Neither exact pins nor version ranges are inherently safer. Pins make a selected version repeatable; ranges express which versions a package considers compatible. For applications, keep a resolved lock or exhaustive environment file alongside version ranges so installs can be reproduced. For libraries published to PyPI, use dependency metadata to describe supported versions rather than forcing every user onto exact versions. In either case, repeatability is not a security guarantee: review updates and check advisories.
What is the difference between a pin and a range?
An exact pin names one version, such as library==2.4.1 in Python. A range permits a set of versions, using forms such as ^, ~, comparison operators, or wildcards in npm, and version specifiers in Python. npm documents these manifest forms in its package.json reference; Python’s packaging specification describes the range of dependency expressions and how their interpretation depends on the tool’s role (Dependency specifiers).
A range is a compatibility boundary, not a record of the exact environment installed. A lockfile or exhaustive requirements file records a resolved set for a particular application workflow. The distinction matters because a project can declare ranges and still install reproducibly when its resolved versions are recorded and used consistently.
Which approach is safer?
It depends on what “safer” means. If the priority is reproducing a known installation, record the full resolved dependency tree or environment. If the priority is allowing downstream users to choose compatible versions for their own environments, publish suitable ranges in library metadata. Neither approach establishes that chosen versions are free of vulnerabilities or remain appropriate indefinitely.

| Decision | Exact pins in dependency declarations | Ranges plus a lock or environment file |
|---|---|---|
| What is specified | A particular version for the dependency being pinned. | An allowed set in package metadata, plus a separate resolved set for a specific environment. |
| Repeatability | Direct pins alone may leave transitive dependencies unconstrained. | A committed npm lockfile or exhaustive Python requirements file can record direct and transitive resolutions. |
| Downstream compatibility | Exact pins in published Python metadata can restrict consumers’ ability to resolve upgrades or compatible versions. | Ranges communicate compatibility while leaving the consumer’s environment room to resolve versions. |
| Updates | Versions advance when the pins are deliberately changed. | A committed lock does not refresh on every install; it must be deliberately updated. npm may update it when manifest ranges and its existing resolutions no longer match. |
| Security meaning | A stable version is not necessarily a secure or current version. | A flexible range is not assurance that a newly resolved version is safe. |
The practical divide is distribution versus deployment: reusable library metadata communicates supported versions, while an application’s deployment inputs record the environment its release process expects.
For npm applications, keep package.json ranges and commit the lockfile
package.json declares acceptable dependency ranges. package-lock.json records the resolved dependency tree; npm says it is intended for source control and allows later installs to reproduce that tree (npm package-lock.json documentation).

Use the install command that matches your workflow. With npm install, npm uses lockfile versions when they satisfy the ranges in package.json. If they do not, npm resolves versions that satisfy the manifest and updates the lockfile. For workflows that require the manifest and lockfile to remain strictly synchronized, npm documents npm ci (npm install documentation).
- Declare acceptable versions. Set the intended dependency ranges in
package.json. - Resolve and record the tree. Run
npm installwhen creating or deliberately refreshing the installation, then review changes to bothpackage.jsonandpackage-lock.json. - Commit the lockfile. Keep
package-lock.jsonin source control with the manifest. - Install strictly in controlled workflows. Use
npm ciwhere the manifest and lockfile must stay synchronized.
Pinning only direct npm dependencies is not equivalent to freezing the whole tree. npm’s legacy v6 lockfile guide specifically explains that transitive dependencies could change on a fresh install even when a direct dependency specifier was exact; treat that as legacy-version guidance, not a statement of current CLI behavior (npm v6 package-locks documentation).

For Python, separate published metadata from an application environment
Publishing a reusable package to PyPI
Published dependency metadata is for package consumers with potentially different environments. The Python Packaging User Guide advises against using install_requires to pin exact versions or declare sub-dependencies, because that can be overly restrictive and prevent users from benefiting from upgrades (install_requires vs requirements files). Express the compatibility your library needs rather than imposing one exact environment on every consumer.
Reproducing an application environment
For an application that needs a repeatable complete environment, use an exhaustive requirements or locking workflow that captures transitive dependencies as well as direct ones. pip defines pinning as using == to require a particular version and describes using a pip freeze-generated requirements file to pin top-level and transitive packages (pip Repeatable Installs). Pinning only the packages named directly in a project does not by itself lock the full environment.

pip also notes that this repeatability strategy trusts package locations and the certificate-authority chain. A version list therefore addresses which package versions are selected; it does not independently establish the trustworthiness of the package source.

Version selection and security review are separate controls. An exact pin can keep an application on a vulnerable release until someone updates it. A range can allow a different version to be selected as resolution changes, but flexibility does not establish that the selected release is safe. These are operational consequences of how pins and ranges behave, not a measured finding that one approach produces fewer vulnerabilities.

- Review and test dependency updates rather than assuming either a pin or range is self-maintaining.
- Check relevant security advisories when assessing a selected or proposed version.
- When refreshing a lock or requirements file, review the resulting changes and verify they fit the project’s compatibility needs.
The official documentation cited here explains repeatability and compatibility behavior; it does not establish a comparative vulnerability rate for exact pins versus ranges.
