Adjustable actuation lets you choose how far a key must travel downward before a press registers. Rapid Trigger changes how a key resets and becomes ready to register again after you start releasing it. On a supported Hall-effect keyboard, the two features can work together: one sets the press point, while the other can reduce the upward travel needed between repeated presses.

How a Hall-effect keyboard senses a key

A magnet moves with each key stem. A Hall sensor on the keyboard’s printed circuit board (PCB) detects changes in the magnet’s field as the key moves and produces a signal corresponding to the key’s position. Because that sensing is contactless, it differs from a conventional mechanical switch, which registers a press by closing physical metal contacts.

The keyboard’s electronics interpret the position signal. Texas Instruments explains that a sensor’s linear voltage output can be read by an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to set a key’s actuation point. Its application note uses a standard 104-key full-size keyboard as an engineering design example: directly sensing each key can require a corresponding number of ADC inputs, so the note discusses enabling and multiplexing approaches to reduce that requirement. That is a circuit-design example, not a measurement of consumer keyboard performance. Texas Instruments’ Hall-effect keyboard application note explains the sensing and ADC approach.

A magnetic switch alone does not guarantee adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger. The switch, sensor, PCB controller and firmware must work together, so check the complete keyboard’s specifications and software documentation. Gateron illustrates this platform dependency with its GT60 Lite HE PCB, which combines Hall sensing with software-programmable pre-travel. Gateron’s explanation of Hall-effect keyboards and magnetic switches describes the system.

What adjustable actuation means

The actuation point is the position on a key’s downward travel at which the keyboard registers a press. A shallower setting means less downward movement is needed; a deeper setting means more travel is needed. Where the software supports per-key controls, you can choose different points for different keys—for example, a sensitive setting for frequently tapped movement keys and a deeper one for a key you do not want to activate accidentally.

Actuation distance is not the same as total switch travel. Actuation is the configured trigger position; total travel is the full physical distance the key can move. As a product-specific example, Gateron states that its Magnetic Jade Pro has 3.5 ± 0.1 mm of total travel, while the compatible keyboard determines where within that travel an input registers. The travel figure is not a universal Hall-effect specification or an actuation setting. Gateron’s article gives this example.

What Rapid Trigger means

In a fixed-point setup, a key registers when it passes its actuation point on the way down. To register another press, it must then return past a reset point. Rapid Trigger can instead use movement to reset or re-arm the key after a press: once the key starts moving upward, the keyboard can make it ready to register again, then detect a new downward movement.

This behavior can reduce the upward travel needed before a repeated input registers. It does not make the key physically move faster. It can be useful for repeated inputs such as strafing, counter-movement or rhythm-game patterns, but that use case is not proof of improved player performance. A highly sensitive setting may also take practice and precise finger control.

Vendors describe their implementations in their own terms. CORSAIR says Rapid Trigger lets a key reset and reactivate along its travel without needing to clear the actuation point; ASUS describes its switches as resetting during upward movement. Those descriptions apply to supported products and settings, not to every magnetic keyboard. See CORSAIR’s explanation of Rapid Trigger and adjustable actuation and ASUS ROG’s Rapid Trigger explainer.

How the features differ

Feature What it sets or detects What changes for the user
Adjustable actuation The position on the downstroke where the press registers How far down you must press before an input begins
Rapid Trigger Reset and re-arm behavior based on key movement after activation How much upward travel may be needed before a repeated press can register

The features can be combined, but neither is another name for the other. A keyboard may offer adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger, both or neither; its model documentation determines which controls are available.

What to check when comparing keyboards

Do not treat the smallest advertised millimeter value as a measure of overall keyboard quality or a guarantee of a real-world input advantage. Compare how each implementation works, including:

  • Actuation range and increments: Check the supported positions and how finely the software lets you adjust them.
  • Rapid Trigger controls: Look for the documented reset or sensitivity behavior rather than assuming all implementations work identically.
  • Key coverage: Confirm whether settings apply per key or only to selected keys by default.
  • Calibration and software: Check whether calibration is needed, which companion app is required and whether the keyboard provides onboard controls.
  • Settings persistence: Verify whether configurations remain active without the companion software running.
  • Everyday fit: Compare layout and typing feel as well as gaming features.
