For developers, the practical opportunities are game-side choices—such as reducing menu rendering work, applying deliberate frame-rate caps, and scaling back rendering after inactivity—then measuring the result on the target hardware. The right change depends on the game’s engine, rendering path, and measured bottleneck.
Start with settings that reduce work outside gameplay
Menus, lobbies, and leaderboards often need less rendering work than active gameplay. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Energy Efficiency Essentials recommends considering lower menu frame rates and reduced internal resolution in these contexts. These are developer-side options, not retail-console toggles or guaranteed performance fixes.
Choose a menu frame rate for the interaction
For a menu that does not need highly responsive animation, consider 30 Hz; use 60 Hz when the interface benefits from a more immediate feel. Microsoft says 120 FPS is generally unnecessary for menus. These are recommendations, not required Series S defaults, and the suitable choice depends on the title and engine.
Reduce internal resolution where the tradeoff is acceptable
Consider lowering internal rendering resolution in menus, lobbies, or leaderboards if profiling shows the work is worthwhile and the visual difference is acceptable. Microsoft notes that console upscaling can preserve a 2160p output where desired. That does not mean every title should lower its internal resolution or use that output approach.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use frame-rate caps to control uncapped workloads
For an uncapped game or scenario, profile a cap such as 60 or 120 FPS. A cap can limit unnecessary rendering when the workload could otherwise run faster than the experience requires, but it is not proof of improved frame-rate stability. Depending on the workload, a cap may reduce peak frame rate without improving frame pacing. Compare measurements before and after the change, and retain it only if it serves the experience.
Reduce rendering after inactivity
Microsoft also describes reducing rendering resolution or frame rate after a period without player input. A developer can make the reduction gradual or expose it as a player-facing behavior, provided it does not disrupt the experience. Choose the timeout and transition based on the game’s interaction model; Microsoft does not prescribe a universal interval.

Understand what 60 FPS and 120 FPS labels mean
Microsoft’s Game Publishing Guide ties these capability claims to a steady frame rate at 1080p or higher resolution. It states: “Your game should maintain a steady frame rate at 1080p or higher resolution to qualify as designed to run at 60+ FPS.” The corresponding criterion for “Designed to run at 120 FPS” is also a steady frame rate at 1080p or higher. These are publishing criteria, not evidence that a single setting will produce the target in every mode or scenario. See Microsoft’s technical capabilities guidance.

Do not infer a performance gain from the setting alone. Profile the affected scenario and check the result in the game’s relevant modes. Microsoft’s certification test requirements list retail Xbox Series S configurations, including a 1080p setup. Its retail-sandbox testing guidance recommends testing console products before release.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Retail hardware can be used for target-device testing, but owning a shop-bought Series S does not itself grant GDK or developer-program access. Microsoft’s title-quality guidance treats an unplayable frame rate as a serious issue and expects titles to function across modes and scenarios. A setting that helps a menu but causes a poor transition or fails in another mode is not a successful optimization.

What the available guidance does not establish
- There is no universal Series S resolution scale, CPU or GPU budget, or frame-pacing value that applies to every game.
- The guidance does not identify a retail-console switch that improves a particular game’s internal performance.
- It does not compare performance modes for any named game; a mode-by-mode comparison requires game-specific measurements.
- A recommended cap or lower menu resolution is an option to test, not a measured improvement or a promise of higher gameplay frame rates.
