If the price of a flight rises after you book, the higher fare shown to new customers generally does not change the price of your completed ticket. If the price falls instead, you usually are not owed the difference automatically. Check your ticket’s rules and compare the cost of changing or cancelling it before taking action.
Does a higher fare change the ticket you already bought?
Usually, no. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says an airline generally cannot increase the price of a completed ticket purchase after the fact. A limited exception may apply to a government-imposed tax or fee increase if it was disclosed before purchase and you consented to it. A higher price in a new search is normally the fare now offered to other customers, not a new charge on your existing ticket. DOT explains the post-purchase price rule.
If you see an unexpected extra charge on your receipt or payment statement, compare it with your ticket confirmation and contact the airline or the agency that issued the ticket. Do not assume that a higher search result explains an additional charge.
Can you get money back if the fare drops?
There is no general right to an automatic refund of the difference when a fare for the same or a similar flight later drops. Whether you can get a refund, change the booking, or receive a credit depends on the ticket’s terms, the airline’s policy, how you booked, and any fees or fare difference that apply.

For example, Delta says it does not offer post-24-hour price adjustments unless the traveler bought a refundable fare. That is Delta’s policy, not a rule for every airline. Review the rules for your own ticket rather than relying on a carrier’s general policy page alone. Delta’s cancellation guidance describes its policy and fare-type differences.
Check whether the U.S. 24-hour cancellation option applies
For tickets bought at least seven days before departure, U.S. airlines must offer either a full-refund cancellation option within 24 hours of purchase or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price without payment. They do not have to offer both. If the airline took payment with the reservation, it must allow cancellation and a full refund within the applicable window. This is not a requirement to let you change a ticket for free.

The requirement applies to bookings made directly with an airline, not tickets bought through a travel agent or online travel agency (OTA). An agent may offer a similar option, but check its terms. The DOT notes that refunding and rebooking can sometimes cost less than paying a change fee and fare difference, while warning that prices can move quickly. Read the DOT’s 24-hour reservation rule and guidance.
What to compare before changing or cancelling
A lower advertised fare is only useful if changing your existing ticket leaves you better off overall. Compare the actual replacement itinerary and the complete cost of each option.

- Refund or credit: Find out whether cancellation returns money to your original payment method or gives you airline credit.
- Fees and fare difference: Check any change or cancellation fee, plus the difference between your original fare and the fare available for the replacement booking.
- Credit conditions: Confirm the amount, expiration date, and any restrictions on using a credit.
- Itinerary match: Make sure the new fare is for a comparable itinerary, including the dates and flights you actually want.
- Ticket control: Establish whether the airline or a third-party agency issued the ticket and handles changes or refunds.
- Availability at checkout: Verify that the lower fare is still available before cancelling the existing ticket.
Do not cancel first and assume you can book the lower fare later. The fare may disappear before you complete the replacement booking.
What to do, step by step
- Identify what changed. Compare your ticket receipt with the current search result. If the airline is charging more for a completed purchase, contact the ticket issuer and consult the DOT’s post-purchase price guidance. If only a new search costs more, that does not by itself alter your existing ticket.
- If the fare dropped, check the timing. Note when you bought the ticket and when the flight departs. If you booked directly with a U.S. airline at least seven days before departure, check whether the 24-hour cancellation window remains open. If you used an agent or OTA, ask it what options it offers.
- Read the ticket-specific change and cancellation terms. Use the airline’s or issuer’s change/cancel flow to see the fee, fare difference, refund or credit, and any credit restrictions that apply to your booking.
- Compare the net result. Consider what you would actually pay or receive after fees and fare differences—not just the lower fare displayed in search.
- Confirm the replacement before giving up the existing ticket. Make sure the desired fare is available and that you understand the existing ticket’s refund or credit outcome before cancelling.
- Contact the issuer if an agent booked your ticket. The U.S. airline 24-hour requirement does not apply to third-party bookings, and the agency may control cancellation or refund processing.
When a schedule change or cancellation is different
An airline cancelling your flight or significantly changing its schedule is a separate situation from a fare changing in the market. DOT guidance describes refund rights when the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and you reject the alternative it offers. A lower fare for a new booking, by itself, does not establish that right. See the DOT’s refund guidance for cancellations and significant changes.
