For Android games that already support a gamepad, connect a compatible controller and use the game’s built-in controls. For games controlled only by tapping the screen, Mantis Gamepad Pro is the best-documented option here: it maps physical gamepad inputs to on-screen controls. Panda Gamepad Pro is another option, but available product information is too limited for a fair feature-by-feature comparison. Neither app is established as a full replacement for Steam Deck or Steam Input.
Choose the right kind of controller support first
“Steam Deck-style” can mean two different things on Android: using a physical controller with a game that natively accepts gamepad input, or mapping controller buttons onto touchscreen controls in a game designed for touch. These are different approaches, and a mapping app is relevant mainly to the second.
- Native gamepad support: Connect a compatible controller and configure it in the game if needed. A screen mapper is not required.
- Touch-only controls: Use a screen-mapping app to assign physical buttons or sticks to locations or controls on the display.
- Windows PC control or streaming: Look for a PC companion solution if the target is a Windows game. That is not the same as mapping controls in an Android game.

Mantis Gamepad Pro: the clearest fit for touch-only Android games
Mantis describes an approach that places gamepad inputs over touchscreen controls, so a physical button or stick can trigger a touch target. The Play listing also describes per-game profiles and virtual mouse mode. These capabilities can make touch-driven games easier to play with a controller, but they do not establish compatibility with every game or reproduce the complete Steam Deck experience.
Mantis says it supports almost all gamepads supported by Android and names Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Razer, Logitech, GameSir, iPega and 8BitDo among compatible or tested brands. Treat that as the publisher’s guidance, not a guarantee for every controller model, phone, Android build or game. Check the exact combination before relying on it.

Activation depends on Android version and device state
Mantis’s listing says Android 10 and below require activation using a PC or a second Android device unless the phone is rooted. It describes on-device activation through Android wireless debugging. Follow the current instructions in the app for your device; setup requirements can vary with Android version and device state.
Store figures are not a quality test
When retrieved in 2026, the Google Play listing for Mantis Gamepad Pro Beta showed 5 million-plus installs and a 4.1 rating. Mantis Pro Gaming’s product page reported 10 million-plus downloads and 250,000-plus monthly users. The Play figures are store data and may change; the audience figures are publisher-reported. Neither is an independent comparison or a guarantee of compatibility.

What to check before choosing an app or controller
- Identify the target. Confirm whether you are playing an Android game on the phone, or controlling a Windows PC. A phone-to-PC companion app solves a different problem from Android screen mapping.
- Check the game’s controls. If it accepts a gamepad natively, try that path first. If it offers only touch controls, check that the mapper supports the inputs and screen layout you need.
- Confirm setup requirements. Read the app’s current activation instructions for your Android version and device. For Mantis, the listing describes different activation paths for Android 10 and below and newer versions.
- Verify the physical controller. Check the exact controller model, its connection method, and your phone’s compatibility. Brand names alone do not confirm that every model will work.
- Test the game’s control layout. If the app offers profiles, set up or adjust controls for the individual game and verify that buttons, sticks and touch targets behave as expected.
What “Steam Deck-style” does—and does not—mean here
These Android tools can address particular parts of handheld play: connecting a physical controller, mapping buttons to touch controls, or using a phone as a controller for a Windows PC. The available product information does not establish that Mantis or Panda recreates Steam Deck hardware, Steam Input’s full feature set, or a universal controller experience across Android games. The practical choice is therefore based on the game and the device setup you want, not on an assumption that an app turns an Android phone into a Steam Deck.
