For a new Jellyfin server, start with a strong administrator password, correctly configured libraries and metadata, and a deliberate review of remote access. Next, set appropriate permissions for each user. Only adjust transcoding or hardware acceleration after checking what a real playback session is doing.
1. Set up the administrator account, libraries, and metadata
During the setup wizard, create a strong administrator password, add the folders for your media libraries, and choose your preferred metadata language and region. You can customize the metadata language for an individual library later. Jellyfin’s setup wizard guide walks through these initial choices.
If a folder does not appear in the picker, check that the Jellyfin server process has permission to access it. A path that exists on the computer may still be unavailable to the account running Jellyfin.
2. Decide how the server will be reachable
The setup wizard includes “Allow remote access to this server.” Enable remote access if you intend to use Jellyfin away from home, but do not treat that checkbox as a complete or secure network configuration. Jellyfin says the server is not designed to be exposed directly to the internet; review its networking guidance before making the server reachable outside your home network.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Leave automatic port mapping off unless you specifically need it. Jellyfin’s setup documentation explains: “Since "automatic port mapping" relies on UPnP, a protocol commonly associated with security concerns, it is recommended to disable this option unless it is specifically required.”
3. Give each user only the access they need
Open Dashboard > Users to create or edit accounts. Instead of sharing an unrestricted administrator login, tailor each account to its person and purpose. User controls include:

- Whether remote connections and playback that requires transcoding are allowed.
- A per-stream internet bitrate limit.
- Device access, media deletion permissions, and access schedules.
- Parental ratings and tags, where appropriate.
New users can be hidden from login screens by default. Check the account’s actual permissions before handing out credentials, particularly if the user should not be able to delete media or access every library. See Jellyfin’s user management documentation.
4. Review what the server reveals on login screens
In the General settings, you can set the server name, a login disclaimer, a splash-screen image, and custom CSS. The server name is shown when users select a server. The splash image can be visible without authentication; Jellyfin may generate it from content on the server, which could reveal something about your library. Choose an image or disable that exposure according to who can reach the login screen. The server settings guide describes these options.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
5. Diagnose playback before changing transcoding
Play a representative file and check the Dashboard to see whether Jellyfin is using Direct Play, Remux, Direct Stream, or Transcode. These modes involve different amounts of server work:
- Direct Play: Jellyfin sends the file as-is, adding almost no playback load to the server.
- Remux: Jellyfin changes the container while leaving the underlying streams intact.
- Direct Stream: Jellyfin transcodes audio while preserving the video stream.
- Transcode: Jellyfin processes video, generally the most demanding of these modes.
When a client plays local media, it reports capabilities such as supported codecs, resolution, and bitrate constraints. Jellyfin chooses an output within those capabilities; the documentation does not provide a manual resolution override. If you use the server for other work, leave the transcoding thread-count setting alone unless you have a specific reason to change it. See Jellyfin’s playback and transcoding documentation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A transcode is not automatically a problem: the client may need a format or bitrate it can handle. Use the session details to identify the mode first, then consider whether the cause is the file’s codec, the client’s capabilities, or a stream limit you set.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Enable hardware acceleration only when your system supports it
Hardware acceleration is not a universal first setting. It depends on the GPU, operating system, drivers, and Jellyfin’s transcoder setup. Jellyfin documents Intel QSV, NVIDIA NVENC/NVDEC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, macOS VideoToolbox, and Linux Rockchip RKMPP. Check the current platform-specific instructions for your combination before enabling a method. Jellyfin recommends its jellyfin-ffmpeg build; a different FFmpeg binary may provide only partial acceleration. After configuring it, run an actual transcode and verify activity with your platform’s monitoring tools. The hardware acceleration guide covers supported methods and requirements.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
HDR video that must be converted to SDR requires tone-mapping, which can be demanding. Jellyfin’s documented transcoding path does not currently support HDR-to-HDR tone-mapping or passing through HDR metadata, and software tone-mapping can be very slow. Check the latest support for your platform and hardware before choosing a GPU or changing tone-mapping options.
7. Set remote bitrate limits to fit your connection
A per-stream internet bitrate limit can prevent remote playback from consuming more upload capacity than your connection can sustain. Set it according to your actual upload speed and the number of simultaneous remote streams you expect—not just the advertised download speed. Jellyfin’s hardware guidance suggests at least 20 Mbps upload bandwidth for remote access, and suggests limiting Jellyfin to 70% of total upload speed when that total is below 100 Mbps. These are planning recommendations, not universal minimums or guaranteed capacity; actual results depend on the connection and concurrent use. Apply a user’s per-stream limit in Dashboard > Users.
8. Treat hardware figures as planning guidance, not required upgrades
Jellyfin’s documentation offers these general recommendations for planning a server, but they do not mean every installation needs new hardware:
| Resource | Jellyfin’s stated guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SSD storage | 100 GB for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache; consider more on Windows 11 or when transcoding many large files. | Plan around your operating system, cache use, and workload. |
| Memory | 8 GB generally; 4 GB may be enough for Linux without a graphical interface. | Available memory needs depend on what else the server runs. |
| Upload bandwidth | At least 20 Mbps for remote access. | Consider stream quality and how many remote users may watch at once. |
These are Jellyfin Project planning recommendations; the retrieved official documentation does not state a publication year for them. It also recommends Ethernet for the server and names Intel N100 among integrated-graphics CPU options, but neither implies that you should buy new hardware before checking your existing server and playback workload. Jellyfin’s hardware selection guide provides additional context.
