Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For internet access, put Jellyfin behind a reverse proxy that serves a trusted HTTPS certificate, and keep Jellyfin’s own application port off the public internet. Configure Jellyfin to trust only the proxy’s IP address, pass WebSockets and the expected forwarded headers, then test from outside your home network. If you do not need a publicly reachable server, private-network access is another option.
Choose whether Jellyfin needs to be reachable from the internet
Remote access is optional: Jellyfin works without an internet connection. Its local discovery feature is limited to the local subnet, so it will not find a server across the internet. If only a few of your own devices need access, a private VPN-style network can avoid making a Jellyfin endpoint generally reachable from the public internet, though it requires setup on each client and network. Jellyfin’s documentation does not prescribe a particular VPN product.
If you choose public access, Jellyfin recommends HTTPS terminated separately at a reverse proxy rather than exposing Jellyfin’s own port directly. The Jellyfin networking documentation says opening a port directly to the internet is insecure and not recommended.
Understand which ports belong on the public side
By default, Jellyfin uses TCP 8096 for HTTP and TCP 8920 for HTTPS when HTTPS is enabled. Port 7359/UDP is for local-network discovery, not remote access. With the recommended proxy arrangement, remote clients connect to the proxy; it forwards requests internally to Jellyfin.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Purpose | Port and protocol | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin HTTP service | 8096/TCP | Keep it internal behind the proxy; do not forward it directly from the router to the internet. |
| Jellyfin HTTPS service | 8920/TCP when enabled | Usually unnecessary for clients when the proxy handles HTTPS; keep the service behind the proxy. |
| Proxy web endpoints | 80/TCP and 443/TCP | Jellyfin’s reverse-proxy guidance calls for forwarding these to the proxy for its documented arrangements. Expose only the endpoints required by your setup. |
| Local discovery | 7359/UDP | For discovery on the local network, not a substitute for remote access configuration. |
| Optional HTTP/3/QUIC | 443/UDP | Optional in Jellyfin’s proxy guidance; not needed for a basic secure setup. |
Port numbers and requirements are from Jellyfin’s networking and reverse-proxy documentation. Your router should direct public web traffic to the proxy, not directly to 8096 or 8920.
Choose a reverse proxy and hostname
Use a hostname whose DNS records point to your server’s public IP address, then configure a reverse proxy to receive web requests and forward them to Jellyfin on the internal network. Jellyfin recommends Caddy for ease of use, particularly with HTTPS. Its guide demonstrates automatic HTTPS when a public domain points to the server. Jellyfin also documents Nginx, Traefik, HAProxy, and Apache; its overview notes they have a greater learning curve than Caddy. Whatever proxy you choose must correctly handle forwarded headers and WebSockets.

| Access method | Public exposure | Setup considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Caddy reverse proxy | Proxy web endpoints, rather than Jellyfin’s application port | Jellyfin recommends it for ease of use. Its guide shows automatic HTTPS for a public domain pointed at the server. |
| Other reverse proxy | Proxy web endpoints, rather than Jellyfin’s application port | Jellyfin provides guides for Nginx, Traefik, HAProxy, and Apache. Configure forwarded headers, WebSockets, and TLS correctly. |
| Private VPN-style network | No generally public Jellyfin endpoint | Requires client and network configuration. Jellyfin confirms internet access is not required for the server to function; the cited guidance does not specify a VPN product. |
See Jellyfin’s reverse-proxy overview and Caddy guide. The Caddy instructions and exact proxy configuration may change, so follow the current guide for your versions and topology.
Set up HTTPS and forward requests through the proxy
- Point your hostname at the server. Create the required DNS record or records so the hostname resolves to the server’s public IP address. Confirm your router and firewall can direct the proxy’s required public web traffic to the proxy.
- Configure the proxy’s upstream. Have the proxy forward requests to Jellyfin at its internal address and service port. Do not create a public router forward directly to Jellyfin’s 8096/TCP or 8920/TCP ports.
- Issue and serve a trusted certificate. Configure HTTPS at the proxy and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS. Use a trusted certificate authority; Jellyfin discourages self-signed certificates because of security and compatibility issues. Check that remote clients accept the certificate without warnings.
- Check certificate-flow credentials. Jellyfin’s Caddy guide says DNS provider tokens are generally not needed for automatic HTTPS and warns against excessive token permissions. If your chosen certificate flow requires a token, limit it to the permissions it needs.
Jellyfin’s documentation says it supports HTTPS but strongly recommends handling HTTPS termination separately on a reverse proxy. The Caddy guide describes its automatic HTTPS setup; exact DNS, firewall, and certificate steps depend on the proxy and network.

Tell Jellyfin which proxy it can trust
When Jellyfin sits behind a proxy, it may otherwise see the proxy as the connecting address rather than the remote client. In Jellyfin’s Network settings, add the proxy’s IP address or addresses under Known Proxies. Do not trust arbitrary addresses: Jellyfin uses that trust setting to decide whether to accept forwarded client information.
Configure the proxy to send the forwarded headers Jellyfin expects, and make sure the actual client address is preserved. This matters for remote-access restrictions and for identifying where a connection originates. If Jellyfin reports the proxy’s address for every remote user, check that the proxy sends the forwarded client headers and that its address is listed correctly as a Known Proxy. Refer to Jellyfin’s reverse-proxy configuration guidance for the selected proxy.

Allow WebSockets and review remote-access controls
WebSockets must pass through the reverse proxy for Jellyfin’s web client behavior to work correctly. Configure the proxy accordingly, then test both signing in and playing media from a genuinely external network, such as a mobile connection with Wi-Fi disabled.
Review server-level and per-user remote access permissions, and set the local-network ranges in Jellyfin to match the actual subnets in use. These settings help Jellyfin distinguish local and remote connections; they do not replace the proxy’s TLS or trusted-proxy configuration.

Disable automatic port mapping unless you need it
Jellyfin’s setup wizard documentation recommends disabling automatic port mapping unless it is specifically required. The feature relies on UPnP, which Jellyfin associates with security concerns. Review the option in the setup wizard and leave it off if you are managing router and proxy exposure yourself. See the Jellyfin setup wizard documentation.
Protect logs and verify the finished setup
Proxy logs can expose sensitive information if they record full request URLs: Jellyfin notes that authentication information such as an api_key may appear in a URL. Avoid logging full URLs or configure redaction for sensitive query parameters, and protect access to retained logs.
Quick Recap
- From outside your home network, open the HTTPS hostname and confirm the certificate is trusted.
- Sign in and test playback; confirm WebSockets work through the proxy.
- Check Jellyfin’s connection information or logs to ensure remote clients are identified by their client address, not all as the proxy.
- Confirm your router exposes only the proxy endpoints needed for your configuration, not Jellyfin’s application port.
- Check that remote access permissions and local-network ranges match your intended users and network.
- Verify automatic port mapping is disabled unless you have a specific need for it.
