broad range of familiar switch feels; choose a Hall-effect or TMR keyboard if adjustable actuation and magnetic-key features matter to you. Hall effect and TMR are different ways to sense a magnet, but neither technology guarantees a better-feeling keyboard or a worthwhile upgrade by itself.

How do mechanical, Hall-effect, and TMR switches detect a keypress?

Switch type How a press is detected What that means for the buyer
Mechanical Moving switch parts bring physical contacts together to complete an electrical circuit. The switch model determines much of the feel, and the established category offers a broad choice of switches. See RTINGS’ explanation of keyboard switch sensing.
Hall effect A magnet moves with the switch stem; a sensor on the keyboard’s circuit board detects magnetic-field changes as a voltage change. Because the sensor can respond to the key’s position, the keyboard may offer adjustable actuation or reset features if its firmware supports them.
TMR A moving magnet changes the resistance of a TMR sensor; the keyboard controller and firmware turn that measurement into a key signal. It is another magnetic sensing method, not a guarantee of a particular feature set or typing feel. CHERRY describes sensing during key travel and re-triggering as a key returns in its TMR technology explanation.

Hall-effect keyboards detect magnetic-field-related voltage changes, while TMR keyboards detect magnetic-field-related resistance changes. Both avoid using physical contacts to register the press. The practical features depend on the keyboard’s sensor, controller, and firmware—not just the name of its sensing technology.

What should you choose based on how you use a keyboard?

Choose mechanical if switch feel and choice come first

Start with mechanical boards if you want a particular conventional switch feel or a broad selection of switch models. Compare the actual switch’s force, travel, sound, and construction, along with the keyboard’s layout and build. “Mechanical” alone does not tell you how a board will feel.

Choose Hall effect or TMR if adjustable input matters

Consider magnetic keyboards if you want to adjust where a key registers or use features such as dynamic reset. Check the specific keyboard’s software and firmware for the controls you need; analog magnetic sensing makes these features possible, but does not ensure every board supports them or behaves identically.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pay more for TMR only for a reason you can verify

CHERRY and Keychron describe TMR as highly sensitive and energy-efficient; Keychron also describes higher cost and a less mature supply chain compared with Hall effect. These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent, same-condition measurements showing that every TMR keyboard will feel or perform better. If the difference matters to your purchase, look for independent measurements of the exact boards you are comparing. Sources: CHERRY and Keychron.

Does TMR have better sensitivity or use less power?

Those are potential sensor-level advantages, not a universal verdict on keyboard performance. Texas Instruments’ component comparison gives one example: its TMAG5134 Hall sensor can detect fields as weak as 1 mT and consume as little as 0.6 µA; the comparison table lists a TMR component with a 0.3 mT threshold and current below 0.05 µA. These are component specifications for particular sensors and configurations—not measurements of whole-keyboard power use, latency, or accuracy. Source: Texas Instruments, 2025.

Can you put mechanical switches in a Hall-effect or TMR keyboard?

Not by default. Compatibility depends on the keyboard’s sensor and circuit-board layout, socket, magnet characteristics, and firmware. A hot-swap socket by itself does not mean a board accepts every magnetic or conventional mechanical switch.

Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact board and switch type. For example, Akko says its 5075 V5 TMR supports magnetic switches and 5-pin MX mechanical switches. That claim applies to that product and its supported switches; it should not be generalized to other Hall-effect or TMR keyboards.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Choose your priority. Start with switch feel and variety for a conventional mechanical board, or adjustable actuation and reset features for a magnetic board.
  2. Verify the feature implementation. Check the software, firmware, and per-key controls offered by the specific keyboard rather than assuming they follow from “Hall effect” or “TMR.”
  3. Check physical compatibility. Confirm the supported switches, sockets, keycaps, and any stated hot-swap limits for the exact model.
  4. Compare the whole keyboard. Consider layout, connectivity, build, sound, price, support, and return terms alongside the sensor type.
  5. Validate product claims and current details. Treat precision, polling, and price figures as manufacturer specifications; confirm the exact configuration and current availability in your region.

Examples of magnetic keyboards and manufacturer claims

Product specifications can illustrate what manufacturers offer, but they are not independent comparisons between sensing technologies.

  • Akko 5075 V5 TMR: Akko lists a price range of $109.99–$119.99 and claims up to 0.005 mm rapid-trigger precision, dual 8 kHz polling, tri-mode wireless operation, and hot-swap support for magnetic and 5-pin MX mechanical switches. These are manufacturer claims on its product page; check the current price, availability, and configuration for your region.
  • CHERRY MX 8.2 Pro TMR Wireless: CHERRY’s announcement states 0.01 mm input precision, 8,000 Hz polling, wireless use, and dual hot-swap support. It gave a January 29 launch date and an RRP of €229.99 / £199.99 / $249.99. Because this is an announcement rather than confirmation of current availability or price, check the present product status before treating those details as a buying offer. The same announcement said the K5 Pro TMR was planned for spring, with price to be announced.
