Intel Foundry is Intel’s chip-manufacturing and related-services business. It makes chips for Intel’s own product groups and is building a business to manufacture wafers and provide advanced packaging for outside customers. For buyers, its importance is indirect: manufacturing technology, capacity, packaging and supply-chain choices can influence which chips reach products and when. A process name alone, however, cannot tell you whether a particular laptop or processor is the best choice.
What does Intel Foundry do?
A foundry manufactures chips designed by another organization. Intel Foundry also makes chips for Intel: the company’s product groups design and sell products, while the manufacturing organization supplies the production capability. Intel describes this internal-foundry model as giving its product units a relationship with manufacturing more like that of an outside, fabless customer.
The business is broader than running fabrication plants. Intel describes a “systems foundry” offer that combines process technology, advanced packaging, design enablement, intellectual property (IP), electronic design automation (EDA) ecosystem support and manufacturing. In practical terms, customers need both a way to build a chip and the supporting tools, design resources and packaging options to turn it into a usable product.
Intel introduced this systems-foundry approach in its February 21, 2024 announcement, “Intel Launches World’s First Systems Foundry Designed for the AI Era,” and outlined process, packaging, EDA/IP support and customer alliances again at its April 29, 2025 Foundry Direct Connect. These are descriptions of Intel’s offering, not independent assessments of how it compares with other foundries.

What is Intel 18A, and what is its current status?
Intel 18A is one of Intel’s process technology offerings. Intel reported on June 16, 2026, that 18A entered production in 2025 and that the related Intel 18A-P had entered risk production. “Risk production” is a distinct milestone from a broad, mature volume ramp; the announcement does not establish how much capacity or yield is available to every customer.
Intel describes 18A-P as a compatible performance enhancement to the 18A family. In its June 2026 technical announcement, Intel reported the following comparisons with 18A. These are vendor-reported claims, not independently verified comparative benchmarks:

Intel’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings-call comments said it was shipping its first 18A products, yields were improving, and more work remained to ramp supply. Those statements describe Intel’s position at that time, not a guarantee of current output or the yield available for a particular product.
Does Intel make chips for other companies?
Yes. Intel is pursuing outside customers for wafer manufacturing and packaging, but an announced design or customer relationship should not be mistaken for proof of mass production.

| Customer or program | What Intel has announced or reported | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft | Intel announced that Microsoft had chosen a chip design it planned to produce on Intel 18A. | An announced plan; the announcement alone does not establish volume production. |
| AWS | Intel announced plans for an AWS AI fabric chip on Intel 18A and a custom Xeon 6 chip on Intel 3. The arrangement was described as a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework covering products and wafers. | A described commercial framework and planned products; not proof that either chip is already in volume production. |
| Potential Intel 14A customers | In its fourth-quarter 2025 earnings-call comments, Intel said engagement was active and discussed potential supplier decisions across the second half of 2026 and first half of 2027. | Intel’s dated account of active engagement and anticipated decision timing, not confirmation of a customer award. |
| U.S. defense programs | Intel has described access to Intel 18A and packaging through the RAMP-C and Secure Enclave initiatives. In July 2026, it announced completion of the RAMP-C program. | Government-focused access and program activity; not a general assurance of supply or delivery for commercial buyers. |
Intel’s September 16, 2024 Foundry Momentum update reported an expected lifetime deal value of more than $15 billion across wafer and advanced-packaging business. That was Intel’s forecast at the time, not booked revenue or a current audited figure.
Why does Intel’s foundry business matter to chip buyers?
Most buyers do not choose a foundry directly. They buy a processor, graphics chip, phone or computer whose manufacturer has already made decisions about chip design, production and packaging. Those decisions can affect product availability, power and performance tradeoffs, and how components are combined. Foundry execution can therefore matter to buyers without appearing as a selectable option at checkout.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Product timing and availability: A process milestone is useful only if production can support the products that depend on it. Intel’s comments about improving yields and continuing to ramp supply illustrate why a production announcement does not by itself answer how readily a particular chip will be available.
- Packaging and integration: Advanced packaging is part of Intel’s systems-foundry offer. It can be relevant to how chip components are assembled into a product, but a packaging capability announcement alone does not reveal the cost, performance or availability of a specific finished device.
- Supply-chain geography: Intel’s U.S. manufacturing and government programs are relevant context when companies assess sourcing and resilience. They do not guarantee that a consumer product will be available on a given date or unaffected by supply constraints.
One downstream example is Intel Core Ultra Series 3: Intel says the family was its first product manufactured using Intel 18A, as described in its 2025–26 CSR Executive Summary. That is a family-level example, not a claim that every Intel laptop uses 18A. For a purchase decision, check the exact device configuration and its product specifications rather than inferring its manufacturing process from the processor family name alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should buyers compare chips or foundry claims?
For a consumer, the useful comparison is usually between complete products, not between foundry brands in isolation. Compare the exact processor or device models on evidence that corresponds to your needs:
Best Value

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Performance: Look for benchmarks on the workloads you care about, and confirm they apply to the exact chip or device configuration.
- Power and battery behavior: Review tests and specifications for the actual device. A vendor’s same-power or same-performance process comparison is not a direct prediction of battery life in a finished laptop.
- Price, availability and support: Check the current listing, configuration and support terms for the product you are considering.
- Manufacturing claims: Distinguish a process roadmap or announced customer engagement from a reported production milestone, shipping product or demonstrated volume. Attribute vendor performance claims to the vendor.
If comparing foundry businesses themselves, relevant axes include demonstrated production maturity, evidence about yield and capacity, design-tool and IP readiness, advanced packaging, customer commitments versus announced plans, supply-chain geography and total customer economics. Intel’s public statements cited here do not provide a balanced cross-foundry comparison of performance, pricing or yields, so they cannot establish that Intel is ahead of or behind a specific competitor on those measures.
What Intel’s foundry business does not tell you
Intel Foundry’s progress matters to the products it can manufacture and to companies deciding where to source chips. It does not, by itself, establish that a device is faster, more efficient, less expensive or more available than an alternative. Those outcomes depend on the particular design, production results, product implementation and market availability. For buyers, use foundry news as context; use product-level evidence to make the purchase decision.
